Title: University of California, Berkeley says 3D can hurt you eyes!
Post by: gunug on July 23, 2011, 09:36:02 AM
I have only every seen a 3D video at one of those huge iMAX theatres and it only lasted for about 45 minutes but I remember some discomfort. Haven't seen a Hollywood 3D effort yet but we were discussing doing it this afternoon for Harry Potter! I think that this research would've been better before so much time and effort went into the 3D effort!
QUOTE
After experimenting on 24 adults, a research team at the University of California, Berkeley has determined that viewing content on a stereo 3D display hurts your eyes and your brain. The scientific term is “vergence-accomodation,” which means that the eye must constantly adjust to both the distance of the physical screen and that of the 3D content. This can supposedly cause visual discomfort, fatigue, and headaches, which I had thought were just a part of life but apparently there’s a scapegoat: 3D technology.

I'd guess that most "studies" are done only after a 'problem' is discovered. It's hard enough to predict the future (as opposed to the past) without having to include all the problems that will come with it.
I'd also suggest that there have been several million people who have watched 3D without any problem(s). 24 people hardly makes a definitive group, after all they all probably live in California, which makes them suspect from the beginning!
IMHO, your poll has too few options; the only things that bothers me about 3D are the price$.
Finally, from what I hear/read 3D has yet to be found useful in 90% of its applications. And that 10% is mostly limited to medical instruction...

Plus givin the local of the testees/testers, they quite possibly were already seeing 3D through funny smelling smoke without the glasses.

Now I'm really worried. I haven't attended a 3D movie since the 1950s but I see the real world in 3D all the time. I guess this means that I'll be blind by the time I get to my 150th birthday.

Twenty-four is a pretty small sampling, but who knows.
We rented one of the newer 3D movies and tried it here at home. I honestly couldn't find a comfortable way to hold my head to adjust between the weird glasses and my tri-focals. Never did see the big effect. Mac saw it, thought it was cool but not great. We wouldn't go out of our way to watch 3D anything at this point.
And just my humble opinion, but Harry Potter doesn't need it. It's a great movie all on it's own.

I'm not sure what the final Harry Potter movie needed but I suppose that they at least ended it effectively and left things in the future in a hopeful state!

It didn't need anything, and the ending is faithful to the book.

It's been so long since I saw a 3D movie...I really don't know. I do remember seeing the red, blue, and green halos around the images without the glasses on.
I guess it probably could sitting only 5-6 feet away.

Those different colored pixels are the basic method of tricking the mind into thinking the image has depth. At least that's the way it used to be, I frankly haven't seen a 3D image in decades... But those slightly misaligned pixels are also what causes the eyestrain. The eyes try to focus each eyes received image either to the left/right/above/below what the other one sees. And, just as we are usually left/right-handed, one eye usually is dominant. That means the other eye does most of the 'adapting' of its positioning. The brain actually does the correcting but the eye has to use the muscles which is what causes the problems. I found that keeping both eyes closed was the best way to avoid them...
Closing both eyes is also a great way to avoid being scared while driving on circuitous mountain roads or even dense, high-speed traffic.
