Title: Google Chrome
Post by: Frances144 on July 03, 2013, 05:09:23 PM
I have just binned Google Chrome - it annoyed me once too often and I don't like the way Google plan to take over the world.

What web browsers do you use, apart from Safari, which I have reverted to?

While I agree with your distaste for Google, I think Chrome is the only browser that runs Flash® in a sandbox. Does Firefox also do that? The advantage is that you can have the flashy stuff (no pun intended, of course!) some sites demand but you don't have to put up with the garbage that Adobe puts all over one's drive(s). And it's security problems are restricted to the browser. Plus, when it needs updating, Chrome takes care of that, also. I can now pretty much ignore Flash®.

Is there something in particular that you are annoyed by in Chrome?

I gave up on Safari as it crashed once too often on me.

I reluctantly gave up on the latest version of FF due to a bug that BUGGED me no end.

I now use Chrome (even though I swore I'd never use it!), and surprisingly, I'm very pleased with it.  whistling.gif

What is this "garbage that Adobe puts all over one's drive(s)"?  In its latest forms Flash seems to be a fairly tidy install....... ???

My Safari rarely crashes and I use it pretty much exclusively.  FreFire I use to connect through my UK proxy to stream BBC and the like because you can set the proxy for FF only and turn it off at will whereas to use a proxy with Safari you have to change System Preference or switch SP with Locations.

As for Chrome (never liked it much on cars ;-} ) I stay away from Goog as much as possible.  If you don't like what Facebook does with your personal data you really shoud have a mad hate on for Google.

Safari  6.0.5   1st choice.  Never a problem

Firefox (just down loaded v22) Close 2nd choice

(click to flash enabled)

OmniWeb 5  as last resort

 Chrome   does not exist here

Glad I am not alone on Chrome loathing.  I shall try Safari again and look at others.

Going slightly offtopic.gif .... did anyone else see the Google welcome page that urged people to sign a petition against the NSA invading privacy?

Thought that was a bit rich coming from them - the folk who "accidentally" logged IP details as they took pictures for Street View  rolleyes.gif

Maybe they just object to the competition biggrin.gif

On topic - I use FireFox (now feels much faster in v22.0) as my main browser on the iMac (ML), with the occasional foray into Safari (6.0.4) and don't have problems with either. Never been tempted to try Chrome.

Browser loathing runs in cycles. Mainly, I think, because that is the one category that is still evolving and (usually) improving. Fortunately, there is a fairly large group to choose from and 'love'... until a better/different one comes along in a few months. smile.gif

I use Safari for most things, but since I design websites, I have to use them all to check that everything works in all browsers (something a few of the "big" guys apparently still don't bother to do...) and I also use the Firebug plugin with Firefox a LOT when developing a site.

Safari, with Click to Flash and Ad Block is my normal default. However, it's not the fastest (according to Sunspider) nor the most HTML 5 compliant (according to html5test.com). And it still has memory leaks - very apparent after a long time running and with lots of windows open. If you want speed, try Maxthon - it's the top-rated for that. Some people are leery of running it because it's Chinese, but given what we now know about the US and various allies, I'm not sure I'm going to be bothered worrying about that. I downloaded it a while ago and then forgot about it. I just started it up and ran Sunspider - it came in 2 ms behind Chrome (the fastest) and much faster than Safari which was taking almost twice as long to do things. It's the best browser on the HTML5test.com site. It scores 100 on AcidTest3 (CSS3 test). I think I may give it a bit more attention!

Maxthon requires minimum 10.6.8........ so unless you have upgraded from the 10.5.6 in your sidebar profile it's a no go........

Ah, interesting. I have it on the MBP 10.7.5 and it is running fine.  I have upgraded the iMac to 10.6.8 so will give it a go there too.  Bye-bye Chrome. It put up quite a fight too!

I would appreciate a report on Maxthon whenever/if convenient.  TIA

Perhaps an update of your Profile... at your convenience, of course. It really makes getting some answers faster when we know the hardware/software involved. yes.gif

Just to be devil's advocate for a moment.............

On the one hand, I have a problem with publicly listing my stuff in these equipment profiles on personal security grounds as it provides a convenient list of what a thief might expect to find if he came to the house.

On the other hand, such listings seem like a display of a kind of material narcissism, which is not generally in my character.

I hear you rgray and then I thought "oh, what the heck!" and updated the lot including an up-to-date picture of me!

I will probably remove that when I can find a better one!

I have iPod - hear me roar!

Well I have it as my prime browser on my MBP.

Interesting.

A bit prone to popping up new tabs rather than using the one you have if you ask it to open a site.  This results in millions of little tabs!

It is quick, easy to use.

The Bookmarks are not simple to set up but are achievable if you just persevere (I forgot to export mine from Chrome to Maxthon before I removed Chrome).

So, on the whole, yes I like it.  We are just getting to know each other!

I've been using it off and on for the past couple of days and my experience is much the same as Frances'. I did import my Safari bookmarks - that was a simple, one click operation (I hadn't binned Safari, of course!). I will need to investigate the tab behaviour further - as Frances says, you end up with a lot of 'em!

What?! You're still keeping bookmarks in a browser? wacko.gif laughhard.gif

Surely Maxthon has prefs for how/when to open in a new tab. It's not a bad habit to delve into the prefs of any new app before jumping in with both feet (or fists, in my case. blush-anim-cl.gif). What's available probably depends on what the Chinese developers 'borrowed' from whatever browser they used for the basis of the app. rolleyes.gif

[rant]As for worrying about what might be extracted from one's browsing by using a Chinese Internet product, I doubt it would be anything to do with national security but most likely any and everything about one's personal info that could be of value in the market place. I don't think China (or its usually State-owned companies) are much interested in an individual's political leanings but I'm positive they will do anything in their power to steal anything of financial benefit.[/rant]

I have adjusted Preferences to get rid of the billion tab situation!
