Title: Windows 10 will run on the same machine as Vista!

Buried in the details of Microsoft's technical preview for Windows 10 (look for our own discussion in short order), is a bit of a footnote concerning the operating system's requirements. I say footnote because this news -- that Windows 10 will have exactly the same requirements as Windows 8.1, which had the same requirements as Windows 8, which stuck to Windows 7, which was the same as Windows Vista -- is something we take for granted these days.

Back in the day you could get a Windows computer with Vista installed and it would run like a pig in deep mud; the same system could apparently be burdened with Windows 10 when it makes it out the gate;
and will probably run like a pig in deeper and more viscous mud!  I'm assuming that Microsoft will be giving this upgrade away! laugh.gif

So what happened to Windows 9?

Inquiring minds want to know. biggrin.gif

I bet Microsoft is just trying to keep up with the Joneses...Apple has OS X, after all. wink.gif (and the author of the linked article below discusses this possibility too)

I agree with you Paddy, the Apple has been at "Ten" for 14+years! OTOH doesn't the "X 10" mean 'twenty'... wallbash.gif If so, Windows is still 10 years behind!

Sounds like Windows 10 is just a change in the graphic. But if the ads/PR can be true, there is a lot more changes; much more like iOS than OS X. dntknw.gif We'll see, or touch to see. Not sure M$ understands "free"! wink.gif

More about this at InfoWorld:

QUOTE
This week's Windows Technology Preview event managed to lift the hopes of even the Windows-wary. But like the iconic image of a steam blast lifting Marilyn Monroe's skirt, once the initial excitement died down, the realization set in: Little was actually revealed.

Microsoft divulged Window's new name -- a surprise to all except perhaps InfoWorld's Pete Babb, who "predicted" the Windows 9 skip in an April Fools' gag last year -- but virtually every other feature of note had already been leaked.

Microsoft promised, to paraphrase corporate VP Joe Belfiore, Windows 10 will be like a Tesla to Windows 7's first-generation Prius. (Belfiore was probably not thinking of Tesla's overheating issues when he coined that analogy.) But after the frisson of excitement at Microsoft's big reveal and jokes about "Windows 7 8 (ate) 9" subsided, the question was, will Windows 10 warrant that jump?

Make or break time for Microsoft was mentioned! Thinking.gif   Maybe they'll stick with game machines!

Another link at InfoWorld says Apple is due to release 10.10 (10 squared) or Yosemite on the 21 of October:

Maybe because they didn't want people to think that Windows 9 was Windows Nein!  whistling.gif

I think we have a winner! At least for those with a minimal understanding of certain Teutonic languages... yes.gif OTOH, I like "7 8 9"! Programmers understand numbers better than wurdz! tongue.gif
