The B&W shot of Homer on the fence post really tickled me

Saw the forecast last night which mentioned the high winds "in northern Scotland" but we could see from the map that you are definitely not being left out. Mild down here (min 50F tonight) and it's going to be windy and wet. No change there then

Tried to post on your blog, but couldn't ... love the photos of Homer, especially where he's tapping to come in.

Gooby eyes is the vernacular for runny watery eyes (ie goob) in the corners. It can be an infection or the wind but it makes their eyes weep and crusty which is uncomfortable for them.

PS: What the heck are sausage sarnies? Onslow and Daisy eat them in Keeping Up Appearances and I wonder how they compare to a Bacon Butty.

Sausage Sarnies are sausage sandwiches (sausage, butter put between two slice of bread or a roll)
Bacon Butty is a bacon sandwich (bacon, butter put btween two slices of bread or a roll)

Well, we wish the two of you better health

Not windy down here, but it is snowing - fortunately too wet to settle on the road, so OH should be OK for her 50-mile drive home. Forecast for temps to climb overnight to mid-40s with sunshine by the middle of the day. But we'll take what we get

I know the feeling.

Hope Celt is doing okay. Hope you are doing better. Hurting for all of you, and hoping for the best.

Kimmer, bless you for your kind thoughts. I will have a think and thank you xxx
Celt is ok (ish). He is not is usual self. I am not sure but I think this rather set him back a bit. Time will tell. He enjoyed his walk today but his coat has lost its shine from worry, probably (he is a worrier).

Frances - Whatever is happening I hope it's going to make you better! I was going to ask what you were going to do about moving the Blog. My humble one-pager (also at Posterous) isn't worth paying $5 a month. I've tried to do an automatic transfer to Tumblr but it just sat there and spun!

A friend did it all for me as I was panicking and being pathetic.
Sorry. I think I sent off for my backup, then there was a green button (after an email perhaps?) saying I Blog ready to download.
But what my friend did and how is a complete mystery to me.

Oh, poor chickens.
I do so love chickens, not that I'd raise them myself.
Why does Taktur need the special food? If you've blogged about it, I've forgotten. He sure is a pretty fella.
-
He gets feeding up because he is growing and in work. Hard work, training while being backed (I hate the word “broken”). So he needs more topline and muscle so he can work.

I wonder what kind of thing they would accept for securing a person laying down here and there in a non-ambulance. I've never studied the rig they use in our ambulances luckily enough.
-
A hospital called GBH - Love it

Glad it didn't live up to the usual meaning and that you are now home, safe and sound. If all the roads on Shetland are like the one in your picture, they're better surfaced than the ones around here. But then yours don't get supermarket artics pounding up and down them all day every day!
And Jo is the archetypal "friend in need". Glad she was there for you
-
GBH is the best name ever for a hospital. The thing is it is so much part of our lives, we forget to snigger every time we say it!
Jo is one of those friends. I have few friends, know many but she is the best. There is no tally sheet and we would both bust a gut for each other and do regularly. I have never laughed so much with anyone else. Knicker wetting while you are crying with laughter type!

By the way, where on earth did the name Beeble come from?
As for the NHS, guess they're covering themselves - 'we told you not to ride, so we're not to blame ... for anything... so you can't sue us'
And on a linguistic note - just love the way rearranged hyphenated. Had to read that twice

She was a mare I borrowed last summer. I can't mind her name but she was nice.

In an earlier blog entry, Frances, you mentioned the quote about golf being a good walk spoiled. Found an entry on a site called Quote Investigator, which says it is often attributed to Mark Twain, but they can find no evidence to support that. However, if you have nothing better to do - Hah! I hear you say
- there's a good page read there.
Looks like a site well worth bookmarking.
-
I think I found that page when I was trying to attribute the quote. Agreed, interesting page. I always thought it was WC who said it but then found it was perhaps Mark Twain and then that page. So, that is why I think I said someone once said.....Interesting read though. I love stuff like that!

Anyway, when I asked Daisy if we looked like a normal family. Her reply was “No, thank God!”

Meant to ask you, Frances - we watched that Shetland drama and I noticed the main character always referred to the town as "Lerrick". I'd always understood it was pronounced with the 'w' and not like Berwick, so how do the locals say it?

Photos of spectacular scenery were fantastic. I

Going out for a trek.
I keep praying that you'll eventually be able to ride. Photos were grand as always, and the snow ... Yuck! It's been very cold here as well. More like early winter weather. So strange.

Yes, thanks for the dog-walking scenery picture; I just finished reading a book set on the Isle of Skye and this was how I pictured it! But looking on the web I see more rocky and rugged terrain!

The "scary bit" problem is something that I noticed the first day of trail riding when I was a scout; I think it was a bit of black plastic trashbag that blew up right in front of us that spooked first my horse and then two other horses that were behind me when they came up onto it. Although I've not ridden a lot in the years since then I suppose that it has something to do with the way the horse sees the world. Do they not have binocular vision like we do? I don't know; not every horse spooked, I suppose some of them were used to such things or just didn't notice it when it was chattering about in the wind!

Very nice too - I prefer dogs, but both my son's family and Caroline's daughter's family have cats. My son's two, Muffy and Tango (who's orange of course - think Garfield) don't get on very well but generally tolerate each other. However, Muffy regularly gives Tango an undeserved slap (with sheathed claws) from her perch on the arm of the settee as he comes warily into the room. Seems to be just a slightly sadistic game on her part. Tango just makes a run for safety

For Kimmer
My camera base is a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV
The lens used for the flowers was a Canon EF 180mm F3.5L Macro USM
The lens I use for the "action" shots is a Canon EF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS II USM
And the lens I use for the Northern Lights photos is a Canon EF 24-70mm F2.8
I love them all equally.
Some of my little grotty pictures are taken with the Canon Powershot G9 which I am beginning to loathe and detest.
It is about to be replaced by the Leica V-Lux 4
I do, however, really like the little camera in my iPod 5th Gen - now I am getting to grips with it.
I only use a tripod for the Northern Light photos.

Re your blog mention of RWL - might have guessed Adobe were involved!
QUOTE
RWL is a raster file format that is used for representing photographs captured by digital cameras, especially Leica ones. RWL was initially created by Adobe System to function as a graphic format for archiving RAW images.
Considering RWL files are unprocessed, they cannot be printed and modified with common graphic editors.
When users want to access RWL images, they will require specialized graphic viewers.
Amazingly, RWL does NOT feature in the list of 200 formats that can be imported by Graphic Converter. But if you want to experiment you can download and try it free.
And we were quite warm down here too - sat in the garden and enjoyed a couple of choc ices we bought last summer. Summer was July 17th IIRC

Some we do, some we don't. It has to be the right home. We have to weigh up the pros and the cons. Pros - he is taking our name out there. Always wherever he goes, in shows, they will say Thordale Borealis or Arcturus..... so that is the best advert for our stud and breedlines.
We also have Daddy so what use is another colt to us that can't breed with any future mares we keep (same Daddy)?
Also we don't fall in love with those we know we want to sell. We love certain ones and they are for keeps, like Fivla (I was offered a blank cheque for her last year) and some of our riding horses but we breed to sell. We knew that when we started so we try very hard just to give them the best upbringing and start before we send them on their way to the nicest homes we can find.
It is not an exact science and we have been let down before. There is little you can do to safe-guard their future.
(and there is always a tiny voice that makes us want to keep them all)

Too funny. It's like that one rock and roll song where everyone messes up the "not talking about moving in" to be all kinds of weird things -- and in the movie LONG KISS GOODNIGHT he sings "not talking about the linen" until she corrects him.
-
Thanks Kimmer

Just spent an hour following links as a result of your post.... Found "Misheard Lyrics" and there are some lol ones and some that are, shall we say, not family friendly (rather like the IMDB quotes from Long Kiss Goodnight

What does the term "messages" refer to? I've seen you use it a number of times... Is it what we call on this side of the pond, "errands" or "running around" ??
Just a matter of snoopyness.

So glad you are able to ride.

In yesterday's post, in the second picture, what are the green plants in the row in front? They look like succulents, but mostly they look like something I should have and grow.
-

no idea. succulents for the garden
-
no idea. succulents for the garden
Oh yes. Thought that's what they were. I have some of those, not all. Time to hit the nursery up the road.
-
The travelling market brought them. Loads of them all lined up on the pavement. We are going back there today with the ponies so I can ask. No one spoke much English, though!
-
OK...I understand all the words "traveling market....Lined up on the pavement, etc., etc....", but I don't understand...
Obviously 'they' must arrive by boat with all their wares (fresh, hopefully), and set up shop for a number of days...
How can 'they' make enough ( wares, $$$, etc.) to make this profitable for 'them' and affordable for you??
We have "weekend / farmers" markets, where local farmers or those with large gardens sell to those of us who don't have room to grow things, hate to get down on our knees for fear of never getting up again, or only turn things brown with our 'poison' thumbs. But they only travel relatively short distances, not to the end of Gods earth, to sell their wares.
Brief discussion would be greatly appreciated, inquiring minds want to know...

*** sucks teeth ***
It is the same for everyone who brings anything up here, be it for the shops, for private use, for anything really. We all pay extra. We expect to. Even Tesco's charges more for stuff than on the mainland. Hell, we even pay 20p a litre more in diesel and petrol than everyone else and we have our own oil terminal!
Highlands & Islands - the dreaded words on all postage and packaging too. If it comes in the post, we pay more, mostly even though Royal Mail don't charge extra, but couriers do.
Nothing in the market was "cheap & cheerful" but it was to be fair tat and we all knew that. What it is, though, is different and Shetlanders love that. A taste of the mainland and they will happily pay over the odds for that.
The way I look at it is that we don't pay for meat much (most is free) and fish. We have an amazing place to live in and yes it is very expensive but it does keep the grockles and tourons away! You have to really want to be here to live here.

The ponies go to town
-
I absolutely love the pictures of the dressed up ponies in town; all the kids and folks with smile on their faces. . .even the guy with the collection device. They usually have a a 10 man crew of cleaners thoughout the American Royal parade in Kansas City to keep up behind the horses; the kids used to ask "why didn't they go at home!" We also have a small parade at Christmas time with lots of horses and ponies and even minature horses pulling little traps although I don't think that's exactly fair to the little one's!
