Is anyone running Lion from the download?
I'm just curious if anyone is enjoying it of if it really is not worth it at this time....my mouse and I are in love.
Seriously, is anyone running it yet?
TIA
-
Yes, I am!
I like it! Right after the download, my MacBook Pro was a little slow. I assume it was writing a lot of new log information and prefs for awhile. In short time, it got up to speed and it feels as fast/responsive as it ever was.
Lion will be more pleasurable using either the track pad already on the laptops or on the Magic Pad if you're using a desktop or iMac. But that's just my opinion.
-
Lion is impressive ... but, I have 16 GB of RAm on my QuadCore iMac
It is swell.
Incidfentally, > one million peeps installed LION on day one !

Unless you're a developer or you buy a new machine, that's the only way anyone is running it!
I have a new iMac coming possibly by next Friday. I fear that it will have Lion installed, I'm hoping that it will still have Snow Leopard so I can make the update at my own convenience. I haven't even installed 10.6.8, yet!
-
No major problems here, well, other than my learning curve, e.g., I'm finding Lion a bit steep. Smilar, sorta, to the migration from Classic to OS X. Doing your homework prior to installing Lion cannot be over emphasized (IMNHO).
FWIW, If one has favorite PPC applications, such as Quicken (and others), I strongly recommend keeping a 10.6.x backup (or two). Should you later wish to transfer/import your Quicken data, the export cannot be consummated if the Quicken app cannot be opened (because of no Rosetta).
Lion, best when taken with a soft Burgundy.

I'm making a USB stick installer at the moment, and then will bite the bullet and install it on my Macbook Pro. If all goes well with that, then will probably install it on the Mac Pro once I return home from the cottage at the end of the summer. Son #2's iMac will also probably get updated, as that's going to the cottage tomorrow too.
BTW - in case anyone missed it, Apple WILL be making Lion available on USB sticks at the Apple Store later this year for $69. $30 is a lot to pay for an 8GB stick - if you have one lying around, I say download from the App Store (once) and DIY, either for multiple computers or if you want the ability to do a clean install, or just want a backup installer. It's easy to do, though it takes a fair chunk of time for Disk Utility to copy/restore the .dmg file to the USB stick - 35 minutes or so in my case.
NOTE: if you want to make a USB stick installer (or DVD install disk) you MUST do it BEFORE you install on your HD, because Lion deletes the installer once it's done. You'll find the Lion Installer in your Applications folder after you download from the App store.

I wonder if it would help to move the .dmg before doing any installs? Certainly worth copying it to an external/secondary drive before doing anything else. Hopefully, the location is 'hard-wired/coded and it won't be found if the disk image is moved (assuming it will also install from the moved position!). I seriously wonder about Apple's new installation methods, seems designed way below the "least common denominator," if you know what I mean...
Or downright half-baked; hiding the Users Library but leaving the root one visible? OK, it does require a password to make changes in the latter, but seriously...I thought that other one was MINE!!!
-
Jim, the installer that you'll find in your Applications folder (should you ever get around to installing Lion,
) is not a .dmg file. To find that and save it, follow these instructions:
- After downloading, there will be an item in your Applications folder called "Install Mac OS X Lion"
- Right-click that item and choose "Show Package Contents"
- Go to the SharedSupport folder
- the item InstallESD.dmg is the Lion installer - copy it to a USB drive or DVD and use it to install on other machines
Or follow these instructions and then follow the ones I linked to above to create your own installer DVD or USB stick. Done. It really isn't hard. And if it saves me $30 to do it myself, fine and dandy.
As for the User Library being invisible, it's a bit silly, if you ask me, but exceedingly easy to fix once and for all. Simply open Terminal and type in (without quotes, of course) "chflags nohidden ~/Library" - enter admin pw if prompted. Done - it's now permanently visible. There are other temporary visibility options, but why bother with those? I find it funny that Adobe, who have posted a tech note on this, advise only "advanced" users to use the Terminal method. Actually, I find it funny that ADOBE have even posted a tech note on this - Apple haven't as far as I know! :roll eyes:
Given the number of articles on this issue, it will be interesting to see if Apple react in any way by either making it a preference option or just putting it back to the way it was before (visible) in future releases.

Forgot to mention, I am now running Lion on this MBP and so far so good. Haven't done a full explore though. Did change the scrolling direction - although that wasn't a deal breaker - I could have gotten used to it quite easily I think. The auto correct/complete as I'm typing is nice. So far it's only jumped to the wrong conclusion a few times. It's nice for those times when you type "fo" instead of "of" or "hte" instead of "the."
It remains to be seen whether I'll find LaunchPad useful or not. I suspect Mission Control may be useful when I get up to my usual tricks of having 25 apps open at once!!
The new Mail is ok, once I changed it back to Classic view.
I found having snippets of each email visible not terribly useful. I DO like the conversation feature! So often I've found myself scrolling through looking for other bits of an email conversation - particularly for those who don't seem to realize that including the original email in a response is actually quite useful.
Safari is nice - my only complaint is that they seem to have made the greys on the toolbar too similar to one another - so it's more difficult to tell what buttons are "greyed out" and which are actually useable. I can't really judge whether it's substantially faster or not as the connection here at the cottage is considerably slower than the one at home (6Mbps vs 32) although it seems pretty snappy.
And that's as far as I've gotten yet. I decided that since the software for my EyeOne will be updated to work with Lion in August, and it seemed to be the only thing I'd actually miss having the use of, that I'd get on with the exploration of the new OS. I only just got the EyeOne last month, so I can live without it for a few weeks - and I hadn't tried it yet on the MBP anyway.
-
If you are using EyeOne Match2, as am I, the Lion-compatible version is scheduled for release in September, not August (at least according to xrite).

Yes - right you are, Jon. I must be confusing it with something else, because I did read that page you linked to! Anyway - not a biggie, as I don't anticipate any critical photo printing between now and then. My monitor at home is calibrated and I haven't updated to Lion there yet, and won't be home for any extended period until the beginning of September. In the mean time, I'll get comfortable with the newest big cat on my MBP, and find out if there are any show-stoppers.

I thought that's what I said, "...move the disk image file somewhere..." You're just 'showing off' because you actually know what you're talking about!
I'm assuming I'll still have to do some downloading, however, if the new iMac coming already has Lion installed. I doubt that anyone at Apple would be so kind as to save that one disk image (you know, the one I was talking about!).
This whole 'download-install-and-wipe-out-the-installer' scheme seems a little on the diabolical side, anyway. I suppose Apple is concerned about check sums and all or they want to protect their intellectual property, but if installing simply means making a copy of that disk image, I don't understand what they are 'securing.'
And it certainly won't make anyone happy when they decide they need to take it back to an Apple Store and wait another few hours... Even if they have a fast connection, it will be several magnitudes slower than a DVD. I agree, it sounds 'stupid simple' but it also sounds simply stupid, IMHO.

iMac Intel i3 21.5” OS 10.6.8, (10.7 ?)
Downloaded OS 10.7 and installed it on a separate External Disc.
Of course I did not make a copy of the .dmg file so that i can't make a reinstall unless I pay again another 30 bucks.
I don't know if I'm going to make use of it anyway if it performs the way it does now.
- I can't move the Dock to the RH side of the screen, only to the bottom or to the LH side.
- It may be finger (or brain) problem, but I can't make a "Save as" of a simple TextEdit file.
- I can't disable the F1 to F4 keys so that I can reprogram them to do something else.
- And of course most of my apps don't work since most of them are PPC apps.
And besides my OS 10.6.8 runs like "a son of a gun" and rarely crashes. So i think it's going
to be a "Hello 10.7, Goodbye 10.7" and return to my faithful 10.6.8.
Positive and negative comments are welcome.

As I understand it, you can re-download Lion as often as you want, just like any other purchase at the App Store. I would certainly give that a shot since you've lost the actual installer part that you'd need to do any re-installing. Anything you purchase at the App Store should display a "Installed" label since it recognizes your computer with the Apple ID and password, not by actually looking at your HD as Software Update does.
- Can't help with the Dock positioning as I don't have Lion, yet.
- I believe the command you need to use is now called "Duplicate." You can then rename the file whatever you want. Lion has auto-saving built in, so the SaveAs... function is now handled by creating duplicates.
- Are you saying there is no more Keyboard Pref Panel?
- The lack of PPC support has been long reported (and rumored even longer!). And even most of my Intel apps have been offering free updates to make the gesture inputs usable with Lion. I gave up on Quicken before the first of the year. So far, that's the only major app I've had to replace. The other one that would have delayed my move to Lion is now running as Beta with Intel code (URLM Pro).
Sometimes we have to leave older apps behind when they can't keep pace with the hardware. I think the last PPC Mac was built in 2006? Of course, if Leopard/SNow Leopard is running and serving you well...
-
I benefitted (in my amateur status) today by another of Harv's sterling suggestions . . . I have scored a number of those in the past 11+ years, thank goodness!
To get an idea what your applications may look like in 10.7, enter System Profiler––>Sotware––>Applications and sort by Kind. That will tell you what PowerPC Apps may have to be upgraded if you want to continue to use them, e.g. I don't want to lose my AppZapper or FileMaker!
Thanks, Harv.
-
Of course, FM has been Intel capable for some years...and AppZapper has many competitors, none of these types apps ever having been determined to be completely safe, much less 100% effective.

Perhaps a more active and thorough reading (and the dreaded Search function!!!) of TS might also be helpful? <Posted May 8, 2011>:)

1. You can re-download the Lion installer any time you please once you've paid. I know this because I tried it. You won't get charged again. I made a USB stick because I didn't want to go through 4 GB of bandwidth every time I updated another household Mac. While we have plenty of bandwidth at home (150GB a month, since Rogers just upped it last week on our tier) we have a somewhat more limited plan at the cottage and that's where we are now with 2 Macs.
2. Dock preferences haven't changed since SL. You can still move the Dock to the right or the left or the bottom - see the Dock prefs in the System prefs. (tried it too, just to check - just give it a few seconds to actually move)
3. What Jim said - just click Duplicate if you need a different copy than the original. Rename, done.
4. In the System Prefs->Keyboard, tick the "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" box and then reprogram away. Using any of these keys and the "fn" key will give you their standard Mac functions after you do that. Other options - See: http://www.joshsunshine.me.uk/2011/07/rema...y-to-launchpad/
5. Bite the bullet and update applications? Sorry - the fact that PPC apps won't work in Lion has been well publicized for a very long time and there isn't anything you can do other than update (or stick with the older OS).
-
Thanks Paddy.
1- How do you go about re-downloading Lion. I go to the app Store, click on Lion, but nothing happens.
Please give me a set of step by step instructions to do the re-downloading Lion.
2- The Dock does not want to go to the right. I waited 5 minutes. When I click to go to the centre from the right selection,
the Dock flashes on the right and reappears in the centre. That's why I want to reinstall 10.7.
3- OK. I wonder why they changed this particular menu.
4- All F Keys are now programmable. I should have remembered this one. There are more and more neurones getting
disconnected.
5- I guess I will have to bite the bullet if I want to keep up with the big boys. I made my first move toward that by buying
EazyDraw to translate some of my Appleworks drawings. I installed copies in both my 10.6.8 and 10.7 systems. I guess
I'll slowly move to 10.7. I hope there will be enough neurones that stay connected to make it all the way!!!
Thanks again.

Not sure what is happening with your Dock prefs - perhaps they're corrupted. Try deleting the associated .plist file - User->Library->Preferences->com.Apple.dock.plist. You will need to make your user Library visible to do this. As I posted above, go to the Terminal and type "chflags nohidden ~/Library" without the quotes. Do be careful to include the spaces.
Just discovered something rather cool about Lion. If you click on a .plist in list view, in the right hand column, you'll get the actual .plist data (without having to choose to open it in a text app). I can see, for instance, that I have the Dock at the bottom. You could of course try editing that in a text app, if all else fails - just change "bottom" to "right". Will the Dock move to the left if you select that in the prefs? If not, I'd say there is definitely something wrong with the .plist.
As for re-downloading Lion, you can't do it by just hitting the button (which no doubt says "Installed") - you need to hold down the Option button and click on "Purchased" at the top of the window in the App store. Then it will come up and you can click on the Install button again, which will re-download it. Note: You do NOT need to do this if you're downloading it to another Mac you own that doesn't yet have Lion installed - you only need to do this if you want to make a USB or DVD install disk and forgot to do it BEFORE you installed Lion.
-
I think Apple is making use of Quicklook (which I think that's what you're seeing) in more parts of the OS. I think I read about the automatic display in Finder but I thoght it was in Column View (I tend to forget there even are other Views!!!
).
Have you tried moving a file/folder/etc. with command-c/command-v? Same commands as used for copy and pasting items in a document can now be used in Finder for moving a file (with or without making a duplicate). Could be useful in keeping the number of Finder windows down, I guess, otherwise, I don't see any big deal about it. Most people simply can't understand what can be done and assume "Cut/Copy & Paste" is only for content, not files (as has been done in Windows for quite some time).
I can see Windows users (new to Mac) using it, but it's hardly anything a long time Mac user would even find, much less use.
As with any new version of software, there are usually lots of changes/tweaks/additions and, it seems, very few people ever take the time to search them out or try them. They may be too much like me; set in their 'old ways!'

iMac Intel i3 21.5” OS 10.6.8, (10.7 ?)
Thanks again Paddy.
1- Made User->Library visible through Terminal as you suggested. I deleted com.apple.dock.plist and restarted.
No change, cannot move the dock to the right. I can move it to the lett and to the bottom, but not to the right.
2- I do not see the actual data in the RH side column of a .plist in List view. I did open the dock.plist with BBEdit,
and edited the text from "left" to "bottom" to "right". Upon restarting, the dock appears to the left or to the centre
but not to the right.
3- I have been trying for the last 24 hours at different times to re-download 10.7 without success.
I followed your directions and after selecting the purchased selection of 10.7 and clicking again on the "Installed" button,
nothing happens, even after an hour.
4- So after reading in an OS 10.7 Support article about a System reinstall, I restarted holding
Command+R and sure enough a reinstallation of 10.7 began. But after the reinstallation I still
cannot move the Dock to the right side.
5- I wonder if I'll ever be able to re-download 10.7. May be in a month's time when the App Store gets less busy with 10.7.

PS. There is no problem with installing applicable apps. Microsoft Office 2011 installed in a relative jiffy. Others as well.
Still, that Dock is bugging me!

You will need to make your user Library visible to do this. As I posted above, go to the Terminal and type "chflags nohidden ~/Library" without the quotes. Do be careful to include the spaces.
TinkerTool System now allows this via a GUI, assuming that you don't mind paying the fee.

As for (3) the reinstall - you can't redownload it by pressing the "Installed" button. That's why I posted the directions on how to do it. Try this (slight modification - hold option key WHILE opening App store): Close Appstore. Hold down option while clicking open appstore. Keep it held and click purchases. And then keep holding option and click Lion. BTW - you have checked your Applications folder to make sure it isn't there already? It will be called "Install Mac OS Lion" if memory serves.
I don't know what is the matter with your Dock - mine goes wherever I want it to, so I've not had to do any troubleshooting there. You could try reinstalling the Dock using Pacifist to open the installer package contents and finding just that app. (after you re-download Lion, that is.
)
You also might want to try cleaning cache files - I'd use Onyx for that.
-
I think it is extremely important that everyone be on the same "page." When discussing what is done, please state exactly which OS you are operating under. This is especially important when you have two OSs installed. Steps suggested may be when operating in one OS but not applicable in the other. Likewise, results seen in one OS may not be the same when operating in the other. I'm not the brightest "son" in my family, but I am finding it next to impossible to keep track of who is running in which OS and in which OS the suggestions are to be used. If anything, it's now worse than with Leopard/Snow Leopard. Of course, having an "App" section in iTunes 'Store' plus having an "Mac App Store" doesn't help...

For this thread to be of help to others, these details need to be clear and explicit. Thanks.
-
Thanks all. I give up!! (For now anyway) No matter what I try, including STRICTLY following
Paddy's instructions, I just can't re-download 10.7. No matter what I do the same screen with the "Installed" button keeps showing up. And yes I see the screen with all my purchases, but clicking on my 10.7 purchase keeps bringing me back to the "Installed" button page. And no
Paddy, the "Install Mac OS Lion" folder is not in the Applications folder. And cleaning the caches
with Onyx did not help to allow the Dock to be put on the RH side.

jb, when you hold down the option key (hold it down before you click on the App store application) and click on the Purchased button, you should get a list that includes Lion and there should be a button beside it that says "Install". For me, clicking on that starts the download - I just checked. And yes, I do have Lion installed on this Mac. Do you not get the "Install" button - not "installed" which you see if you simply log into the App store?
As for the Dock issue, I'd try posting that question on the Apple forums. Nobody else has posted about that issue there or anywhere else that I can find, so it's definitely an odd one.
BTW - try repairing permissions. You never know...And also run Disk Utility "verify disk" to see if there are any directory errors.
