I got an iPad 2 for Christmas form my son (I knew buying all those computers for him to get through college would pay off some day).
He must have been playing with it before he wrapped it up. Anyways, when I go to update apps it says "enter password for Samuel Swiech" and I'd like to to have it say,
"enter password for Gary Swiech", me. I don't know much about the iPad and am just getting familiar with it.
He didn't register it, I believe.
How do I go about getting Sam's name off the machine and get mine on so I can do my thing?

Rhoda (my wife) has an iPad 2, if you go into settings and then general you will find an option at the bottom of right hand column listed as reset and in there is the option to reset to factory settings or it's equivalent.

I just down loaded the PDF manual and I know I'll start to get used to it.
My Son put some apps on too and there's a WWII fighter game that looks pretty interesting,
the only problem with the game is that it picks up the internet somehow and I get shot down very quickly!
It came in a nice leather Snugg case. I've got to get my coordination right on the swiping and typing with my thumbs.
This is going to be a riot!

If you like Scrabble-type games, Gary, there is the enormously addictive QatQi (I feel like a crack dealer telling people about it...
). SpeedTiles is another one - I haven't played it yet, but the same friend who got me hooked on Qatqi told me about it. She also told me about Whirly Word, which is fun word scramble game and is my go-to game on my phone when stuck somewhere waiting for something.Qatqi

While it is definitely a good idea to do a reset when you first get a (used) iPad because it cleans house of all settings and allows one to establish their own identity with proper email and all. However you will have to repurchase apps under your own identity.
But such a radical cleansing is not strictly speaking necessary, but is IMHO a very good idea.
However........
All that is necessary is to go into the App Store, scroll to the bottom where you will see the currently used AppleID. Click on that and you will get an option to sign out, which returns with the option to log in so you can use your own AppleID.

I like those types of games Paddy, I will check them out as soon as I get this iPad set up.
I'm reading the users guide now. I haven't found settings yet. I know it was there on Christmas but Sam had a few pictures on it and he took these off
when he went home to Madison,WI after Christmas. I think it was an Icon of a persons head or something and he somehow deleted it or whatever.
I'll do some more reading and see if I can get it straightened out......

I have both a US and a Canadian Apple IDs - mostly because when we moved I still had a lot of credit in the US store, and since then, occasionally there has been something in the US store that wasn't in the Canadian one. I buy iTunes gift cards in the US (or get my husband to do it since he's in the US on business a couple of times a year) as you cannot use a foreign credit card to buy stuff in any iTunes store. I agree with rgray - the restrictions are stupid, but all geared to getting more money into the hands of the content distributors - rarely the artists.
I wish I'd thought to download the 12 days of Christmas app for anything besides Canada! As it was, I think I downloaded all of two things this year - there were waaaay too many kid games!
Of course, now with the falling Canadian dollar, once I've used up my current US store credit, it may not be quite so attractive to buy things there unless the Canadian prices go up (which they no doubt will...sigh.)

It's been a while and I'm not sure I've even tried but the process is not simply backing up and reloading.The point is, you cannot "change ownership" of the apps. You don't even change "ownership" of the iPad. You simply create different users, similar, but more restrictive, in some ways, than on your Mac. Assuming you want to leave the apps already on the iPad, you will simply sign out of the App Store and then sign in with your Apple ID.
Otherwise, unless an app restricts in some way, anyone using the iPad can use any of its apps. For example, some apps may require you to sign in with a password just for that app. That's the way 1Password operates; obviously, you wouldn't want any and everyone to have access to your password/CC info.
A minor problem may be that when you get a notification that an app can be updated, you may have to sign in as the original 'owner'.
I'm not even sure how "Notifications" operate on your model, what OS version does it have?Note: I guess I have a new definition for "egregious." I always thought that meant something was well above what would be called a "nuisance." OTOH, one man's nuisance may be another's major problem.
Where I live, snow is a major problem, egregious, even. To Bob, up in MN, it would be just a nuisance. Which, I think, is the word I used.

When I went to Settings-> General, I don't see the reset option in the lower right hand column. I will check again .

QatQi is very addicting! I started playing it when I went to bed last night and I played for about 30 minutes and was so tired I took it into the living room and gave it too my wife, Colette, and asked her to play it for a while. She loves to do
crossword puzzles.
I woke up this morning to find her in the living room playing QatQi. The first words out of her mouth were "Is this game addicting!" I think she's hooked for sure, look out Rob Ford.
That music that goes along while it plays also has a hypnotic character to it too adding to it's a addictive quality.
