2 reasons for asking this question:- I have Elements but DO NOT wish to use it to . . .
- Make a jpeg file from one that came in over my transom that I wish to fit into a folder for possible later use in an e-mail or a Pages layout, WITHOUT further processing and WITHOUT having first to send it to myself as an e-mail with the choices of "small/medium/large" already made.
Here's the original of my treasured grandson who hit 2 homers as the pitcher in an early game of this season. Oh yes, he also hit a homer to win the season opener!
Trust me. I would upload it here, except it significantly exceeds the max size permitted by TeeEss' web site rules. So, here's a SnapNDrag copy of the portion of the original attachment which "fits" on a 27" iMac display 1920x1200.

I know there are people here who understand PhotoShop AND Elements like the backs of their proverbial hands. I ain't never been wonna them (now in any way aspire to be). And, please don't tell me about how simple Elements is. (I am afflicted w/NPH and am principal caregiver to a PD patient . . . I've got enough to worry about besides anything made by Adobe!)
Oh yes, here's the young star from a MAIL-processed jpeg . . . EXCEPT it's 42.1 MB
That's it, Paddy. Thanks.
I was very hopeful that the simple dimensional/size changes available in the e-mail function would be found in a Menu item. I just wasn't smart enough to find it.
I'm still a little puzzled by your one comment . . .

you should have no difficulty seeing the entire photo in iPhoto, no matter what the resolution.

I probably should have said "seeing" in iPhoto w/o the necessity of scrolling vertically and horizontally.
Communication clarity is more difficult for me these days, sorry.
And thanks again to everybody participating in this thread.
Problem Solved!

And I think that is the problem she is trying to point out. Scrolling should not be required, no matter the dimensions of the image. I'll see if I can find any setting in iPhoto that may need adjusting... you're welcome to inspect your own, of course...
...later...
Sorry, I can't seem to make scroll bars appear in iPhoto. First, I selected a 1440 x 900 pixel image. Second, I made the iPhoto window as small as I could by dragging the sides inward. Here's what that looks like.[attachment=2582:Smallest...o_Window.gif]
Note: This is a gif with only 4 colors, just to keep the file size to a minimum.
Next, I used the "Zoom" slider to make the image as big as possible. Note that it doesn't have any effect on the iPhoto window. Nor does it cause any scroll bars.[attachment=2583:Maximum_Zoom.jpg]
Apple seems to know there are no scroll bars by providing a means of seeing portions of the image that may not be visible. See the little floating window? One simply moves the brighter colored part around to see other parts of the image. I got my "navigation" window to appear by clicking on the Edit icon/button. But, once it appears, it stays around even if one clicks back to a 'normal' window.[attachment=2584:Navigation_Window.jpg]
Perhaps you can capture an image showing your scroll bars?
BTW, these screen shots are of my 9.2.3 (629.52) version of iPhoto.
Well, should you encounter this strange phenomenon again, see Jim's second screen shot with the zoom slider highlighted in purple. This, of course, assumes that you're using iPhoto '11. There is no zoom button in the main window for iPhoto '09.

Iphoto 11: After selecting the photo you want, then "Share", then "e-mail", when the e-mail screen appears in the lower right hand portion of the screen there are the following options. I did test it and it sure enuff changes the size.Size:Optimized:SmallMediumLargeActualDaryl

OOPs I just re-read the originall post. RECEIVE not SEND sorry bout thatDaryl
First, a big thanks to Apple for its naming conventions. All its iLife apps never carried/reported the same version numbers after a few updates. Every year their name was updated to whatever the current year was; 08, 09, 10, 11, etc. But the version numbers lagged way behind. I now have Garageband 6.0.5, iDVD 7.1.2, iMovie 9.0.4, iPhoto 9.2.3 and I don't even know what iLife is, anymore. Is there an '12 batch out yet?
So I have no idea if my 9.2.3 version of iPhoto is the same as Dick's iPhoto "V.11." But I don't think I've ever seen an Apple app with a scroll bar on the "left."

no "evident" zoom controls.
Did you look at any of my uploaded images?
Nor have I been able to decipher exactly what this sentence means:QUOTE
I have been using the e-mail function in iPhoto to reduce the dimenisons of jpeg attachments to e-mails that I occasionally receive (say, in 300 dpi) meaning they appear on my 27" display s though they are 10 x 12 feet in size
It appears that you already know of the "Share->Email" function of iPhoto. But I'm now not even certain how you are viewing a "jpeg attachments to e-mails that I occasionally receive (say, in 300 dpi) meaning they appear on my 27" display s though they are 10 x 12 feet in size." In what app are you viewing them?1. Mail
2. iPhoto
3. QuickLook
4. Other
As for finding the original, I had assumed that you had imported it into iPhoto. If so, it should be one of the last dated images in the "Photos" Library or in the "Recent->Last Import". Possibly even still on your iPhone, if you didn't delete it. If none of those places have it, I'd be happy to send you a large image, suitable for a Desktop picture, so you could et a screen capture of those scroll bars in iPhoto.
I very much dislike seeing questions being left unresolved...
Paddy, I think I have used LionTweak to set the scroll bars to always visible. I agree the default setting was distracting and un-needed on a 'real' computer!
I only wish that the SIMBL developers would get it compatible with Lion so the sidebar colors would remain in Finder windows. I almost always have two Finder windows open and the bland, same-ness of the icons is not helpful.

My error. I was fatigued. Make that "Right"

That is as precise as I am able to state it. Sorry if it remains murky.
I think Daryl said the same thing . . .

- Of course I imported into iPhoto. I meant to report that. It was sent by my daughter from her iPhone just after reaching home after the game
- It was so flawed, and I thought beyond usefulness, when I finished my original TeeEss post I hosed it.
This is what I now enjoy . . .

- Thanks for the offer but no thanks. My energy for this issue is about gone.
Next time I find myself confronting such a vexing problem, I'll come back to this text for the solution.
Thanks to everyone.
