And I hate, really hate, to put in the 4 digit passcode.
So I disabled it. Using this tutorial,

Tried other ways to fix it, and did restart the phone to fix the problem, but no, so I just disabled it.
So now I cannot use Apple Pay, but its worth not having to mess around with the passcode every time I want to use the thing.
Been doing a lot of gardening and work with dirt, wonder if the fingerprint got worn down too much?
Can you use an eye scan for an iPhone?
Would be quicker and probably better, as dirt doesnt get into my eye even in the garden. Not very often

Just like you can change the passcode. It's a computer not a rock, it's always re-programmable... at least until it "dies". 
You can actually set up multiple fingerprints, even from different people! I think five is the maximum number (people and/or finger prints). You certainly paid a 'pretty penny' for the feature... 
Even if you've worn off too much of your 'print' it would be difficult to wear down/off all five. And they will regenerate in about two weeks to a fortnight, anyway. Your whole outer skin layer is replaced about every 30 days.

Have you tried resetting the fingerprint access? I was having trouble with my iPad not recognizing my fingerprint when I used my index finger - no idea why - but it works quite well with my thumb. So that's what I use.
Having an iPhone with no passcode or fingerprint access is nuts. Please read this Quora discussion, as it covers pretty much all the important points. Note - some of the posts aren't terribly current, but much of the info is still valid:

I know its stupid not to have this set up properly, but I think the thumb print is probably my answer. Or my left hand, or a couple of fingers.
And one from my husband.
Then put a passcode back in, but hopefully not have to use it constantly.
How about one of these too?

Just don't forget the passcode. I think there is a counter that will require you to enter the code after a certain number of fingerprint uses. Also before an OS update, although that may just be the way I have it set up. The point is, fingerprints can be forged (latex imprints), operational ererz, etc. so requiring the code occasionally simply reinforces you are the real owner of the device. 
Your 'alternative' might work, but do you really trust your four-legged friends, especially if they have lots of followers on Facebook or Twitter?! And you think your data usage is high now...

I like that my iPad Mini allows for more than a 4 digit passcode; but I am with Paddy about the logic of not having a passcode on your iPhone. This was rammed home to me recently when I left my Kindle behind at a medical appt. I realized that since I'd turned off the passcode, the Kindle was wide open and someone could have purchased a ton of books or other things during that time when I was driving home and hadn't reported the loss. When I get my Kindle back (it was found), I'll be turning the passcode back on whenever I take it out of the house. Takes just a moment to set and it's better insurance than nothing.
I hope you get the phone issue resolved, and turn the passcode back on. Just don't do like many of my friends: 7777

I certainly would be very nervous with not having it protected properly. I will set up 3 or four fingers, thumb too, and put in a passcode and maybe Lillys paw.

It also requires that you remember to go through the process every time you leave the house. Then you have to remember to reverse it when you return, although that would, at least, not cause a security problem. Apple has made it extremely easy to use the fingerprint ID function (with up to five different fingers!) and you have paid for that. Get it fixed, if it;s actually broken. Assign additional fingers, if it's not broken. Now! If you have actually worn down or injured your fingers/skin down through both the dermis and epidermis, you should probably see a doctor.
I can't believe you aren't using all six positions available for the Pass Code!
Is that just for the adrenaline rush for playing dangerous behaviors?

It doesn't leave the house that often, so it's not a big thing. My iPhone, iPad Mini, and my 'laptop' are all password protected, and that protection is always on, even when at home. I use the fingerprint id on the iPhone and iPad, and on the laptop I have to type it every time.
Like xABD and Paddy, I highly, strongly, urgently, recommend that you password protect your iPhone.
