I'm having an Apple Apps store Lion install problem.

When trying to down load it the download quit due to a problem that didn't write down, darn'et.
Now, when I go to the Apple Apps store it says Lion is installed, but it's not.

Does anyone know what the best way to deal with this problem?

I'm updated on the 10.6.8. 16 megs of ram and so forth.

I had a similar problem after purchasing Lion from the App Store. I gather you have a receipt from the App Store.
What I finally did after talking to a couple of techs at Applecare and getting nowhere,
I took my iMac i3 21.5" along with my App Store receipt to an Apple Store where
they did a reinstall of 10.7. I had also brought an 8GB USB Drive and ask them to
put the Lion Installer on it which they graciously did.

For your edification, prior to attempting to install Lion, I had partitioned my Internal disk:
Part 1, my then current 10.6.8, and Part 2, intended for 10.7 Lion. The purpose was to
always be able to fall back on my rock solid 10.6.8 while learning how to use 10.7. As I wrote
in another post, I don't know if I'll ever switch completely to 10.7 as I have many PPC legacy
programs which cannot be used with 10.7 as there is no Rosetta transition software in 10.7
as there was in 10.6.

When you download "Lion" from the App Store, you are actually downloading the Installer, not an actual OS. There should be a disk image on your HD labeled something like "Lion Installer" or similar. Double-click that and it becomes an application that will then install Lion.

Assuming you don't find that DMG, try checking the "Updates" and/or "Purchases" in the App Store. You may also be able to get another download of the installer by option-clicking the OS X Lion icon in the Purchased area. You can also try option-clicking the "Installed" button.

When you finally get a re-download, STOP! Do not install yet! Make a backup copy of the disk image and/or move it out of the download folder. Put it on a CD/DVD/Thumbdrive/another computer/etc. That is what you really need to install Lion! That re-downloading method is for the birds, IMHO.

I have no App Store receipt nor do I have any disk images of it. I just went to the Apple store and checked my purchases and it's not there.

So I guess it didn't register.?????

I just found the Mac OS Lion.app in my Applications folder? What does that mean.

That's the installer, Gary. That's why you can't download it again - it sees the installer sitting there. Is it complete? If it is, then you should be able to install from it, but as Jim says, make a copy first! If not, then you'll have to install it again. It should be about 4 GB in size. It won't have installed all by itself or done anything at this point.

If it's complete, you should be good to go - if not, deleting (or maybe just moving?) the installer should allow you to download Lion again from the App store.

I suspect that it isn't complete and that's why you don't see it in your list of purchases at the App store.

The installer is 3.77GB in size. I don't know if it's complete but it may be.

I don't have any disk image of it, all I have is what's called "Install Mac OS Lion.app" sitting in my Application folder.

Should I just copy that .app to a CD or thumbdrive as you and Jim have suggested? And if I transfer it to a thumbdrive, do I have to reformat the TD?

Gary, the downloaded file should be 3.7GB from what I've seen online, so it *may* be complete.

Do format the thumb drive to Mac OS extended. Follow the instructions for creating the thumb drive installer here:

If you do that and end up with 6 files that look like this screen shot on your thumb drive, then I'd say you've probably got the complete download and are good to go. Don't try to install it from the file on your HD until you've made your own thumb drive installer - it cannot be done after Lion is installed as the installer deletes files from the HD after install. (It won't do this to an external installer like a thumb drive). You will need an 8GB thumb drive.

Paddy et all, I followed the instructions on the page http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2389178,00.asp and when I "Double-click to mount the image, “Mac OS X Install ESD,” on your desktop", I got the message that it couldn't be opened because the checksum wasn't right.

What do you think?

When I option click the installed button at the App store it won't let me dl it.

Think I should delete the one I have and then try to dl a new one

Rats! But I think Paddy's solution of moving, even deleting the stuff you have will "convince" the App Store to let you try again. And I think you have determined that you weren't charged for that first attempt, correct? Since what you have is not workable, for whatever reason, I don't see much use in keeping it around.

I suppose the good news is that the installer is 'smart' enough to know the rest of the file is damaged. Better to know that now than have the machine locked upbecause of bad code. But it might help if the Store waited for conformation that a download was successful before recording that it was complete. I'm not sure why anyone should be limited in downloading if they are verified as previous, paid up owners! Frustrating, in my opinion and not very 'customer' friendly, much less user friendly.

I hope it works correctly for you this time, please let us know how it goes.

Trashing, in this case, seems logical since the current file(s) is(are) bad. I suppose the same problem could happen with a DVD but it's usually easier to see something like a scratch and the drive usually spits out the bad disk. Plus, one need not perform a search for what is really needed!

I re downloaded Lion after trashing the original.

3.77gb in size again. This time I followed the directions for putting it on a thumb-drive that Paddy gave earlier.

I still get the checksum error when tryin to open the disk-image on the last step of the instructions?

Are you grinding your teeth during the download? Perhaps you should leave the room during the download? Do you have a cat in the house.

My final suggestion is to try a different, minimalist account and/or start up in Safe Mode. That should remove any non-Apple files during the download.

No cat. I'm allergic to them, but we had them fro many years.

I bought another 8 gig stick, erased and formatted it, and I still can't get the file Mac OS X Install ESD,” on my desktop. I get an error that says, The following disk images couldn't be opened:

Image:InsallESD.dmg Reason: image ata corrupted.

I bought and paid for it.

Should I call Apple or what?

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I'm assuming you meant "image DATA corrupted..."??

Have you had this problem with any other .dmg file you've downloaded or only this one?

Gary,

I strongly suggest you bring your computer to the Apple Store in Madison.

I know, I know, it's a 2 to 2 1/2 hour 112 miles drive. Don't forget to bring your erased and MacOS extended reformatted USB stick so that the Apple Store can give you a copy of the Lion Installer. Bring also your App Store receipt.

I think there are actually four different OS disk formats. While I don't think it is a factor, some people have problems using the two "Case-sensitive" formats. I think the default is simply the "Journaled" format. It just so happens I made the following image as a help for someone in another forum, it explains what I'm talking about better than my 'thousand words!'
