Has anyone upgraded their IPhone to IOS8 yet ? If you did have you had any problems ?

I just did as <Xairbusdriver >suggested and backed up my phone, then downloaded the update. Worked fine but took awhile.

Updating my iPad wasn't so straight forward. I had to remove more than half the apps before there was enough room to download the update. Otherwise, it went okay too.

Happy to say: No problems with either my iPhone 5 or iPad Air. toothgrin.gif

Bruce, I made the reference to my name a link to the thread that notes those cautions. I promise I didn't make any other changes! But thanks for your credit card numbers and checking info. thumbup.gif

To heck with Apple after 16 hours all I got was an error message. Thank god I was using Itunes and not wifi. Their stupid servers wont even let you resume where you left off.

Applied available updates to apps.
Backed up.
And applied IOS 8 via iTunes.

Only one problem, that I'm aware of.. App called Flyby, for tracking satellites, does not have tracking info available. I can live with this for now.

Full update to about 12-15 minutes total.

Seems as if my problem was Bit Defender antivirus. After I turned it off my download time went from 50 hrs. to 15 min.

What is "antivirus"? I thought you were using a Mac! eek2.gif wink.gif

Seriously, I've not found anything that has ever found a virus, even a PC one, on any Mac. They are somewhat of a "big hammer" at any rate; they often cause more problems than they solve, at least on a Mac running the latest OS. They almost all depend on libraries of known malware/virus codes. But as soon as they are updated (a new virus is detected and announced), the hackers change the coding enough to bypass the 'detector'. Of course, they 'detector' is still useful for watching for files that may come in an email that you forward to another windows user who doesn't use any antivirus s/w. I suppose that group will never cover all windows users. rolleyes.gif

I think most people eventually find they should be turned off when making downloads from trusted sites. I still always end up returning to ClamXav and run it on start up. dntknw.gif

Of course, even Mr. Tessler reported extremely long download and install times on the first day. Too many trying to access the code at the same time. Secondly, the "Installer" only installs itself. The real traffic occurs when the Installer starts downloading the actual OS, a much larger file. wink.gif

Glad to hear things finally went smoothly and at a reasonable speed! clap.gif

Have you discovered any "must-have" features? Have you tried "QuickType"?

Three "must read" <articles about iOS 8>, especially if you're using Mavericks. Read before you install. salute.gif

9/24: A new OS sometimes includes new features that are turned ON by default. Apparently, one of them is "Hand Off" in iOS 8. In an effort to stop battery usage, you can turn that feature off, as well as BlueTooth and even WiFi. At least it's fairly easy and fast to use the 'swipe-up-from-the-bottom-of-the-screen' method to access those switches. wink.gif
(Is there a formal name for: "swipe-up-from-the-bottom-of-the-screen" SUftBotS eek2.gif Fortunately, there is no 'swiping' involved to close that control panel, just tap on any other part of the screen...)

I am waiting for a while. Read that there are a few issues.
My grandson got a 'pre-release' and likes it, had it for a while.

DO NOT UPGRADE TO iOS 8.0.1. It's no longer available, anyway. If you made the upgrade and are having cellular or Touch ID problems, Apple has published how to downgrade until they "fix the fix".

It downloaded itself onto my iPad mini and is waiting for me to install it. I don't suppose Apple will now un-download it for me?

If you never installed it, just don't. I assume you mean you down loaded it to iTunes? I'm not that familiar with these updates but I'd think downloading to an iDevice would automatically install it. Even if it did get installed, I doubt you make many calls on the iPad and I don't think any of them have that fingerprint reader thingy. Stick with WiFi if the machine is actually running 8.0.1 and you may never see a problem. Of course, if you made a backup to iTunes before upgrading, the Apple document explains how to downgrade.

Might be handy and reassuring to tap Settings->General->About and check the Version info... wink.gif

8.02 takes about 5-8 minutes to install on iPad via wi-fi.  Never had access to 8.01 didn't show up in system update.  8.02 showed up this evening.

Disturbingly, it downloaded itself and was patiently waiting for me to install it, but I was able to delete it as in that link I added. Now I'm waiting to see if 8.0.2 explodes on anyone before I add it.

I finally upgraded to iOS 8 today on my iPad. Went there on my iPhone Saturday. clap.gif

I have just finished getting the 8.0.2 update on the iPad. What I have seen in the iDevices is somewhat disturbing. Not that the upgrade/update is causing any problems (this time around rolleyes.gif ), what bothers me is what the user sees and what Apple does automatically.

On the iPad (have not looked on the iPhone, yet), going to the Software Update page (even without a "1" badge on the Settings icon) shows that 8.0.2 is available in one area and a "Downloading..." label appears below all the other text. At first, I thought it was actually "Installing" the update! After all, both words end with "ing"! doh.gif wallbash.gif Having nerves of steel (and a brain to match) I didn't do anything drastic, no one here today, so screaming would have been in vain! Within mere minutes, I realized that there was no "installing" happening... at least not yet. Finally, the "Downloading" text changed to "Install now". I'm still not sure what was actually 'downloaded'. One would think that an 'installer' app probably, and by the time it took to download, it was huge! More likely, the actual installer and the update was downloaded.

If everything was downloaded at once, I think we are putting a lot of faith in the Internet connection as well as the battery condition of the iDevice. I'm sure Apple's servers can easily check on a download completion accurately... "Nothing can go wrong... nothing...". And most users know to plug in a device before a long duration process is started. Unfortunately, "most" can be a long way from "all".

I realize screen space is tight, especially on older iPhones, but I see no reason for not placing more detailed messages about what is going on and why.

On my iPhone, this downloading was all hidden since it happened well after I installed the upgrade and before I looked at Software Update again. And it does show the "1" badge on the Settings icon.

Maybe I'm just getting old and senile... plenty of people have noticed one of those attributes! blush-anim-cl.gif I won't say which one but it happens without them knowing my birthdate! rant.gif

What really makes me mad is that even though I have automatic downloads OFF for updates, my iPad tried to update to iOS 8 by downloading the update! At home, this isn't so much of an issue, but I wasn't at home, I was at a friend's cabin in the woods and his wifi network is set up to use a 6GB/mo cell account. Simply turning my iPad on to get my email (my phone didn't work there - only one provider does work up there) provoked yet another attempt to download and it was chewing through a GB of data just by being turned on for a few minutes. We were totally mystified as to why this was happening at the time and it wasn't until I got home that I realized WHAT had done it. I still don't know WHY, as I checked and sure enough, all automatic downloads/syncing that might use data are OFF.

One of the new features of iOS 8 is the ability to reply to a Message without actually opening the app. Sounded like a good thing. This morning, I got a message from SWMBO. She is in DC for a week of DAR work. I decided it would be nice to make a quick reply while my coffee was warming in the microwave.

All you have to do is tap the "Reply" button and the entry box pops up along with the keyboard. Unfortunately, I didn't type fast enough. Notification Center popped up a preview of an email that had just arrived. That covered the Message entry box! I still had the keyboard showing and I could still type, but I couldn't see the reply!

I tried tapping, swiping, doiuble-tapping the Home button, and a little cursing but nothing would get rid of the email notification or hide the keyboard. I finally just shut the iPhone down. There is probably a simple solution for this type of event, I'm just too simple to figure it out. I'll do a bit of searching but I'm not sure it's worth a lot of effort. I'll just avoid the urge to make immediate replies... some of what we call 'life' really can wait...

I dont have room for this one yet, I have to delete a ton of pictures off my iPhone and free up space first. Will put the best pictures into iPhoto today, and then start sorting and saving them, and of course deleting the dupes.

I deleted all my email, but still for some whacky reason, have 6.2GB of it on the poor phone? Restarted the phone and got it down to about 3 GB. Cant figure out how to delete the rest, as I went thru and deleted all sent, received, and anything else I could get my hands on.

Artlcle in the paper today warning people about iCloud, I haven't bothered with it anyway, as I have a multitude of ext hard drives for all my pictures and artwork.
And plenty of stuff on the web, which as you say, is pretty much the cloud anyway.

Same here. This update suddenly downloaded (while we were at the clinic, so on their wifi no less), and now Sneakers is constantly bombarded with "upgrade to install" type messages. This kind of stuff is turning him off to his iPad. sad.gif

I'm still leery of installing this upgrade.

Have you checked/searched Bing/Google/Apple Support Forums for info on the Pages problem? I think my first choice for Apple S/W problems is still the Support Forms, that's where there will probably be a whole forum just for Pages.

I think there is some confusion about what is being "downloaded". The "automatic download" was nothing more than the Installer for the Updater. It was not the much, much larger and time consuming Updater. In order to get the Updater, you were still required to tap the Install button. At that point the actual Update started to download and the Installer first verified the download was correct/complete and then the update proceeded.

That doesn't explain why my iPad was chewing through 1GB of data in in mere minutes. My friend has monitoring software - after we became aware that there was a problem, he monitored in real time while I checked my email on my iPad. NO way checking 3 email accounts was causing that! (I do that all the time on my phone and my data usage is very minimal). We couldn't figure it out at the time - it wasn't until I got home that it became apparent. I had every other app turned off, and don't have many that use much data; they're all the same pretty much as I have on my iPhone.

The new iOS has allowed my favorite password manager to work more like it does on the Desktop! clap.gif Previously, if I wanted/needed to use 1Password in iOS, I had to decide to do some Copy & Paste dancing or use the somewhat less powerful browser built into 1Password. This problems was caused by Apple's policy to "protect" us by not allowing one app from communicating with another in iOS 7 and earlier.

Apple has finally created a method for inter-app communications and Agile has taken advantage of it by providing (a free upgrade) 1Password 5 for the new iOS! To save my ramblings, here is a link that describes these great improvements to 1PW at <TidBITS>.

I was reading this morning that the new iOS has a new kind of encryption built in, and it protects privacy a lot better. But will be difficult for law enforcement people to access info on law breakers phones.

Some good some bad, always 2 sides to new technology.

"difficult for law enforcement people to access" should read "nearly impossible... wink.gif Nor will Apple be able to read it, either.

Seems that every minute, it becomes more difficult or like you say, impossible, for law enforcement people to do their jobs.
Even around here in our little quiet village, our bank was robbed, and not solved. For some crazy reason, the FBI was involved and thus, the local video from the bank was NOT released!
Most of us are pretty sure we know down to 2 or 3 local perps, who did it. But not being able to view the videos, none of us can help.
The hardware store video was very distant, but oh, that guy sure looks familiar, the bank video would seal it for sure.

I would think that in case of something really serious, or threatening, like terrorist activity, that a confiscated cell phone info should be accessable.
Scary.

I assume that the bank is covered by the FDIC? The key word there, and the reason for the FBI, is 'Federal'. It's the "F" word in both those agencies. whistling.gif

Phone call tracing has nothing to do with iOS or iPhones. That technology uses the phone company. As far as I know, Apple hasn't entered that business. wink.gif False reporting has probably even been done with smoke signals or drums in the jungle. eek2.gif

Guess what I meant was when they confiscate a phone during a crime, cannot the perp erase or disable the phone right then and there? As there would be probably a lot of incriminating info on the phone? Texts, emails, address book stuff, recent calls?
Title: IOS 8
Post by: Xairbusdriver on October 15, 2014, 04:17:06 PM
You can erase/disable your iPhone, any time you want, even from your computer. Erasing has always been available, you could even Restore it to delete just the incriminating evidence if you do your backups with that in mind. Frankly, most hoodlums are not that intelligent, IMHO. Disabling has been around since (and maybe before iOS 7).
