Title: MPEG Quicktime to MP3 Audio Converter
Post by: Jack W on September 06, 2011, 01:27:24 PM
I have a bunch of MPEG audio files on an old CD (circa 2001).

Many of the files are MPEG movie files (audio only). Some are MP3 - no problem with these.

The MPEGs play fine on my iMac using Quicktime.

I want to convert these to MP3 format so I can play them on my Sony car stereo.

Any such free program available?

To push the envelope, I would like to convert the contents of folders.

I'm sure you can find a free audio editing app, I haven't searched for one in a while. But even for the paid one I now use, it needs a LAME framework/plug-in to convert anything to an MP3. Whatever app you use should explain how and where to get that and even if it's needed.

However, I thought QuickTime now save an audio file as MP3 natively now. dntknw.gif

And then there is iTunes... You might be able to create an empty disk image and 'burn' an MP3 CD to it? dntknw.gif

Apparently MPEG Streamclip for Mac should do the job:

http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html

There are two versions there - an earlier one and a more recent beta one. Not sure which to suggest, but they're both free. wink.gif

Tried both MPEG Streamclip 1.9.2 and 1.9.3b3.

Neither showed MP3 as a valid export.

Zilch

This might work for you Jack

Any Video Converter

I know it says Video converter, but also has an Audio tab. It does support MP3.

Just spotted this thread - been busy this week.

My method for creating MP3s using MPEG Streamclip and iTunes..... Fiddly but free smile.gif

Open the file in MPEG Streamclip (the beta is aimed at Snow Leopard, the other for earlier big cats).

Go to File/Export Audio. As mentioned, there is no option for MP3; I export to AIFF which I'm given to understand is lossless so at least the quality should stay the same.
If you want to do any editing of the AIFF you can use your favourite audio program
Otherwise, drag the AIFF file on to iTunes icon and it will load it it in, still as an AIFF (which will be a relatively big file, but suitable for burning to standard audio CD);
In iTunes Preferences - go to Import Settings button/Import Using - choose MP3 from the Dropdown and choose from three standard settings. Or use Custom which opens up more options. Then close the Prefs window.

Now go back to the main iTunes window and highlight the file or files you want to convert; go to Advanced and you now have the option to Create MP3 Version. A greyed out version of  the file will appear and stay greyed out until conversion is complete. You can highlight several files, but it will only convert one at a time. Be patient - it may take a while, depending on your setup, but you'll get a chime when it's finished.

Voila! - MP3!

Paddy,

Switch brought up switch_setup.exe - I suppose for windows.

Roy,

Any video converter won't work with the mpeg files - can't drag them in.

Highmac,

I will play around with your idea when I have more time.

Thanks to all who responded, and your suggestions.

This really can't be that hard.

When I have more time!!!

Thanks,

Jack

Paddy,

Found the Intel Mac version of Switch. (V4.1.5) (at the NCH site)

It works like a charm!

You can load multiple files into it, specify output format and folder to store converted files, etc.
Converts one file at a time, but is pretty darn fast!

Thanks!!!

Um...yes, if you download from the page I linked to, I believe that's the Windows version.

Here's the Mac version: http://www.nch.com.au/switch/mp3.html

Glad you got sorted, Jack.

For the benefit of anybody who finds this through a search, I forgot to mention that Streamclip can extract audio from EyeTV files.

In Streamclip, Open Files, navigate to the EyeTV archive folder; at the bottom of the window, change the dropdown from Video Files to All Files (not Audio). This will open the package and you  can then open the MPG in Streamclip and Export Audio. smile.gif

I can never remember the way to get iTunes to create/export a particular format by changing it's import settings! rolleyes.gif
