Title: Old Zip 100 and newer iMac G4
Post by: Sooz on July 27, 2011, 05:13:03 PM
I have a bunch of photos and documents saved on a number of iomega zip 100 disks, and I have the old zip drive that used to be connected to the back of my old Mac by those "pins" thingys with the two tightening screw things on each side.

I obviously cannot use the zip drive because I can't connect it to my iMac computer.

How can I access my photos and documents from my old zip disks?

Thanks!

Smiles,
Sooz

How about an Iomega Zip 100 Portable USB Drive (PC/Mac)? I have no experience with this but it showed up in a Google search.

Jchuzi, thanks for the suggestion and the link.

Jack, how does yours get connected to the back of your computer???  Does it use one of those ports that also are designed for a thumb drive?

Thanks!
Sooz

It's USB, Sooz. And yes, thumb drives use USB. As do mice, keyboards, external drives etc. etc.

Zip drives are utterly useless at this point in time (disks are small and notoriously unreliable) - all you want to do is remove the data from the Zip disks you have, Sooz. For this, I'd recommend you get a guaranteed working drive off eBay. There is NO reason to buy a new one - I would never recommend that you continue using it after you get your data off the disks.

http://cgi.ebay.com/iomega-ZIP-100-Externa...7#ht_500wt_1090 (for instance)

Then sell it again on eBay when you're done. wink.gif

Thanks, Paddy, and thanks for the link (I made a bid) and yes, I do plan on removing the data from my Zip disks and then I'll be done with it.

Do you have any recommendations as to how to get rid of the old zip disks so data can't be recovered??

I knew those USB went into the SCSI port, but I sure didn't know they retained the same name while being made much, much smaller. Thank goodness for you and the good folks here at Tech Survivors!

Coincidentally, yesterday I was looking at a rack of old Zip discs, 100 and 250MB, and wondering what to do with them and the drive.... For just the return air fare I'd be willing to deliver it personally laughhard.gif

Using a hammer can be quite therapeutic, but do wear safety glasses! biggrin.gif

Going back to your first post, it sounds like your Zip drive has a serial connector, in which case, a serial-to-USB adapter would do the job, assuming the drive still works otherwise. Would probably be cheaper and you should be able to get it at any computer shop.

The hammer sounds like fun! A microwave (or even a conventional oven) should also work. Even the dishwasher! yes.gif But I'd say they're all  probably overkill ( eek2.gif ) since:I think I sometimes think my data (especially very old data) is more important to others than it really is... Thinking.gif Most of it is already available for a price or from a young hacker. Of course, even paranoid people have enemies! Paranoid.gif wacko.gif

OTOH, there seem to be many people who think they can delete things they put on the interwebs... rolleyes.gif

Hi, sew...email comin' at ya...and thanks!!! YES! thanx.gif

Highmac, what a nice offer!  Return airfare, huh?  You'd have to stay and let me feed you lasagna, and of course, you'd want to see all the sights, and then you could go to the metro salon for men and women and we could get mani-pedis, and then since Vegas is a few hours away we'd have to go there, and then...and then... and then... well, you may never want to go back "home" except for visits.  I'd hate to disrupt your life like that, so have to kindly not take you up on your offer for me to pay for return airfare.  (sigh) It's probably for the best this way.  wink.gif  Thanks for the hammer/safety glasses idea!

Thanks, XABD, for your 1-2-3 input as well. clap.gif

Smiles,
Sooz

smile.gif I'm almost ready to pay my own fare - but not sure what Mrs Highmac might say laugh.gif

On second thoughts, I am pretty sure what she'd say.... "only if I can come along" laughhard.gif

[Neil, don't forget you've both got a room (with en suite bath!) if you want to visit "Elvis" land. Just don't expect me to go there with you. We've only lived in the area for ~35 years and I don't want to visit all the 'sights' too soon! laughhard.gif

BTW, don't expect an English breakfast (Sausages, bacon, eggs (scrambled/buttered/rumbled/poached egg/fried), black pudding, eggy bread, crumpets, kippers, bubble and squeak, jolly boys (pancakes), onions (fried or rings) corned beef hash, devilled kidneys, kedgeree, omelette, fried bread, toast, Derbyshire oatcakes, English muffins, tomatoes (grilled, fried), mushrooms, hash browns, baked beans, potato scones/tattie scones, Arbroath smokies, bannocks, butteries/rowies (lard-based bread roll), herring, haggis, Lorne (square Scottish) sausage, white pudding, laver bread, Penclawdd cockles, Glamorgan (vegetarian) sausage, Crempog (Welsh pancakes), wheaten bread, potato farl and potato pancakes.), either! laughhard.gif

Mrs. Highmac is welcome to come along, of course!

Be warned though, that when we share a meal in my Italian household, having seconds is polite, but having thirds means you really like the food!  (And I don't mean polite tiny portions, either!)

Sooz
