What's the easiest way to share files between the 2 computers?
I'm an ignoramous when it comes to File sharing.

However, there are a couple of other options, which give you much more access to the files on your OS X computer - including using the URL of the other computer with "afp://192.168.0.xxx" in your browser - it will connect, ask you for your password - which on the OS 9 computer you've set in Users and Groups. If you are logging into the OS X computer from the OS 9 computer using this technique, simply use your administrative OS X password and voila - you'll have access to EVERYTHING on your OS X computer, not just the Shared or Public folders.
Between my OS X computers I use FTP (Transmit), since I have all the settings for both computers already set in the menu and it's fast. It takes me directly to the User folder - which is fine, since I'm not going to be messing around with applications etc. remotely. For some reason or other I can't get it to work with the OS 9 Mac - it refuses the connection, even though I've got the TCP/IP option checked in filesharing on OS 9. However, the afp:// method is equally effective, and gives you access to all drives, partitions and files (you just have to remember the IP addys for all your computers - which since you have only two on the network shouldn't be too hard...I've got 6 right now including 2 PC's and a print server with it's own IP, and I keep getting mixed up!!!)
Hope this helps...If I've left anything out, ask away! There are a lot of fiddly bits to filesharing...especially in OS 9 - leave one of them out and nothing happens.
Edit - my router uses 192.168.0.xxx - other routers use 192.168.1.xxx as the IP addresses handed out by DHCP. Check your IP's before you start!

When I try to connect to the OS9 computer from the OS X computer I get a box that says "select the volumes you want to mount" but there's no volumes to pick from.

A heads up. You probably know all this, but just in case -
I notice that you are using file sharing on Macintoshes that are connected to the Internet via cable modem.
As you are probably aware, this can risk decreasing your Internet security significantly.
The first thing that people are generally advised in regard to cable modem internet security on the Macintosh is to turn off file sharing.
Practical ramifications:
On getting cable, the first thing that a friend did was explore his file sharing possibilities.
To his surprise, he found that he was sharing his cable connection with 'most everyone in the neighborhood on a Macintosh on one big virtual network.
He found that he could see the desktops of a bunch of other people in his neighborhood who were also on Macs with file sharing turned on.
"Brian's hard drive" "Jill's hard drive." All beaconed his curiosity.
Who was Brian?
Was was Jill? Really?
Hmmmm . . .
I suppose that he could have even used their shared printers if he wanted to . . .
If you are going to do this, you may wish to turn off file sharing while on cable. Particularly if you are one of those rare computer users who ever have anything on their desktop that they would prefer to keep private.
When you set up file sharing, it may be prudent to use good passwords. That means a string of six or eight or more (depending on whom you read) random alpha-numeric-symbol characters. Not just "Garycat7" - that is very easy to break.
To reiterate: with file-sharing turned off, you will be much more secure on cable modem.

I am aware. I have a good password and I think i'll just turn on Filesharing on when i need to transfer files rather than having it on all the time.
shared printer.....that would be unusual to print something and have it print on Bettie's Mac down the block!

On the earlier issue - you need to select the drives/files that you want to share on the OS 9 computer, click on "Get Info" and then under "Sharing" designate who has privileges, and what they are. Make sure that the same people who have privileges are then included in your FileSharing control panel list of users (where you enter the name and the password). Of course, you can always make it easy on yourself and just use "Guest"...but that would leave you even more vulnerable to outside prying eyes!
Do you have a router though? Reason I ask - if you do, you are fairly secure, as most routers have built in firewalls. If you don't have one, I'd think seriously about getting one! They've gotten ridiculously cheap these days - like this D-Link (same as mine, but not wireless) from NewEgg - $31 after the rebate.

I have D-Link Router with a built-in Firewall.
I'll try what you suggested and see if it works.
I had both Pouge's book and Robin William's book out, read them and
then proceeded.
That window that opens is waiting for me to select what I want to share....That makes sense. I was trying to tell it....I want to share the other computer silly!

Reason I'm asking thought I saw that one going for $99.xx at either bestbuy or circuit city today. Didn't pay too much attention whether there was a rebate or not, just walked by it.

I got mine at on the day after Thanksgiving...I was one of those loonies lined up to pay at 7:00 AM (the darn line for the cash registers went right around the perimeter of the store...) - $59 after rebates, if I remember correctly. It's a good router - has much better range than my snow Airport base station, which is STILL sitting in the box under my desk awaiting an eBay auction. One of those things on the to-do list for this summer that just isn't going to happen, since I'm off to Newcastle, ON for the usual 3+ week "invade the grandparents cottage" routine at the end of the week. This summer has just flown by - as usual.
