Title: Mama Moose Movin' On
Post by: MamaMoose on July 19, 2003, 12:57:50 AM
Well the die is cast and wife and I bought a house in Beaverton OR. Hope to move up after selling Dublin house by early September.

First, I have to figure out what ISP I should use since Pac Bell (an excellent system) doesn't exist in Oregon. Anyone have any experience with DSL or cable high speed in that area?

Second, are ther any TSers in that area?

Third, I wonder if there are any Mac specialists up there beside CompUSA  verysad.gif   upset.gif ?

So I may be out of touch for a week or so but I will still be active (?) in TS. As the song goes:

I'm a TSer born,
I am a TSer bred,
and when I die I am a TSer dead!

(with apologies to Brown University and its songs)

Tom, Qwest is the phone Co. in that area and they have the DSL. I am not sure who handles the Cable net in Beaverton, there are several in the NW Oregon area.  I am in the Salem area but far enough out that I cannot get BB.

Hi MamaMoose...

Years ago, when I used to travel that part of the US (Washington/Oregon) former Californians used to be refered to as "transplants"... biggrin.gif
Wonder if that's still the case...or have the "transplants" out-numbered the locals by now. wink.gif

Good luck with the move.

MM: Are you suuure you don't want think twice about this venture?

When you move to Orygun, the SF Bay will no longer be anchored, so to speak - - East and West - - by the most senior of the TS Senior Caucus. What'll I do? What'll I do? How will TS on the cusp of Silicon Valley continue to trod the straight and narrow without such quidance? verysad.gif

At least I hope you work your consulting/travel schedule in such a way to join the TS Luncheon at MacWorld.

Mayo lives in Oregon. Send him a PM and maybe you guys can get together, somehwere in the middle of the rainforest.

Good luck, and the very best to you and Mary Jo.

Tom, Comcast is the cable provider in Beaverton:

http://www.comcast.com/LocalHomePage/defau...esult&Zip=97005

Lucky you! After 6 years here in MA, I still miss Corvallis (where we spent 1991-1997). I have several friends in both Corvallis and in Portland, and one of my husband's former OSU colleagues works at Intel.

There also seem to be a number of Mac resellers in the area, in addition to the one already noted. Here's one with several locations:

http://www.thecomputerstore.com/ (you can click on their "old web site" for more info) - they even have a store in Corvallis, which wasn't there when we were there. Of course, Richard got the University educational discount, so we either bought stuff through OSU or from catalogues.

Good luck with the move...and since you're moving from CA, you'll no doubt hear a few of these:

One time there were three men sitting around a campfire. One was from Texas, and was drinking tequila. One was from California, and was drinking wine. One was from Oregon, and was drinking beer ("Henry's" - the common beer in Oregon). Suddenly the Texan threw his bottle of tequila into the air and shot it with his pistol.
"Why did you do that?" asked the others.
"Because where I come from we have lots more tequila," he replied.
Then the Californian threw his bottle of wine into the air and shot it with his pistol.
"Why did you do that?" asked the others.
"Because where I come from we have lots more wine," he replied.
Then the Oregonian threw his bottle of beer into the air and shot the Californian with his pistol.
"Why did you do that?" asked the Texan.
"Because where I come from we have lots more Californians, but I can get five cents for the bottle."

And...

Q: How many Californians does it take to change a lightbulb?
A: Six. One to turn the bulb, one for support, and four to relate to the experience.

Q: How many Oregonians does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
A: Five. One to change the bulb and four more to chase off the Californians who have come up to relate to the experience.

biggrin.gif

But don't worry - well over half my friends in Corvallis were transplanted Californians...and even they joke about it. Oregon (and more specifically, the higher-growth areas like the Willamette Valley) has a high number of "immigrants" from other states and other countries. If you can stand the gray & wet (but mild & very green) winters, it's a wonderful, friendly, laid back sort of place to live. I've cut the grass in December, while admiring the last rose or two, and enjoyed Camellias blooming at the end of January...not something we ever get to do here in MA!

Good luck with your move!

Spent some time up that way, good friends, nice country.
Might I suggest you tell them your from anywhere but California. wink.gif
Iowa or Kansas for example, is a nice place to be from when migrating to the Northwest.
For a DSL or cable link try this http://www.earthlink.net/home/broadband/ it will at least let you know if they have DSL. If they say yes, then other companies in the area should have access on the same shared lines.

Luck to ya!
Oh and Welcome to Ecotopia! B)

Ms. Moose, I do believe that your are going to love Portland.  I am in southern Oregon but I visit Portland every chance I get...  Portland reminds me of San Francisco circa 1976.  LOTS going on, a vibrant alternative scene in Southeast, MUSICMUSICMUSIC, and public transit that will make your jaw drop.  I believe that MAX reaches Beaverton, so you will never have to drive your car again...  Public transportation is free in a large area of central Portland.

Have you died and gone to East Bay Traffic Heaven?  Me thinks that you have...  Of course, anybody who commutes north into Portland by car on I-5 and who is from the Bay Area will feel Right At Home.

Off the top of my head...keep in mind I tend to drive in the left-hand lane but here are some quickie favs:

The Cup and Saucer Cafe on SE Hawthorne. A posted "No-Cell (phone) Zone."  Homiest breakfast place in Portland if you feel comfortable around Gens. X, Y and Z.  So many piercings that an airport metal detector would go crazy in the place.  There can be a bit of wait on weekends around the normal breakfast time of 10-11am.  Normal for the SE Portland crowd, anyway...If I lived in SE I would probably eat breakfast there every morning.  Try the Lucky Scramble!

The Barley Mill Inn, also on SE Hawthorne but closer to the river.  One of the McMinnimen (sp?) chain of brewpubs/pubs, it is a Grateful Dead "theme" pub, I kid you not!  How can than NOT appeal to someone from the Bay Area?  We stumbled upon it one night after dinner.  It is tastefully done, serves what looks like great pub fare (haven't eaten there yet...), and with that ineffable comfort vibe that I have experienced at only a few select pubs in the states and elsewhere.  Check out the upstairs atrium.  And no, they don't play the Dead's music exclusively, in case that might drive you out of your skull. (I know that there are a few people out there that didn't "get" the Dead, those poor, lost souls...)

I gotta get going, but I will get back with some other picks.

In the meantime, don't let anyone discourage you by telling you how much it rains in Portland.  That is just a slanderous myth perpetrated by California real estate interests and the California Chamber of Commerce.

OKAY, it DOES rain a little in Portland, but only for two weeks in January.  On the bright side, a recent study at Joe Bob Jones University in Tuscaloosa found that Portlanders have sex 76% more often than the rest of the U.S., and it is directly attributable to the fact that Portlanders spend more time indoors.  Plus the researchers noted that the sex is better than in California, so tell that to any California detractors that try to rain on your parade!

Since TS is purported to be a family venue, I won't go into further detail in this area.  You will just have to take my word for it.

Of course, being a transplanted Californian myself I tell most current Californians that Oregon just sucks, whine "WHYOHWHYDIDIEVERMOVEFROMCALIFORNIA?" and leave it at that.  Keep in mind that I didn't move here with a a pile of cash from selling my home, and that I have no inclination whatsoever to do to Oregon what happened to California, which is what unfortunately seems to occur after folks move here from Down South.

Recent California transplant speaking to her husband:  "Honey, isn't Oregon a beautiful state?  I am sooo glad that we moved here!  All these trees and open space!  Now let's develop some land and make a ton of money!!!"

Oh, and for Macs I think that The Computer Store, a small Oregon chain, is one to check out.  I got my 7300 from the Eugene store in '97, ordered it by phone and picked it up a few days later. I think  there may be a store in Beaverton.

May I tell you how envious I am? Good, because I am GREEN with envy!  biggrin.gif

Sneakers and I have long wanted to live near the coast where you can breath in the summer and not fry your lungs from heat and smog. We visited Oregon a few times and liked it. These past few months -- actually almost a year now -- we have talked about moving to Oregon.

Sneakers is presently doing his homework on the net, checking weather, taxes, weather, restaurants, weather, population, weather, housing costs, weather, movie theaters, weather, transportation, weather, medical availability, and weather.

We are presently just up the road from you and it would have been nice to have met before you moved ... but maybe we will wind up near you in Oregon and meet at the local coffee shop. smile.gif

Have fun packing and moving.

Good luck in your move to Oregon....I lived in Central Oregon for a year and really miss the northwest. I came in the back door though, from AZ, but I'd moved from CA to AZ....The first thing I did after moving in was go to the DMV to get those "foreign" plates off my car....trish

Well, welcome.gif to "my" corner of the world, MM, but prepare yourself. . .Has anybody mentioned the "beauty" of the ice storms?   laugh.gif Don't worry though, you probably won't have to deal with them more than 2 or 3 times a year.  And get ready to spend some time under a sun lamp, to keep the "rain wrinkles" from getting too bad! Other than those 2 drawbacks, you're gonna love it!

Mama, I remembered a couple of other Portland Goodies...

Kornblatt's on NW 23rd is a New York Jewish deli that was mysteriously transported to Portland by UFO back in the '60s.  Rather than going to the trouble and expense of getting everything back to the Big Apple, Kornblatt's just stayed put, which is a good thing for all of us.

I swear that some of the wait people must commute everyday from the Brooklyn to Kornblatt's.  One time I asked a waiter for advice about some Portland attractions, so he called for the patrons' attention and solcited suggestions from the locals.  That sort of thing never happens in a Dennys.

On a nice day the small tables on the sidewalk are great for people-watching, but since the sidewalks are narrow you are really in the midst of the street life...

NW 23rd is part Sausalito, part Carmel, part any other trendy town you can think of, for better or worse.  Fortunately, there is still enough diversity and characters to give the street life. How long that lasts is anybody's guess, as real estate continues to go up in Northwest.  So Get It While You Can.  I mean the experience, not real estate.

Also on NW 23rd is a GREAT store called Music Millenium http://www.musicmillennium.com/  Zillions of recordings (maybe every box set every released...) and the place sponsors free shows by musicians right in the store.  A lot of folks putting on concerts in Portland stop by at MM.  The best (and basically only) seats are those in the little "living room" right in front of the stage, which is maybe a foot high.
