On all my other Macs, we just hit command i, get info, and we can copy the picture of the icon onto our hard drive or any folder. This wont work on the new mac, here is a screenshot to show that problem.
I love to customize the desktop,,,,,,
Ive tried everything,,,,,

Any solutions I've found involve Terminal. I never go there. 😬

Haven't tried that in Mavericks. I won't be at my Mac until tomorrow afternoon and I'll give it a try. I suspect you'll have to be logged in as an administrator, however. And Apple may have decided to block that function on their apps. Perhaps someone will have an answer by tomorrow. In the meantime try searching the interweb for something like "change icon images in Mavericks" or use "10.9" instead of "Mavericks."
-
What a process, this took me all day long to do this transfer, but I think its done. THe app store with my Apple ID was problematic, as I forgot my log in name.
But got that running now, and there is a firmware update, UGH, but it has to be done. Reinstall all my PS and PSE stuff too,, arghhhhh.
And many of my third party apps have to be updated and their passwords and licence stuff put in. Egads what an ordeal!
But its almost done,,,,,,,
This icon thing is stupid, I cant imagine that they would take that ability out, as most of us want to customize our desktops and our icons.
Thats a Mac thing and if they take that away, its dumb of Apple.
Anyway our dinner will be toast if I ignore it any longer,,,,,
back later,,,,,

Still didn't start using a password, app info, personal info manager?! Even when you knew you'd be transferring all that to a new machine?!! Might be a good idea to do that before worrying about making icon changes?
-
Everything was just fine, except for this icon problem. No problem with passwords after I got the Apple ID one reset. Ambrosia problem is being worked on for SnapzPro, its there, they just have to retrieve it for me.
The other things you mention were OK.
But I do NOT want a password to just use the computers, tho everything else like the software, banking stuff, and many more, require them. But I dont want to have to log into my own computers every time I use them.
Everything seems to be working fine now.
I will have to re-install some of my Adobe stuff, I knew that, and have the DVDs ready to do it. And I de-authorized most of them on the computer my grandson will have tomorrow morning, and will have to go thru that re-authorizing process tomorrow. Gee, I do have a lot of Adobe stuff!
The only one I cant find the serial number for is Fireworks, and I bought that one way back when we had the academic discount, which went away when my husband retired. BUt we cannot re-activate that one for some odd reason.
I sure learned a lot today!
Thanks again,
Jane

There are only two passwords not kept in a password manager. The one you should be using for your Mac, seriously. And the one to access your password manager. They both keep anyone else from accessing anything on your Mac and anything else that needs a password. Only my wife knows my Mac password. And we both have the same password for 1Password. So, if anyone besides her steals my Mac, they will have a wee bit of trouble accessing my other passwords. On e in the possession of your machine, most thieves with a little Mac knowledge will be able to get it started. But you may be able to locate it if you have Find My Mac enabled.
Not using a password on your Mac is simply a asking for trouble, especially if there are youngins around. They may not have evil I intensions, but they can accidentally do things you regret!
-
I really despise passwords, but I do have to think this over. The kids have not created any problems so far, and we live in an extremely low crime area. Might put in a big password to open the Mac, but would I have to type the damn thing in every time I wanted to use the computers? If so, forget it. If not, yes, I would do it.

I'm not using 10.9, so can only point you to tips from others without knowing if they'll actually work ...,,,... anyhow I found this thread about icons at the Apple support forum:
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5507782
-
Oh, That looks like the problem, but I will have to do it tomorrow, my eyes have had it for tonight.
Thanks for the rescue, its rather odd that they would mess this great thing up for a new OS?
-
Yep, that the way I've always done it; find an icon, not just an image, that you like. Then it's the standard copy and paste.
BTW, if you don't want a password when you log in, you don't have to use one. It's your decision, as are all the other practices you use. Most people even allow HTML display in their emails!
-

Jane, you can't copy the picture FROM the Get Info Preview - you have to copy it from either the Finder or Preview or Photoshop.
Click on the image you want to use in the Finder (or in a photo app), then COPY it, then PASTE it on the little icon in the upper left corner of the Get Info window. That works - I just changed a bunch of my icons, which I'd actually not bothered doing in eons - so long in fact, that I had completely forgotten how to do it and had to look it up!
http://www.wikihow.com/Change-Mac-OS-X-Icons gives the basics.
-
Thank you all!
It used to be so easy,
http://www.techsurvivors.net/forums/index....ost&id=2920
But I will get it working to get my desktop back looking good.
A couple of other questions,
I thought all new Macs came with Mavericks, 10.9 but this one came with 10.8.5, and when I was using the app store, the error message said I had to change the apps to work with an earlier version of OS? Or something like that. Im assuming I need to download 10.9 and install that, then update all my apps?
Snapz Pro isnt accepting my code, said its invalid, but Ive got a new code from them, but it wont work either, so Ambrosia said they would get back to me later. I did pay about $30 for it a few years ago. Its nice.( The hot keys have changed though)
More questions, but our grandson will be here shortly, so I better get the birthday stuff ready.
Thanks again, this sure is fun getting a new machine! Got the printer working this morning too, so I could print out the birthday stuff.
Edit, added the picture showing the OS difference.
-
Well, it worked for Apple icons like Macintosh HD and Time Machine. But I couldn't get it to take with the Western Digital drive that I've got named Super Duper. 2 out of 3 ain't bad!
Jane -
My brand new Mini also came loaded with 10.8. I'm sure that it has to do with production dates. Our machines likely were already made and sitting on a shelf somewhere when Mavericks was introduced. I didn't want the hassle of learning my way around one OS only to upgrade a couple of days later. So I got the Mini up and running and immediately went to Mavericks. I've already made a couple of nice envelope templates in Pages. Lots to learn about this brave new world after sticking with 10.6.8 and Appleworks for so many years.
-
Oh was my grandson thrilled! He was about bouncing off the walls with glee!
I will upgrade to 10.9 as soon as I can.
Still havent figured out the icon thing, but the thing that is really bothering me now, is last night I had them networked.
But this morning all I get is Connection Failed. Darn, as I always have both HD on the desktop of the big Mac, so I can move stuff back and forth. This really will slow down my classwork if I cant get them networked.
Oh, woes that come with a new computer, thank goodness for you all, we will get it worked out sooner or later.
I have to reinstall PS and PSE too.
-
Oh, more troubles, I have to re-install PS and PSE and a couple of other things from their DVDs.
But I cant find the slot on my new computer? I NEED photoshop really desperately, so what do we do? Do I go out and buy an external Disk drive?
Or can I hook up my Time Machine and get all my Photoshop stuff out of that?
I do not want Adobe's creative cloud, and have all my programs on their original DVDs. Egads, this is not my day.
Thank god I have my old 24 inch Mac with all my programs on it.
Yup, just called the Apple store where I bought the new Mac, for $81 , so I better get over there and buy one.
-
I believe Apple stopped including optical drives last year.
-
Its either go to the store and part with another $81, or could I get all my Adobe programs off my Time Machine HD?
Asks me for an iCloud password, which I assumed was the same as my iTunes account, and the one I use for the app store? Evidently it isnt?
I think its time to go outdoors and start working on the fall leaf cleanup, and mow the lawn one more time. Thank god the lawnmower, the rakes, and the blower and trimmer dont use software, or I would be in the nuthouse by then.
-
Jane, if it's Photoshop CS6, you can download it here: http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-...-downloads.htmlThen put in your serial number.
If it's CS5, you may be able to use Migration Assistant and move it that way (not sure that you can specify just ONE application, though). Simply copying Adobe apps tends not to work, as they install bits and bobs all over the place.(Didn't you use Setup Assistant as we suggested and have it move all your apps, files and settings??? Would have made life a whole lot easier...you wouldn't have had to reinstall things as you've apparently been doing)
PSE 12 can be downloaded here: http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cf...ents&loc=us - then put in your serial number.
PSE 10 can be downloaded here: http://prodesigntools.com/photoshop-elemen...emiere-pre.html (actually, download links for CS6 and PSE12 on that page too...)
If you need PSE 11, I cannot find it (not legit copies, anyway) - you could call Adobe to see if they have a link somewhere they're not making public.
-
Migration asst, moved all the Adobe stuff over, but it all has to be reinstalled. Ive been going thru opening all my apps and programs, and its only Adobe stuff that needs the reinstall.
Setup asst. also worked just fine. Its the Adobe bits and pieces like you say. So I will install them afresh from their DVDs, but first I sure will try your info first, as I have all their boxes and serial #s. Adobe was the only programs that had this problem of not installing. All my other stuff, even old third party Fractal programs are working just fine.
Interesting that I got a great rep with Apple Care, and he solved my networking problem, had to restart BOTH computers. Easy fix thank goodness.
He also got CD networking, so you put the DVD in the old computer and it shows up on the new one's desktop. That worked fine but not Adobe though for some odd reason.
With Mavericks, if the first install fails, just keep trying, it worked on my second try. Thats not unusual.
The issue with iCloud cleared up on its own, probably got the info from my iPhone.
And the last thing he helped me with was the icon turning into your own customized pictures, he found that this is a known issue with Mavericks, and probably/hopefully will be in a new update soon. Many many people have called about that. I love to customize my desktops. Remember Kaleidoscope with the old OS 7, that was just amazing, it was really funny. I have some old screenshots of mine.
Thank you so much for this Adobe downloading site!!! I have all my serial numbers copied off of my Adobe account page.
And you have just saved me the $81 bucks for the external optical DVD drive!
This has been a bit of an ordeal, but you all here have saved the day again! Plus Mike from Apple care for the unusual stuff.
-
The Adobe stuff still wont work, and the Apple Care guy tried to walk me thru the Adobe re-installs, but it didnt work for either him or me.
He has had other people with the same problem. So advised me to call Adobe next week.
I use Photoshop and Elements daily, so it would be pretty nasty for Adobe to not be able to deal with transferring our programs to newer computers for their customers.
But I will sure make the call.
I do have this older 24 inch Mac with every conceivable version of PSE and PS on it, but I want to use them on the faster and larger screen computer.
They should be able to fix this, its not an OS problem, as when I was before Mavericks, the same problem was there.
I have a couple more things up my sleeve, but if a shiny new download(PS CS6) is corrupted, then my other plans probably wont work either.
Oh, this is frustrating, and hope Adobe gets the fix up soon. They want us to go thru all sorts of 'help' and upload tons of 'help' software, 'Air' and stuff like that.
But this should not be necessary, they are the ONLY group of programs that are toast on my new Mac!
-
This Adobe thing is a woeful conundrum now, Ive been on the chat with them for hours, and nobody can figure it out. So I sent all the invoices for ALL my Adobe products. I cant imagine how messed up this is. We should be able to De-authorize any program on the old computer, migrate everything to the new one, then authorize it there.
Not one single of my huge load of software failed, except for the Adobe stuff. Are they telling us to give up and join Creative Cloud, by disabling all our old stuff? Or what the heck is going on.
I probably will have to call them and hope to goodness that I get someone better then the chat guys. This has to be fixed, though I do have all my Adobe stuff on this older 24 inch Mac. Not my new PS CS6 however and I sure need it.
I am disappointed in Adobe. But I cant get along without PS and PSE.

Um...can you describe what's happening? Are the Adobe apps all there, apparently installed, but simply refuse to start up?
If so, it's possible that the problem is simply missing Java, which most of them seem to need. I had this happen with Dreamweaver last night - simply wouldn't restart. Because I'd had issues with scrolling (horribly jerky) at the Retina "best for display" resolution settings, recent complete freezes (think Safari-related) I finally decided to do a reinstall, without moving my settings over, but moving everything else. It's cured whatever ailed this Retina, but when I checked all my Adobe apps to make sure they run, DW refused to do anything. Googled it and found references to the same symptoms in Mavericks with InDesign and Photoshop (which, strangely, on my machine, were working). So, I decided to have a go and install Java - though I was pretty sure I'd done it fairly recently, yet I couldn't find it in the Safari prefs. It's in "manage website settings" in the Security section.
Anyway - solved my problem with the uncooperative DW (nothing at all happened when I tried to open it before installing Java).
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1572?viewlocale=en_US
Try this and let us know.
-
Oh I wish it was Java, but its more than that, I am afraid.
I have a load of screenshots that Ive added to my site, and told them they HAVE to look at it, as it describes the problem clearly. Provided them with the link on their lame Ticket page stuff. They wont/cant communicate directly with you any more.
I dont want to put this on a forum, as it might be able to be Googled, but over email, I could send the whole doggone mess to you to analyse, including the copy of one of the Chats.
Though, you probably dont want to wade thru it all. Im thinking it might be of some use to people who will encounter this, as the Apple guy said it was happening.
And if you get it from an AppleCare guy telling you that Adobe is having problems, I have to believe it.
Im cooking dinner as we have been on the beach all day with the dogs, and we had a Lilly who rolled in a dead fish issue, so Im running way behind, so I will be up early tomorrow to continue working on this Adobe mess.
Indeed, I love the programs, PS and PSE I use daily, thank goodness I have the older programs on my old 24 inch Mac here.
But its so frustrating not being to use !any! Adobe program on my new Mac, packed with RAM.
Jane
-
Jane, can you put a link to your screenshots on your website here? As long as you don't have a lot of personal info in them, it should be fine to post the link here.
What exactly is the issue? - you haven't described it.
Other than the Java issue, which I could find lots of references to, there don't seem to be any really severe problems with Photoshop or Elements and Mavericks, other than a Wacom tablet driver issue (driver needs updating - otherwise users were getting blank menus).
As I noted - I did end up reinstalling Mavericks because there was something wonky causing a couple of persistent and annoying problems. The reinstall did fix them - I was careful NOT to migrate all my settings, since I suspected that there was a corrupted .plist or two somewhere. Solved the issues.
So, there is always that option. Make sure your backup is up to date, erase and install using the recovery partition and then use the Setup Assistant to reinstall apps and your user folder.
But let us know what's going on with the Adobe apps first. Trying to get Apple to troubleshoot Adobe app install problems may not be the best way to get the issue resolved. (Have you looked in the Adobe forums?)

if you get it from an AppleCare guy telling you that Adobe is having problems, I have to believe it.
Unless that's a fairly high level tech, it's really no more believable than what any other tech from any other large company would say. The first and even second tech you get to is hardly ever a certified expert in everything a company produces. Nor are they likely to know the fix for a conflict between their company apps and another. There are just too often a very large number of variables. I'm not saying anyone is intentionally lying, just that what the first (and possibly the second) level tech says, may come from 'water cooler' chatter than company memos. Of course, this is simply my opinion based on personal, anecdotes, not scientifically accurate examinations or studies.
Part of it is simply the 'blame the other guy' mentality.
-
Ive dug thru the Adobe forums and haven't found anything quite exactly like my problem yet. Though there is info on how to re-activate your stuff on a new computer, but I never could get to that page even thru my logged in account.
I will have to sort thru my screenshots as some of my serial #s, physical address, and more, are on them. Since TS comes up on Google, I would rather not post that link.
The Apple guy wasn't criticizing Adobe, he was just saying that he had heard of this issue before, he is a PS user himself.
But a week or so ago, when one of my PS programs would not work on the other older Mac, I was on phone tech support with Adobe. She fixed that particular problem immediately. She could view my account and all my serial numbers and all my receipts, which the Chat guys couldnt do.
Since every single thing is working fine except the Adobe stuff, and I did reinstall Mavericks, I think I will see if I can resolve this issue with the Adobe phone tech today. Almost shouldnt have bothered with the Chat guys.
Will let you know what happens today.
-
QUOTE
...The Apple guy wasn't criticizing Adobe, he was just saying that he had heard <emphasis added> of this issue before...
I rest my case. That was not a "technical" response/answer, simply a personal statement/opinion. These techs are just people! They are not usually even programmers with access to code (regardless of you company). The bigger difference is that they hopefully have more experience with OS X and iOS apps and they speak English as a primary language. Of course, that only helps those of us with similar backgrounds, every thing how hard it is for some foreigners to get support when English is the only language used?
-
This guy was from Minnesota. The poor gals from the Philippines who do the phone stuff for our local newspapers must be off line now.
But the guys from India are OK.
Must be fun working for Apple?

I really despise passwords, but I do have to think this over. The kids have not created any problems so far, and we live in an extremely low crime area. Might put in a big password to open the Mac, but would I have to type the damn thing in every time I wanted to use the computers? If so, forget it. If not, yes, I would do it.
I almost can't believe I'm reading this. Your admin password is absolutely the only protection you have for your computer should it fall into incompetent, malicious or criminal hands.
Running without an admin password or account password is tantamount to planning to lock the barn door after the horse has escaped!!!
You may live in a low crime area but it only takes once and your computer is open to all the wrong people.
The kids may not have "created any problems so far" but that doesn't mean is can't happen.
Not only that but they can read all your email and access all the (naughty(?)) bookmarks. They can install software, potentially trojans. They can delete your files and do just about anything if you have no password. You just have no protection from anything.
The Mac OS is based on Unix which is a highly securable system. It probably ran the servers at your university or college. It is multiuser.
As far as the kids go, you are doing them no favours running without a password as at best it sets a bad example. Passwords and accounts are a fact of life with computers so "despising" them is generally long-term counterproductive. Each user of your computer ideally should have their own user account with their own password. And you can restrict the privileges of each account separately (perhaps to match competence). Apple (with Unix) have made it extremely easy to set up (see Accounts Preference pane). You should enforce the use of these accounts with the kids (and other users, too). They will have to deal with accounts at every level of school and you can start them off with good 'safe computing' habits.
I apologise if this sounds harsh, but I consider running without a basic password to be about the height of computing foolishness.
Caveat emptor.
-
I know I should do this with both Macs.
Actually I have no naughty stuff at all, its the income tax stuff I do for friends and some banking and financial stuff, that should be protected.
I can add the user accounts for the kids too. Have one alrady for my little grandson, the one who got the birthday Mac.
Guess my question is, can I add a password to each Mac, so that when it is turned on, it has to be typed in. But when its only in sleep, then I dont have to put the password in.
Thats what I would do, if it can be done.
-
QUOTE

Both those questions are already answered by perusing the "Users & Groups" pref panel->Login Options, "Automatic login" and the "Security & Privacy" pref panel, General tab. These are not new functions, they have been available for tens of years (actually before OS X!) as well as the recommendations that everyone use them.
Preferences are important and amazing things to know about. Do you know where yours are?!
-
Yup, but never have bothered to look at the Log in options. Never Logged Out?And never have looked at the security+privacy one till right now.Yes, I learn something every day.I will take a look at doing that, but I sure dont want to have to type in a password if I spend a moment in the kitchen or play ball with Lilly in the back yard.
Adobe situation SOLVED!I got on the phone with an Adobe rep this morning, and he led me thru the entire process of re-installing all my programs. It took a couple of hours, but everything is happy and working fine on my new Mac.He did emphasize NOT to ever de-authorize any program, dont do it that way any more. He said to CALL them when you are ready to set up a new computer, and they would guide me thru the process. Or show us links to where it can be done.Thank you all for putting up with me thru this Adobe dilemma!
Jane
-
One more thing, and then I go have a pre-dinner cocktail with my husband and start cooking dinner,,,,,,,,,thats relax time, and no more computer stuff tonight, Im tired of it, and Lilly is too.
Now I have both hard drives open on the new Mac, and am going thru all my 3rd party filters, brushes, gradients, styles, on and on. And my custom actions for PS. I cant do without Flaming Pear filters and my Topaz plug-ins and many many others.
Just dragging them from the other hard drive in PS or PSE to the new program on the new Mac's HD, they will copy fine, and make sure your PS or PSE is not running. Then when you open it, all your extra goodies will be in there. And they are, Im done for tonight.
-
I know I should do this with both Macs.

There is a free application Caffeine that resides on the top menu bar. If you click it, the cup is filled (with coffee?) and the screen will not go into sleep or screen saver. I have used it often/daily, especially for video conferencing, etc. Sounds perfect for you in going to play ball with Lilly.
-
Ah, yes. The 'back yard.' A great place to play with a dog and the kids. Some folks will take advantage of your fun by coming in the front door.
Oh, I know, you always keep the other doors locked or you can see people approaching the front even while in the back and it's a nice neighborhood and very little crime and... and...
We simply can't depend on everyone else for the security of our own stuff. There are actually people around who'll risk jail just to get it!
-
Nahh, who would come in the front door if we are all out in the back? Half the time the ball goes over the roof if the kids throw it anyway and Lilly goes around the house in circles after the kids with the ball.
I like my own desktop pictures and my own screen savers.
Oh, just noticed something,,,,,where the heck is that lovely random display style for the screen saver? I loved that option!
see picture,,,,its not here on my new Mac?
-

Who said anything about changing those?
What OS are you running? Can't tell from your screenshot whether you're in the Desktop or Screen Saver part of that pref.
[attachment=2925:Desktop_...en_Saver.jpg]
-
Mavericks, the newest I guess.
Its that mosaic thing that you click on in the Display Style, the furthest on the right.
THis is my old Mac screenshot, and it was on the one I gave to Max, but its missing on the new one?
-
If you have Mavericks, why not post a screen shot of its panel. It is, apparently much different from what you had (10.6?). You already know how to use the old panel. I thought you wanted to learn the new one. Take a look around on the new version of the panel and check out its controls. I'm sure you can figure it out.
You do see the "Random order" bit on my image, right? It's greyed out because I want the image I have all the time. "Random order" is not applicable, in my case.
As for the "mosaic" question, I think you're correct. I's the only and standard way in Mavericks. Minor change, IMHO.
-
No, its this,
the mosaic moving thing, its pretty cool, and its been on all the previous OS,
forgot to say, this is the screen shot from the new Mac and this wonderful option is GONE.
-
It appears that the Screen Saver Preference pane has indeed been gutted. No 'mosaic'. No ability to select from iPhoto library that I can see. You can select a folder but there is no iPhoto library connection. "Random" seems to get you a random selection of Apple images, not, as before, randomly chosen from a selected iPhoto album.
[attachment=2928:Screen_S...34.29_PM.png]
WTF.....
Mail rules don't work reliably.
Desktop icons meander around or disappear altogether.
Pages gutted.
Damn good thing Maver-yuuchhs was FREE. !!!!!!!!!! It is definitely the most unpolished OSX I have ever seen - and I was in since OS4.......
-
OK, both of you are looking at the Screen Saver part of the panel. I was talking, showing the Desktop image part. Howsome ever, did either of you scroll to the bottom of the list of images on the left-hand panel? Hint: what does the last slide have for a "title?" Mine starts with the letter "R".
Also, even in your own shots, there is a "Shuffle slide order" checkbox. Wonder what that does? Possible add some randomness?
Finally, what are your choices in the Popup menu when you select a screen saver "style?" After all, the left-hand list is not to select the images but the way they are to be displayed. Once you select a style, the "Options" button will display the various sources for images. Those sources are exactly the same (as far as I can tell) the same as for the Desktop images and the sources includes one labeled "iPhoto."
You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it explore the options. er, sumthin like that...
Pictures at 10!!!

What OS level are you looking at? Not Mavericks for certain!!! There is no "Style" popup menu....... that I can see.... The "Random" at the bottom of the left column (see my illustration which is from 10.9) gets you a random selection of screen saver types.....
Unless I am seriously missing something?????????
-
Yes, you are missing something. Of course, it could just my lack of communications skills. Note that I put quotation marks on either side if the word 'style.' It is not capitalized, I did not say it was a label for anything. I simply stated that the list of items in that left-hand panel shows the various "styles" of screen saver methods/displays; the way the images, no matter where they come from, are displayed and change on the screen. Thus the "style" of the screen savers. Just click on one and you can preview that style in the larger area to the right of the list. Just click and watch. This ia a Mac, you won't break it by clicking the buttons/icons/menus.

OK, this may take a bit longer, I can't get the add an image controls to appear, I'll upload the examples to DropBox and point to them. That'll save TS disk space, anyway.
OK, here is what I see when clicking the "Source:" label:
[attachment=2929:Desktop_...n_window.jpg]
Now, selecting the "Photo library..." item gives me the following:
[attachment=2930:Desktop_...ce_sheet.jpg]
So you can plainly see that access to your iPhoto images is still there. The "Shuffle slide order" replaces the "Random" choice for the selected images. And there is a 'Random' "style" available that will cycle through all the built-in screen saver styles with the images you have selected.
Bottom line, what more can you want in a useless function for LCD monitors?

Arggghhhh
I am getting to damn old to be able to communicate, so here we go, look at this and click on all 3 of the links and you will see what I mean.
Do please please look at the mov as that will show what the heck I am talking about.
And see the screenshot from the old computers with the 3 options on where the red pointer Ive put in, and then look at the one from Mavericks where that is NOT there!

Here is my link, click on the mov first please,,,,

In the FWIW category ...
I stopped using a screen saver a few years back, so I hadn't looked at the system pref panel for that -- but I just did.
I'm running 10.8.5 and I do NOT have the options that Jane shows back in post #38 of this thread.

So I had Sneakers check his iMac. He's running 10.6.x and does have that option. So the ability to mosaic whatever pictures you've selected disappeared between 10.6 and 10.8, not with 10.9.
I don't think screen savers are useless. They provide entertainment, and if a user wants them, then they have a useful function. Just sayin'.
-
Yes, you are missing something.

OK, ok!! This is starting to get interesting (if somewhat maddening).....
If I click on the "source" button I get:-
[attachment=2931:Screen_S...26.11_PM.png]
It occurs to me that the difference may be that I a) don't have Aperture and b) I am using iPhoto '09.
What version of iPhoto are you using?
-
I give up. I couldn't care less that I can't see something called "mosaic" in the styles list. Instead there are 21 choices of displaying whatever pictures from where ever you have them. If you call watching images flash by your screen 'entertaining' you don't have enough to do.
Screen savers are useless because LED displays don't "burn in" light phosphorescent monitors did. I quit. Not the least because this software will now not allow me to post a link to a DropBox image exactly as I did in another thread just yesterday!I give up. I am using iPhoto '09.
What version of iPhoto are you using?
Who said I use it?!
I just happen to have it installed and it's version 9.5.
Did you try selecting the "Choose folder..." item? Did you see both images above?
I'm out-a-here! "Say 'Goodnight, Gracie."
"Goodnight Gracie!"
-
It was a simple question.....
iPhoto 9.5? Thank you!!
I am trying to account for the difference between your and my "source" menu display... Near as I can make out so far it has to do with iPhoto version (and Aperture).
Don't bail on us just when it is getting interesting.......
Selecting the "Choose folder..." item simply gets a standard Finder "Choose" dialog.
-
It can be anything you have in your iPhoto folders.
There is a way to find it, but you have to view System/library, which the option to view it has been taken out fairly recently. Can change it back ere, but it might not be easy, as Im reading some hacks.
I am rather upset with what is going on, I should have bought a new Mac for my grandson and kept the 2 year old one for myself. But from Googling stuff, there might be a way to reinstate the goodies which have been taken out.
Its time we walk Lilly, and head to bed, but I think by viewing my video that you see what I am taking about.
Googled it, here ya go, much better video, than I did here in the dark with my iPhone. Look and you will SEE what I am taking about.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTb-XDA6LbY
Im signing off now, and a big disgusted with losing some of the old goodies.
Just before I go, hey Tacit, give us a bit of info on this.

Oh I remember the mosaic feature very well..... It was/is brilliant but it sure used computer horsepower!! It would have the fans whirring in minutes after starting it up....

Ok folks...deep breath.
1. Mavericks is not a disaster (it isn't - really. There are a few issues - most of them are solvable.)
2. A missing screensaver option is not a dealbreaker.
Ok...now. About that missing option.
It's been gone for a while - it wasn't Mavericks that made it disappear, it was gone in Mountain Lion too. I HAVE both Mavericks (on this Retina) and ML (on my Mac Pro.) I guarantee you, the Mosaic option is NOT THERE on either. Sorry, but it's gone. And I doubt it's coming back. And attempts to add it back into Mavericks with the files from a previous OS weren't successful, Jane.
See: https://discussions.apple.com/message/23714619#23714619
As for what Jim is looking at - he's posted screen shots of what looks to me exactly like Mavericks. And rgray, you don't need to have Aperture or iPhoto - you simply need to have some photos - in a folder. See the last item? "Choose Folder"? Pick a folder of photos - and voila.
So...any other pressing questions?
Jane - if you're looking for your Library folder, Apple put the ability to make it visible back into the OS. See: http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/mav...-folder-visible

I am aware of all that, but mosaic was fun and a brilliant demonstration of the art of frivolous coding...

The question is over the submenu not over the Preference Pane. Prior to Mavericks (or as some say, Maver-yucchhs) you could address directly iPhoto events/albums directly with iPhoto '09, no need to arrange in a separate folder, but I suspect this is an issue of me having iPhoto '09 (v. 8.1.2) and XBD having v 9.5

You mean besides Mail rules working seemingly at random (lots around the web about this) and the meandering desktop icons........ Stay tuned.....

As for the Mail rules not working - I've got a whole lot of them, and they seem to be working fine. Mine are entirely aimed at spam control however, so if you're talking about other rules not working, then there do appear to be a few people out there still having various issues, even after the Nov. 8 Mail update. See: http://tidbits.com/article/14287
Meandering/missing desktop icons is a new one to me (well, since your post) - from what I can see, some have managed to resolve it, some not. So...it's a lot like any other OS 10.x update; a few issues - but for the most part nothing that is utterly universal. Every single update has had a few people screaming "OS 10.x broke my Mac!!!" - and then whatever it is gets resolved and the screaming dies down...until it happens all over again with the next release.
The Pages 5 fiasco is not, strictly speaking, part of Mavericks. It IS a disaster if you were using Pages 4.3 and made the mistake of updating - no doubt about it, but at least in that case, you can usually back right out of it fairly easily. Apple blundered big time with it - much as they did with Final Cut X, but time will tell if they fix it enough to make it useful again. I don't know why they did it the way they did, though I've seen a lot of rumours 'round the web suggesting that Apple employees don't use Pages themselves, so therefore don't really understand what people use it for. That seems like a bit of a stretch as explanations go, frankly.
-
My mail works fine, Pages I have not tried yet.
So the only 2 things that I need to resolve is the icon picture thing, and the Apple guy said that would be fixed in an upcoming update.
Oh, just checked to see if the Visualizer was still here in iTunes, and it is.
And the Mosaic issue, Ive not asked about yet, as I want to wait before I call them, for something not quite so frivoulous. Though it sure was fun. I turned the lights off in the room when some guests were here, and in total darkness(no light pollution here), they were awed by my screensaver Mosaics running on both my pre-Lion Macs side by side. Chose pictures of our place in Maine, which they were familiar with.
Oh, well, we are missing the side vent windows on our newer vehicles, but still have them on our big Ford pickup, so you lose some, and you win some,,,,,,,
-
......and the Apple guy said that would be fixed in an upcoming update.
The usual Mac rumour mills say that 10.9.1 is already being 'seeded' to developers.....
-
That will be nice, hope they fix the icon thing.
Wish they would bring the Mosaic back, but thats probably asking too much.
-
FIXED!
No change in the process, get info on the picture that you want to use, then get info on the folder or icon you want to look like the picture.
Highlight the picture one, copy it, then highlight the generic icon or folder, then paste the picture. It will appear.
But here is the trick I just found, you HAVE to change it to a .psd file, .jpg wont work.
Even the Apple care guys I talked with didnt know that and they were very happy that I told them how to do it.
I know its not important, but those of us who love to customize things, want to be able to.
-
Thank you, Jane for returning with the solution to your vexation, always good to know HOW, and not just that it can be done.
Thanks,
Bob K. rnkiii

Yes, I am glad to have found and posted it.
Next comes the Mosaic screensaver issue.
-
Just to clarify the icon situation - Jane is correct; changing a FOLDER icon requires a .psd image file or an .icns file. Changing a file, you can use a .jpg or .png or .icns as per the method I mentioned and linked to in post #12. Changing an app icon can be done using a .png or a .psd or an .icns.
This is NOT a new situation - 10.8 is exactly the same, as I suspect earlier iterations of the OS are as well, though not having them on either of my main Macs and not feeling inclined to traipse upstairs to test one of the old ones at the moment, I'll leave testing of older versions up to those who have them installed.
If you want to save something as an .icns file the easiest way to do it is with the freebie version of Image2Icons: http://www.img2icnsapp.com
And this app will help change icons on folders, apps etc: http://www.freemacsoft.net/liteicon/
Candybar doesn't work in 10.9 and apparently they're not going to update it, in case any of you have used that in the past.
BTW - some links at the bottom of this article to some nice icons: http://mac.appstorm.net/how-to/graphics-ho...-icons-on-os-x/
As for the Mosaic screensaver, it doesn't appear to work in 10.9; a few have tried the hack from 10.8 and failed. So, your best bet is to put in a request to Apple via their Feedback channel.

Yes, now my new desktop looks nice, and Ive customized many of my folders. .psd did the trick. I was wondering why 2 of the 3 AppleCare guys I talked with didnt know about this problem, but they know now how to do it.
Lilly is well represented.
Now for the Mosaic problem: I found this, but its old.

the first message about "reopen" the Pereferences is "normal"
the other one not. it seems that you forgot one file. Remember BOTH:
/System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.framework
AND
/System/Library/PreferencePanes/DesktopScreenEffectsPref.prefPane"
I dont have any of those files on either 10.5.8 24 inch Mac, nor my new one, but I see that some people were able to do it.
I sent several messages to Apple, but I will use that link and send another one from one of my other emails.
Thank you,

Jane, I don't know where you're looking...see screenshot. At least see screenshot when I switch to the other computer since I cannot seem to add an image in any reply in any theme! Argh. We really do need to bite the bullet and get on with updating our forum software...sigh.

Guess I was looking in the wrong place, here is what I have, so far,Next I will look in the preference panes, And here is what Roland said to look for, but where do I go from there I wonder?for got this one,This one didnt upload yet,

OK I have taken both of them, dragged them out and put their copies in a folder from the old Mac which Mosaic is in. So do I insert them into the same places in the new Mac? I am very nervous of doing stuff like this, but if I knew it would work, I sure would do it!

Jane, did you read this from Paddy's post #64?

You are attempting to put files from OS 10.5.8 into 10.9 and expect them to not crash? Why would you want to do that? Certainly, a plist file is only text but the location of the various pieces in that file and their label (keys, dictionary) are vitally important to the app that reads/uses that file. At best, the app will revert to some default settings when the data it reads from a much older version of the plist file supplies useless or even damaging information. What you are trying to do is like putting some old bullets in a gun and hoping that the barrel won't explode when you pull the trigger.
And all this just to get a rather pointless and useless piece of screen saver display style? Sorry, it just doesn't "compute" to me. If that display style is that important, do not give away the computer and the OS that provided it. Seriously!
-
I do like Mosaic, yeah, I guess its useless, but its very pretty especially with many of my iPhoto albums.
I was not about to do this, unless I got the OK from you here. But I did see that this hack does work for some people, but they didnt say exactly what their current OS was.
Several of my classmates have done the Apple feedback already.
I plan not to give this 24 inch one away, but my grandson is extremely happy with my older 27.
Anyway, I will just leave those files alone and not mess with them, just wanted to know why it worked for some people, but I am leery of doing anything that could jeopardize my lovely new Mac.

QUOTE

Impossible to tell without knowing exactly what OS, hardware, etc. they had when they did it. Moving plists out of their normal position is a fairly routine to force an app to re-create the default settings. The biggest problem is that the steps usually say to "trash" the old plist. That is over-kill and will then require more work to re-set all the changes you had made, assuming you remember what they were!
However, replacing plists, especially ones from different OS versions, is something entirely different. It may have been done successfully but I have never, until now, heard of it and certainly never seen it suggested as any kind of fix for a problem. And in this instance it is not even a 'problem,' it's simply an attempt to get something back into the OS that Apple itself removed. Things change. Sometimes we lose things we like. Usually we get new things. Move on and learn the new features.
Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. - Anonymous but famous last words
OTOH, if you really like something, build your own computer! Some people still do that!
Or try using Linux, it's very open to individualization!

The only way I'd try this is via multiple clones - try it on one of them and boot to that. But I suspect that it won't work, simply because there is a boatload of stuff in that first Framework file - including a ScreenSaverEngine.app which is version 5.0 and dated August, 2013, and several .plist files which look like they may be pointing to new versions of things in Mavericks.
Really not worth the messing around, if you ask me. Of course, I don't use a screen saver, and haven't done for the better part of the last decade, as they're really not necessary. They were invented to prevent phosphor burn-in for old CRTs (plasma screens are also susceptible) - with LCDs this is no longer an issue. Even with newer CRTs it had ceased to be much of an issue. My Macs all have screens set to go to sleep after about 15 minutes of inactivity. Now, screensavers are mostly used for entertainment value, as you've been doing with the mosaic option. There are various others that will display a variety of iPhoto photos in different ways. Not the mosaic you're used to, but perhaps a reasonable substitute.
-
OK, I will give up, I didnt think that it would work, but I wanted to give it a chance. And I am glad I asked you all here. I know I wouldnt have done it, unless someone had a way to resurrect Mosaic here, and walked me thru the process.
Yes, Mavericks is really great, Ive been having a lot of fun playing with the new features, as I have been with the new OS for my iPhone.
And the new screensavers are nice too, but nothing like Mosaic.
So back to my classwork, and I wont waste any more time on this.

Good thing too. Messing around in System/Library can be a recipe for disaster that should be reserved for those with a broad working knowledge of Unix-type file structure. Definitely not for the faint of heart. And crossing between system versions!!!...... well - definitely caveat emptor and be prepared for a wholesale backup and system re-install......
IMHO Mosaic was dropped because it was a huge system resource hog that got the whole system very hot and had the fans whirling to beat the band. That said it was a lot of fun and fascinating to watch.
-
I still run Mosaic on this computer, and it doesnt seem to get hot nor crank the fans.
Didnt do that on the one I gave to my grandson either, for some odd reason.
No, I wont mess with anything like this.
At least I have it still on one computer.
-
On re-thinking, my issues with heat/fans vis รก vis Mosaic may have been influenced by the fact that I am a notebook user (exclusively since the PowerBook 100). Notebooks do tend to show the heat sooner.
