Dances With Wolves - lush photography, beautiful scenery, excellent musuc, tremendously done!
To kill a Mockingbird - excellent acting!
Slumdog Millionaire - a real eye opener with excellent child acting and outstanding sound track
Once Upon a Time in the West - also excellent sound track and story
Pirates of the Carribean - swashbucling fun and beautiful women and blockbuster sound tracks
Lord of the Rings - more excellent sound tracks with great cinematography
But a few of my favorites - you probably noticed that I like to turn up the volume!

Of course there are the grandiose visual and historical films but I tend to gravitate to those simple ones with an uplifting moral compass.

I loved Branagh's Hamlet and also Titus with Anthony Hopkins.
I hated reading Shakespeare in high school. I could not figure out what they were saying. But when I see it performed, Shakespeare's amazing! I remember in the early days of Fox, they ran a 2-part production of King Lear with Olivier. Pity they didn't stick to that kind of programming.

I had the same experience with Shakespeare. Reading the dialog is NOT the same as hearing the words spoken by skilled actors. And, I was much too young in Junior High and High School to understand the thoughts being expressed, not to mention the language. In Julius Caesar (mentioned in my post above), Brando plays Marc Antony. The "Friends, Romans, Countrymen" speech is a total tour-de-force and an absolute revelation. Brando's Antony drips with sarcasm, wit, and calculated self-deprecation. It's brilliant.
