iChat has gone kaflooy on me....
I know that the camera works OK as I also have Facetime (just because it came free, Jim) and I can see my smiling visage through the camera on the screen.
I have dumped the iChat plist and 'lock' what ever as suggested in a Mac user community thread I stumbled on.
iChat will 'start up' and run, but as soon as I try to call someone or someone tries to call me (Thank You, George) it craps out.
I have sent numerous logs to Apple, but we all know how long that will take and what good it will do...
Am not a great systematic checker of things. Try this, try that, is more my style...
If anyone has a good list of other things to try I would welcome them... EVEN THE OBVIOUS, Paddy....
Did notice one 'strange' thing... When I open/start iChat my wife's name appears where mine normally would be at the top of the Buddy list???
But the accounts in the pref screen all 'appear' to be correct....

SSL was checked but unchecking that does not seem to help in this case.

Uhmn...I don't think your own name should be in the Buddies List, even if you do like yourself a lot! Aren't those supposed to be other people? Your own name would be up at the top of the window, actually above the Buddies list, and I assume it has a green button beside it?

Paddy.... no luck there.... with trying the various 'fixes' in the 2 threads... and looking at the crash logs does nothing for me... I can see that iChat is crashing but am unable to figure out why... not good at reading crash logs.

If all else fails, you might want to just reinstall Lion from the Recovery partition. At some point, the time you spend chasing a problem starts to exceed the time required to run the recovery option.

Just got back from the Mall of America Apple Store, and a successful session with "Spike", the Genius.
Had him going for a while with the crashing iChat problem.... tried a number of things to correct; new user, delete iChat Plists, read 'crash logs', etc., etc... to no avail.
Then he looked for any pluggins and WHOOPEE!! 2 Ecamm pluggins, one of which "ConferenceRecorder" was marked as incompatible with OSx 10.7.x.
So, he uninstalled it per the developer's instructions, and tried iChat again, no joy!! so, he then removed them to the desktop, and restarted the computer....... And we were good to go...
SO, if you are having iChat problems, check to see if you have any pluggins that may be causing you problems....
