Title: Hawaii Trip
Post by: Bruce_F on July 22, 2003, 03:07:57 PM
I started out with 58 photos but ended up with 28. That is partly due to taking multiple shots of the same subject and stitching them together to make on larger one.

I compressed these shots way down in size, so I hope those of you with 56k connections will have no trouble with the images loading. There are two panos that I put links to which are larger files. If you have a fast connection or if you don't mind waiting, the panos are really pretty!

Let me know if you have any trouble viewing my Hawaii Photos!

Bruce.
The url I posted above to your pam picture. (((Terrific Picture btw)))
Well in Camino it shows an error loading.
But in Safari 1.0. loaded the 638Ks with no problem.
No problem with IE either.

Checked Camino prefs.?.
Has to be Camino!
Here's what I get using Camino. Cashe cleared or not.

Wonder if it's just at my end (or my Camino) or what?

No matter. Great Pictures Bruce! smile.gif

Bill,

That's weird about Camino. I got the same error at home using Mozilla while testing the gallery. After it was uploaded to my web site, Mozilla views it okay!

Beats me! huh.gif

Al,

That rainbow is what petroleum based fuel does when it surfaces on water. Did you see the caption?

Thanks! Haleakala would be a wonderful place to visit again! After my ride that day, I met a woman who works up on top of the mountain in one of the buildings. She's been working there for Boeing Co. for four years. I didn't ask her to explain what she does, but she mentioned something about atmospheric testing.

There's an outside chance that some among our "constituency" may not know about Haleakala. So tell us, Bruce, just what were you doing up there with that hat and jacket on . . . weren't you in Hawaii, ferhevensakes? unsure.gif

Really enjoyed the Haunama Bay pics, too. B)

Thanks, RHP, I guess that I figured the photo captions would explain enough.

For the benefit of those who are curious, there is a very good reason to visit Haleakala if you're ever to vacation on Maui.

Every day, hundreds of people get up at around 2:30 - 3:00 AM to make the trip up to the summit of Haleakala. Why? To be there at the 10,000 ft. elevation to watch the sunrise! My attempt at showing the moment on my picture gallery doesn't even come close to what we actually experienced.

We arrived at the summit at about 4:15 AM. The temperature was close to freezing at that altitude. The wind chill factor makes up the difference. With sustained winds ranging between 30 - 40 mph, my hands got numb from the cold within a few minutes. It was difficult to work my camera! However, the experience was well worth the discomfort that we endured for maybe an hour.

For a few, out of the hundreds of people who were there, the experience lives on!

After sunrise, about 6 to 8 vans full of people got ready for the next adventure. We brought bicycles with us to the mountain top!

My group, the only group that morning, was the "freestyle" group. Most of the cyclists that venture to Haleakala are in a tour group all the way back to bike shop. You ride as fast as the slowest one in your group.

The freestyle group had no such restrictions. We were allowed to take off down the mountain at whatever pace we wanted to go. We could go anywhere we wanted along the way, as long as we returned by 4:00 PM.

At first, I was going to take my time and take little side trips along the route. That morning, I changed my mind and decided to just head down to the valley below.

The ride back down is about 26 miles, but it's all down hill! Without any effort, other than braking on the hairpin corners, I was down the mountain in about an hour. I did take one side trip by accident. I missed my turn. blush-anim-cl.gif I went about 8 miles out of my way and I had to climb up hills to get back to the road I missed.

It was a good workout and I worked up a good appetite. After I turned in my bike and back pack, I went to a nearby restaurant and had the best fish burger I've had in a long time! I also treated myself to a Mai Tai!  tongue.gif

Thanks for asking Dick. Great picture, but as one of the 'constituency outsiders' it didn't mean too much to me. Some of those pix remind of the Greek island of Kefalonia where we have just spent two weeks. When I get an hour or two I'll post some of my pix and give you a link.

Hey Bruce,

No, sorry, I guess I missed the caption.  But, now that you told me what that was, I won't think it was some kind of mystical Hawaiian Demigod or something! eek2.gif
