Title: New G4
Post by: sokukodo on July 08, 2003, 05:37:32 PM
Ordered the G4 1.42 DP on 6/11 ... the cinema display arrived within a week ... sound card arrived  ... speakers arrived ... the G4 was to arrive by 7/2 ... the last week of June I got an e-mail requesting a call to Apple; I was asked if I wanted to buy the G5 ... no, I want the G4 that I ordered ... so, in response, they pushed the delivery date to 7/10! I'm mentally exhausted. Thanks for allowing me to vent: this experience is leaving a bad taste in my mouth. Sheesh: marketing!  wallbash.gif

Why not get the G5? What is keeping you with the G4?

firstly, would rather wait a year until the rev b (or even c) comes out; secondly, for what I use the mac for, a G4  will do just fine.

But you'll get a much more advanced computer for about the same price.

And while waiting for a rev. b or c of the G5 might get you a faster and even more advanced computer, I highly doubt that the rev. a will have any technical problems.
The times when Apple's first revisions of Macs didn't work properly are long gone.

I say get what you want. smile.gif

There's advantages to both.

Nice to have a choice. smile.gif

I agree..I would have sprung for the G5. Unless you have a bunch of OS9 software that you can't update yet, but then I would still wait. Once you do go with a G5, that new G4 won't be worth much at all.

Delivery date now pushed to July 24th ... this is getting old fast ... If they do this one more time, I'm cancelling the order... I've had the Cinema Display since 11 June.  wallbash.gif

"Delivery date now pushed to July 24th ..."

Any explanation why? Considering you already told them 'no' on the G5.

Due to an unexpected supply delay, we are unable to ship the following
item(s) by the date that you were originally quoted:

... and then it goes on to list the G4 I ordered.

The old standard message. Too bad.
Hope you get it (should) on the 24th.

Thanks, Bill ... I figured that Apple had a backlog of G4s in their inventories ... guess not.

sokukodo, you might want to read Ravens threads.

Sort of coexist with your predicament ... sort of.

ok ... came in from work today to discover an email from Apple requesting me to call ... I was informed that the 1.42 DP was no longer available; the only option is a 1.25 DP ... or a G5  oops.gif ... I went with the G5 for $300 cheaper. The new system:
250 Gigs of HD
2 Gigs of RAM
Radeon 9800 Pro graphics card
Superdrive

I already have the 20" Cinema Display.

What I forgot to ask the rep is, will the M-audio Revolution sound card work with the G5? I'm assuming it will.

I asked him when it will be delivered, and he said "some time in August ...", and that because I ordered originally on 6/11/03, I "would be at the top of the list for delivery ..." (yeah, right!)

Am I happy? yes ... but ... I AM SO FRUSTRATED!

Understandable. Kind of Good News/Bad News. smile.gif

The Card will probably work. Have to wait and see.

On the other hand.

You're going to have the fastest computer on the planet.* smile.gif

*Allegedly.

Was talking to the local mac dealer late yesterday afternoon.
Brought up the 1.42 DP in the conversation.
He made the comment that he would be surprised if there were any 1.42s still left in the apple camp. Then he said jokingly apples production belt has been cleaned off and ready-to-rock with the G5.

Apple sure put you through a lot!

Congratulations on your new G5! I'm sure you'll be happy with your decision to go that route.

Did you get the AppleCare with it? For all the trouble, Apple should give that to you. tongue.gif

Thanks, Bruce ...
I've had the Applecare package since the 11th or 12th of June as well as the 20' Display. I'm on "pins and needles" until the G5 ships!

Not sure how applecare works as far as retroactive [could look up mine I suppose] but I'd take a look at the fine print.
Why have it 'wasting' days/weeks when you haven't received the G5 yet.

Then again the machines "ID" has to be punched into their data banks for applecare to be active.

This post will self-destruct in ten hours. smile.gif

One thing I am wondering: I see that the 2 ghz DP will have slots for PCI-X cards; can a regular PCI card be installed in a PCI-X slot?
