Title: Safari 10.0
Post by: kimmer on September 21, 2016, 12:09:01 PM
Aacckk! This morning Apple offered me Safari 10.0 – security update, blah, blah. Okay, download and installed while I enjoyed my one and only cup of java. One major problem: all my previous prefs are vanished with a download, and the default font size is tiny, tiny, tiny. I have to keep hitting "⌘ +" on every page. I launched "preferences" from the main Safari menu and I’m not finding a place to set my default font. I know it's there, but now I'm a bit annoyed.

Anyhow, be aware.

Just "saw" this, myself. There is no longer a 'minimum font size' setting. wallbash.gif Try changing the Safari Prefs->Advanced->Page Zoom: to 115% (or higher). Unfortunately, this still has the font in the "Fast Reply" box smaller than what shows in a post...

BTW, "Zooming" the page won't make it load faster. rolleyes.gif Can't wait to find more "improvements".

You can send feedback to Apple here. I just submitted a comment, to the effect that I won't be upgrading to Safari 10 until this is fixed.

Well, isn't that just ducky.  dry.gif

Thanks, I changed that but it wasn't very satisfactory. I gmail, I find the section tabs to have small print, but I can now read the list of emails, and the emails themselves.  wallbash.gif

BTW, I won't be downloading Safari 10 to my laptop. That's already a tiny screen and I don't want to have to buy a magnifying glass in order to use the laptop.

Apple, I'm not 25! Give me back some control over all this!

This is an automated response from Apple.com. We have forwarded your message to the Senior Division Headquarters. As so as they get computers and desks to put them on, I'm sure they will be replying. In the meantime, please don't forget to take your meds!

Another less troublesome change: Extensions now have their ENable/DISable checkbox just to the left of their icon. ...just because they can? dntknw.gif Seems to use more space than having that in the same area as the "Uninstall" area. I suppose Apple deems it critical that someone might hit the "Uninstall" button instead of the DIS/EN-able box. rolleyes.gif wallbash.gif You just can't be too safe ...but you should can irritate users with pointless changes! yes.gif

It's not just the TS site that shows up in teeny-tiny text. My Schwab brokerage account is the same way. VERY hard on these old tired eyes.

I haven't upgraded to Safari 10 yet (although I may install it in one of my clones to play with it) but I wonder if the font size issue is addressable with   TinkerTool 6 for Sierra or   older versions for previous operating systems. TT has a Safari tab that allows one to set default fonts and sizes but I don't know if it works with Safari 10.

Any brave souls out there who want to try it?

Thanks for a reminder about TT. I'll try it immediately, if not sooner! scram.gif

Discovered that I actually have TT System 4. It was out-of-date, so I updated it. Unfortunately, I did not see any place to set a font size for Safari. Nor did the new version seem to recognize my previous registration. wallbash.gif

I also have a version of the simpler TT (V.4.9.5). I've attempted to set "Application" fonts to 16pt Helvetica. A restart of Safari is required. That app was also out-of-date. The new version requires Sierra!

I also found a TT System 5 version. It also requires Sierra!

I also ran a version of Cocktail. Set the Safari Standard and Fixed-width fonts to 18 pts. I'll Quit/Open Safari and see if I can "see" any changes. ...Possibly. Zoom was also changed back to 115% before I started post this, anyway.

I got other irons in the fire... will work on this later. rolleyes.gif

I was chatting with a techie friend at breakfast, and he said the font issue should disappear when we all upgrade to Sierra or MacOS or whatever they are calling it.  rolleyes.gif  Whoopee. Doesn't help me now.

I'm bumping into lots of little problems with this new version of Safari: pages that won't completely load, pages that don't function well at all, etc. I switched over to Chrome for my main browser and all those sites work just grand.

TT 5 is good for Mavericks, Yosemite and El Capitan (I know; I have it installed). You can get it here

A guy at another forum said he was not having any issues with font sizing in Safari and Sierra. Just have to deal with it until I upgrade, I guess.

Jon, too many versions, too similar names. That's why I originally downloaded the wrong app. I got the ones for Sierra instead of for El Capitan. I'm working on something else now, anyway.

There is, apparently, a way to adjust minimum font size in Safari 10. See this FineTunedMac thread.

Ah yes, the old "defaults write" method! The major trick for all these is to find the file that needs to be written to! THANKS! First thing I'll do tomorrow! thumbup.gif

Ditto, Jon.

Someone please simplify it for me, as I know nothing about "terminal."

Just open Terminal like any other app. Type in your password, if asked. Type the 'defaults write' text as copied from the site. Press return. Quit Terminal. Terminal is just another app except it is all text-based, just like the Apple ][! Just don't type commands into Terminal unless you know where they come from. Just like opening any downloaded app; know where it came from and that the dev is trustworthy.

Replace the "X" with whatever minimum font size you want. You'll also probably have to Quit Safari and then open it again for the changes to take effect.
CODE
defaults write com.apple.Safari com.apple.Safari.ContentPageGroupIdentifier.WebKit2MinimumFontSize -int X

First, I wasn't understanding it was code for terminal (I have had a long couple of days), and I don't normally do terminal things. I don't understand terminal other than I can screw up my iMac in a major way, so terminal commands were always something Sneakers did for me. Then it took me a minute to realize I had to replace the "X" with a number.  rolleyes.gif  Like I said, it has been a long couple of days filled with loads of little problems that piled one on top of another, and the trend continues this morning. I really didn't want to fess up to my brain dead moment, so I said "never mind". Now you know. And I’m not blonde either.  harhar.gif

Yes, Terminal can be dangerous and intimidating. That's why I try to copy and paste a command instead of typing it, in order to avoid typos.

Jim's instructions are good but he failed to tell you how to get to Terminal. It resides in /Applications/Utilities. The most intuitive way to get to it is to be in Finder and click Go. Then, select Utilities.Another, even easier way to launch an app. is to invoke Spotlight and type the name of the app. Then, when Spotlight suggests Terminal, simply press Return. I usually use Spotlight as a fast app launcher.

The most intuitive way
In my opinion (which is the one most important to me!) the most intuitive way to access it is to use PathFinder and have Terminal available in any PF window, even both panes. If you still use Finder, simply drag Terminal into the Side Bar, although I assume everyone would have "Utilities" in that area, already. Or install it in the Dock. Is "Spotlight" still in the OS?! 8)

I found Applications/Utilities/Terminal and opened Terminal. Do I then use a new window and paste in
defaults write com.apple.Safari com.apple.Safari.ContentPageGroupIdentifier.WebKit2MinimumFontSize -int X
???
I do understand that the X must be replaced with a number.

Thanks.

You don't have to open a new window. Paste that command via the usual command and press Return. As was previously stated, you'll have to relaunch Safari to see the change take effect.

Please note that no computers were harmed by Terminal when using it like this. Just remember to know where the 'defaults write' text comes from! If you find it here, it is usually OK, at least if you recognize the name of the poster. Might be wise to check another post from that 'person' and compare their "Posts:" number with who you think it is. As my eyes get older (almost as fast as the rest of my body), and my mind slows down (even more!), I sometimes "see" one thing and then discover it was something else! Matching/comparing "Posts:" numbers should point out an imposter!

Of course, we always encourage asking a question! This is the only forum where I know that I can ask a "stupid" question and not be ridiculed (too badly rolleyes.gif )!

Search the forums with something like "defaults write" and you might find some more useful things that have been found. Just confirm what version of the OS/app they were created for. They may not be compatible in newer or older versions. It's similar to cooking, if you have a bit of training on how to use the stove/oven, you can make some great meals. That's one reason I like to just sit, eat, and praise the cook! laughhard.gif

Yes, I just checked the App Store (which was not indicating any updates available) and then it 'woke up' and listed both Safari and the Security Updates. rolleyes.gif So I can still wait on getting MacOS 10.12 Sierra. clap.gif

Yup, I just updated and there is that lovely option. Happy day!

BTW, before I updated, since I had run the Terminal hack, I ran the "undo" hack in Terminal so that Safari was reset back to the tiny font. For those who ran the hack, here's the undo hack:

CODE
defaults delete com.apple.Safari com.apple.Safari.ContentPageGroupIdentifier.WebKit2MinimumFontSize

Unfortunately, I'm not seeing the correct results on my file-based 'home' page. It could be a WU insert that is Flash-based. wallbash.gif  I may have changed that linked image after Safari lost it's text-size 'mind'. And I can probably edit things and get it to look better. Regular sites are fine...
