Title: Trying to install OSX
Post by: Petalbear on July 24, 2003, 04:41:38 PM
Hello lovely people,

I'm trying to install OSX onto my iBook (funny shaped one) and not having much luck sad.gif . I'm running OS9.2.2, updated the Firmwire, my CD drive is a bit dodgy though. I click on install and the window comes up to restart so it can start installing but then an error message appears saying 'Startup disk was unable to select the install CD as the startup disk (-2)'. Have I got a faulty CD drive? The CD shows up on the desktop ok. When I select the OSX Disk to start up from it doesn't, just automatically opens from Mac HD. I've plugged in an external Firewire CD drive and can start up from it but then it throws up the dos like page asking for either 'mac-boot' or 'shut-down'. I typed in mac-boot then the screen went black and white and then coloured, all in straight lines, then nothing. It was like some major disk error thing! I can restart fine though if I unplug the firewire. Can anybody help?  biggrin.gif

Did you start up with the C key held down?

Is it for sure an OS Install and not just an Update CD? smile.gif

How much room do you have on the Drive?

Have you tried cleaning the CD-ROM?

CD Cleaners are pretty cheap.

By the way. That would be a "Clamshell" iBook. smile.gif

Is your Hard Drive formatted to Mac OS Standard (HFS) Format? smile.gif

Jaguar needs HFS+ Extended Format.

" Although Mac OS X recognizes Mac OS Standard (HFS) format volumes, Mac OS X cannot be installed on a Mac OS Standard (HFS)-formatted volume."

Thanks for all your help  smile.gif

It's running 192 MB RAM with a PowerPC G3 Processor, 466MHz. I haven't got a clue about the Formatting, how would I find out? It's definitely an install CD, not an update. And I've got over 7 gigs free on the HD. The disk drive has been cleaned, I think it's this that's the problem because when I go to the startup disk control panel I can't select the CD if it's in my computer, I can if it's in the Firewire drive. It's a bit odd isn't it?Is there any way of telling my iBook that I want the external CD drive to be the default one? I've recently done a completely clean install of OS 9 in the hope it would resolve this but it hasn't.
Thanks for all your help, I think I'm slowly going mad...  wallbash.gif

Click once on your Hard drive Icon and choose Get Info from the Finder Menu. smile.gif

That should tell you if it's "Standard" or "Extended".

Apple System profile probably would also.

Please don't go mad. It's only Computer problems.

There are worse things. smile.gif

Any possibility that the internal CD drive is improperly set as slave?

cannot recognize CD

Check this out also.

Is the install CD a "generic" or could it possibly be for a particular model computer?

Thank you all SO much for your help  biggrin.gif

My HD is extended, so that's good, and the CD drive ID is 0 which is good too.

The disk I have is a copy from a reputable source... It's generic so should work on most Macs.

I'm now going to read all the Mac OS X stuff from the links and try again, wish me luck and thanks once again, I'll keep you posted.

My computer is not going to get the better of me!

Um...Petalbear, do you mean that it's a full retail version or is this a CDR that someone burned? Because if it's the latter, that's the problem. You can't copy OS X install disks...even to have as a backup copy. It doesn't work. They may look ok, but they won't boot your machine or install OS X.

Just wondered - you may have meant it the other way and I'm grabbing at straws here. tongue.gif

Oh God...  sad.gif

That must be the problem, you're a genius Paddy. What a pain, guess I need to use the original.

Still doesn't explain the problems with my CD Drive though. I can never use it as the startup disk. Might have to take it in to get the tray looked at.
