Title: Any Gmail users?
Post by: gunug on October 13, 2014, 01:19:02 PM
We are just beginning to embark on a forced march into the world of Chrome OS and I now own multiple Gmail accounts including one that's taking the place of my "official" work email.  I was reading
a cry for help over at Slashdot from a Gmail user who was being buried with SPAM:

QUOTE
I'd think with all the Oompa Loompas at the Chocolate Factory that they could do a better job rejecting the obvious spam emails.
If they did it would make checking for the occasional false positives in my spam folder a teeny bit easier.

None of my Gmail accounts "seem" to be burdened with SPAM yet but it's early days yet; anyone here having this trouble with Gmail?

Just like all the responders to the OP in the Slashdot thread, I get next to no spam on my Gmail inbox. There is some spam - but it all ends up in the spam folder, which I go and check in the webmail version of Gmail once in a blue moon; I don't have the spam folder showing in Mail. As far as I can tell, the Gmail filters work pretty well. Occasionally something gets misidentified as spam, but it's never been anything important.

So, panic not - at least about that. There are plenty of other reasons not to like Google/Gmail these days, but spam filtering isn't one of them.

Paddy - Did you have to tip the "Oompa Loompas" or at least make them some chocolate chip cookies to get this good service?   whistling.gif

My experience pretty much mirrors Paddy's. Once I identify something as spam, it never comes back. Google is also very good about helping me unsub from junk. Some places where I've shopped auto add you to their mailing list, others ask. I then click on the unsub button ONCE. If that doesn't work, I mark it spam the next time and Google often says, "Would you like us to help you unsub?" I click yes and never hear from these folks again.

I will say that I have a few things that wind up as spam that aren't, and I keep marking them not spam, but they still are marked spam by Google. I know exactly why, and it irks me, but I live with it.

Nope. Like Kimmer, it just works. I really don't know (and neither do most of the respondents on that thread you posted) what the OP's problem is. As I noted, I suspect the problem is in front of the screen, not behind it. wink.gif

Thanks for the input; I guess I have to get used to it anyway.  Probably the Chrome Browser is more of a problem than GMAIL anyway!

I suppose you read this as you posted a link to the Ars story on Yosemite. Just reading it now, may take me through to tomorrow as I read so slowly! blush-anim-cl.gif But this comment reminded me of this thread about gMail:
QUOTE
Mail got a bit of a black eye in Mavericks thanks to some bugs that specifically affected Gmail users. A couple of patches eventually set things (mostly) straight, but the basic mismatch between the organizing principle of Gmail (each message may have multiple labels) and Apple Mail (each message resides in a single folder) remains a source of UI friction.
Since I don't use gMail, I have no solutions for you. blush2.gif

G-Mail works.....as secondary address, I still use my own encrypted account for secure transactions.
As of late, Yahoo has been giving users some trouble. I never cared for them.

I think everything is getting tons more spam now. My G-mail isnt all that bad, but one of my old original accounts from my web site, got bombarded.

I have it disabled on my iPhone, and the spam is directed to my junk folders here on the Mac. So its easily ignored. But its still annoying to have to trash it several times a day.
I REALLY dont NEED or want a private jet! Or a walk in bathtub.

Did you ever remove your plain text email addy on your web site(s)? Until you do, web crawler/bots will keep finding it.

The one I dont have on my site is the one getting spammed now. But Ive disabled it on the iPhone. And have made another one with one different letter. I will leave this old one up for a little longer. Then I will get rid of it around Christmas time.
