QUOTE
QCad is a free open-source 2D CAD system for Linux, various Unices and Windows. The developers main goals are to build a stable, fast and easy to use CAD for everyone. One doesn't need any knowledge of a CAD program to start working with QCad.

Yes M_B, it’s a “Good Thing” as Martha would say, and it’s a real reason for me to migrate to OSX as well. I have forwarded this article to friends who left Macs just because of the “Cad” issue, they’ll be happy to see the option has returned. wink.gif

While it's nice to see an open-source alternative, there has always been a very good cross-platform alternative to the 800-pound gorilla (AutoCAD) in ArchiCAD. The architectural office DiNisco Design Partnership, that has designed the last 4 schools built in North Andover, MA and whom we just hired to design another school, is an all-Mac office, using ArchiCAD. It is compatible with AutoCAD file formats and is available for OS X. I've talked to Ken DiNisco about ArchiCAD and he said that new members of the firm sometimes grouse about having to learn another CAD program (most are versed in AutoCAD) but once they do, they usually prefer ArchiCAD.

For a good list of CAD software for Mac, see:

http://www.tenlinks.com/Cad/products/MAC/cad.HTM

A while ago I was reading an article about CAD software in US architectural firms and was surprised to learn that according to an AIA survey in 1999, about 33% of them use Macs. And only 53% of them or so used AutoCAD. (there is more discussion of these numbers in the article below)

Wow Paddy they’ve come along why since 1999 and when (I think it was) AutoCad wasn’t writing or hadn’t written for the Mac in OS8.6. Many were buying Virtual PC in their efforts to use it, though it failed to work with any efficiency. That’s when last I looked into it, and just recently I was thinking about Blue-Printing something and a Cad program came to mind. For my use a small program would suffice, I don’t build that much anymore, but I like the Cad programs, used them in school on a Mac waaay baaaack when. sad.gif

Bill would that be the new XJR?
