Title: Permissions

So, after reading many threads here, I finally updated from 10.8 to 10.12, largely because some of the sites I use refused to show themselves to my ancient system. Other than having trouble figuring out what a WPA2 password was, I've had zero problems. Yay!

I do have one question. I don't see anything in Disk Utility about repairing permissions. Is this no longer necessary?

Apple feels that repairing permissions is no longer necessary. As I understand it, the last few OS's made it somewhat superfluous anyway. However, you can still repair permissions with apps like OnyX, Cocktail, Disk Warrior, and TechTool Pro. I believe that these apps focus on User permissions rather than System settings. User permissions were never touched by Disk Utility.
