Aside from all the other problems associated with switching from 9.2 to Jaguar, discovered Smart Panel no longer works with my scanner, Iview Media Pro works in classic (Boy, what a surprise to attach my camera and see Iphoto come up!), and now I installed and tried to run Disk Warrior 3 and it gets as far as Preview, with a screen which says it is scanning for disks - and just SITS there - nothing happens, have to force quit. Any answers for this? Anyone who wants to come here and hold my hand while I scream????

I just installed it today also. I foung the best way is to start up from the DW disk by holding down the option key. At the screen enter enter your admin password and click the arrow. When the drive options appear, click on the CD icon and then click the appropriate symbol. After a moment or two the DW application will appear and you can proceed from there.

Pendragon . . . where are you?

I had exactly (probably) the same problem, dakota, when I got my new DW3, but as has happened in the past, Harv and I had a little chat, I tried a few ideas, but I'll be da . . . err darned . . . if I can remember which one worked.

But one did, like a charm . . . Pismo, 10.2.6

I feel pretty foolish not remembering . . . Harv, help us out, here.

Whatever worked, ultimately, fixed the whole process so that DW now works like a vertiable charm. (It was simple, in retrospect!))

Don't be surprised, however, that it takes a while to do whatever are the hundreds of thousands of "tests" its process now entails. This is "not your Father's DiskWarrior!"

IAW gmann. I hate to ask, but can you tell us how you installed DW. I only say this because you can not run an installed DW on the same volume you are testing. Ergo, you must run DW from the CD or from a different volume. Also, disconnect all peripherals except the keyboard and mouse and then try running DW. Perhaps that will help.

If you are certain you installed it correctly (and then Repaired Permissions) and still can not select it to start up (as gmann suggested), I suggest giving Alsoft a call. I have only spoken with their tech people a few times, but found them most helpful.

My DW 3 runs over 4,000,000 tests1 Yes that's 4 million. It isn't bad though. It's a lot faster than DW2.1.1 on OSX.
BTW, Run DW until you get zero fragmentation on your Directory! After you run it, do a check again and see if it's fully optimized....if not run it again until it is! usually twice in most cases, Sometimes it's OK after the first run but not always. If the optimize button is grayed out after the first run just do the hardware check and then the optimize button should let you do it again.

P.S. If you are having problems with DW running from a drive, it may help to disable any virus programs you have running. Might be worth a try.

I'm up early (and hopefully "bright") on this beautiful morn in San Francisco and still trying to recall what it was that "worked". Just iChatted with Harv and he doesn't remember what the key to the solution was, either.

It'll probably come back at some strange moment.

I do remember that I did not try to install DW - - still haven't, but in simply attempting to use it from the disk, I first found that "C" just wouldn't work to effect a boot. Then, when I got it "chosen" as the Start-Up Drive (among those on my tri-partitioned HD) and rebooted all I got was a never-ending beachball. I attempted rebooting several times but no luck and . . .

WHOOPS . . . everything just clicked. B-I-N-G-O!

Here's what I now recall, with clarity.

It will sound even stranger here than it seemed "during" the experience.

Despite repeated efforts to get DW/CD to become the boot disk . . . . nada, zip. It took a removal of the CD module from its bay and a couple of firm, really firm, reseatings to geet everything to function properly.

What made that particularly strange is that I had been running a music CD w/o incident earlier, but DW simply wouldn't "ignite" until I reseated the whole drive module. It still seems quite curious, but that's what did it.

Now, inasmuch as I sense you're probably not doing this on a PB, this may not be the "solution" for you, dakota. But, AT LEAST, I FINALLY REMEMBERED the strange sequence of events that got my new DW up and running.

Why it wouldn't fire-up while a a bit of Beethoven did, is beyond me.

Harv I did not install DW, I run it from the CD. I do have two drives containing four partitions and could install I suppose, but I found that it is easier just to use the sartup with option button. That allows me to run DW on all four partitions in succession without taking up any HD space. In my previouse post I used the term install when I should

Good morning - all this activity while I was sleeping! Installation was simply dragging it to the utilities folder in Applications, as per instructions. I was not necessarily trying to run it to repair anything, just to see what it looked like at this point. And, after all, I did not have to try to test the startup drive - I have three other drives it could have looked at. However, it got to Preview, said it was scanning, and never moved from that point on.

Dakota, I have heard of cases where DW has taken hours and in a few cases, even days to run (the first time). Maybe when next you slumber you can give it another go.

I've never tried that 'option' method gmann with DW3.

The C key works for me but it does take a long time too kick in from by reading a gazzion threads on this,it's normal.

Since upgrading? to 10X I have never had the patience to hold the C key for 15 Min. A Mac tech at my local Mac outlet clued me into the option thing when I purchased the Silever, Feb. 02.
Incidentely I ran DW twice and still have the problem of the dissapearing dock. After running this unit for 1.5 yrs there was very little scatter of the directory. I rather feel that purchasing DW was a waste of $80 that could have been used elsewhere. IMO

I haven't installed DiskWarrior either. I run it from the CD with the C key. That option key thing is interesting....that's how I boot to my OS9.2.2 HDD. I wonder what would happen? I'll try it next time and see if I can goof it up.

When it dissapears the Dock preferences are frozen, clicky clicky, nada.
I have trashed preferences and removed recent downloads thinking conflicts, to no avail. Ran DW3 twice, nada, Virex, nada. I have tried Apple to see if a fresh DL of dock is available, nada. I am considering putting folders on my desk top conaining aliases of the apps that I use such as I did in 9.x and previous. I sure hate to go that route tho.

I use TransparentDock gmann.
Been sometime since I installed it, so not even going to try and recall how it installed. <gr>
Although I believe it put all of the docks originals off to the side and created its own.
Check out the link and see if there's a read me etc etc.

Was at a compusa today and to my surprise they had DiskWarrior 3 on the self for $99.
Didn't think they sent their products too retail stores.

Dakota, Glad to hear that all is right with the world and that your DW (and Norton) problems have been resolved. But in review of the above, I think the credit for first suggesting the solution, Repairing Permissions, goes to our own senior scholar and guru in residence RHP.

And at his age, the flattery goes a long way...
