Hi, Jon, Jim, and everyone!

After all the stuff you helped me do for TM and my External HD etc, (thank you thank you thank you!!!), this popped up on my desktop:

I just clicked on Close.  What am I missing?

That first image/dialog should only appear in two cases, as far as I know:
  1. You are turning OFF the external drive before ejecting it or before you Shhutdown the Mac.
  2. The drive's power supply is weak/intermittent. It is also possible the port you are using for the drive is weak/intermittent.
Case 1:Case 2:

I get that message on occasion with my two SSDs that are in a thunderbolt dock by OWC. I had OWC replace the dock under warranty, but it still happens from time to time. As far as I can tell, there has been no damage to the SSDs, and I simply shut the dock off, start it again, and the drives mount. Oddly, I also have an OWC thunderbolt enclosure that has two HDDs (Hitachi, as it turns out) and I never have had this problem. It's not the SSDs, per se, because the same thing had happened when I had plugged HDDs into the dock.

This only happens upon waking the computer from sleep. I can't explain it.

As to your situation, can you enter Time Machine? That's one way of testing the drive. You can also try to restore an old version of a file (you'll be able to keep both the old and new) to see if it works.

I'm really not turning off or shutting down anything... I just make my computer go to sleep when I'm done for a period of time, or when I'm done for the day.

I did check TM and yes, I can enter it and it seems to be working fine. whoosh.gif

Thanks, fellers!!! cheer2.gif

OK, but you really should let the computer decide when it wants to go to sleep. You should have learned that with any child you cared for...

I assume by "when I'm done for the day" you mean you either manually Shutdown or you have Energy Saver  Shutdown the Mac at the time you designated. Do you use Energy Saver System Pref? dntknw.gif Many don't.

I suppose there should have been a "Case 3:"; "I can't explain it" laughhard.gif

Personally, I think it is an over-sensitive power supply, low voltage on the receptacle, a lees-than-optimum cable or either port (computer or drive).

Do you have another suitable, empty port on the Mac? Is there more than one port on the drive's box? Do you have another cable of the type needed? Are there any high-powered electrical devices nearby (microwave, personal time-travle phone booths, etc.)?

"OK, but you really should let the computer decide when it wants to go to sleep."
I didn't really know that!

"I assume by "when I'm done for the day" you mean you either manually Shutdown or you have Energy Saver Shutdown the Mac at the time you designated. Do you use Energy Saver System Pref? dntknw.gif Many don't."
I do have Energy Saver checked for putting hard disks to keep, wake for network aces, and start up automatically after a power failure. When I'm done for the day, I just go up to the apple and select Sleep.  Been doing this since 2013.  rolleyes.gif

"Are there any high-powered electrical devices nearby (microwave, personal time-travle phone booths, etc.)?"
OMG, Jim, it's like you can see into my house!!!!  I thought there was a decent cloaking spell over that phone booth! wink.gif

Check the Energy Saver again! You're only letting it marginally save energy. Click the "Schedule..." button. Wow! How about them "apples"! At least let the machine be ready to go to work as soon as you sit down; set the Startup time for when you usually have breakfast, for example. Don't worry about shutting it down, either, just pick a time when you normally hit the sack, or maybe a few hours earlier?

BTW, I think you'll have fewer un-mounted external drives if you shut down the machine, not just put it to sleep. Many have complained that 'waking from sleep' is when the eternals fail to mount or lose contact with the machine. Most external drives, at least in my experience, will shut down when they 'see' that the computer has been shut down. In other words, they shut down when the computer does. This opposite happens when you (or Energy Saver wink.gif ) turns on the machine; the externals will also turn on. This helps have the computer ready to 'see' the drives earlier because the basic OS tasks will have been completed. I can't prove that idea, of course, but I've nevur ben rong far yeerz!

WARNING: The following is pure Opinion! eek2.gif
BTW, I'm not a fan of "Waking after a power failure". Sometimes, the power goes right back off. Often with brief but disastrous power surges! That's just hard on the drives and the internal hardware. The worst thing you can do to a computer is to simply pull the power cord, or have the power company do that for you. If that happens while the disk is writing something, you can just about guarantee corrupting the drive. Usually, DW can repair it, but it really can perform miracles.

If you have an unplanned power outage more than once a year or you have important data on your drives (internal or external), I always suggest investing in an Uninterruptible Power System that can automatically shut down the Mac and, therefore, any external devices, in an orderly manner. This means the UPS should be able to run your set up for at least several minutes. Better ones can also protect you from power surges and brown outs. Cheaper ones will claim that function but usually can only block a power surge once. They will then need to be repaired or replaced. They will die saving your System. It's sad, but you can buy better UPSs that have less extreme methods thus reducing 'funeral' expenses. wink.gif

Hokie Dookie!
Wut dew ah gno?
1) nuffin'
2) nut munch
3) sum stoof, sum tymes

I made some changes to my Energy Saver options. Thanks for the expanded info!

Generally, I've been really lucky with NOT having any unplanned or planned power outages, and they have occurred maybe once every 4 or 5 years.  Thanks for the info about the Uninterruptible Power System and what it can do. Do you have a recommendation for any one in particular?

For Uninterruptible Power Supplies, visit http://www.apc.com/us/en/. They are a well-known manufacturer of UPSs. If you don't want to buy directly from them, Office Depot and Staples sell their products.

Thanks for the extra help and replies and links.  I have not done much of anything that I hoped to get done, since some new & more frequent a-fib episodes have reared their ugly heads.  I'm dealing with those, and working with some good medical folks, too.

DO NOT SHUTDOWN THE deFIBULTOR, yet. Please await further instructions soon. In consultation with the device Creator at the moment. thumbup.gif

Good one, Jim!   Tomorrow, I hope to get a referral from my primary to either a cardiologist, or to an electrophysiologist.
Apparently, all electrophysiologists are cardiologists, but not all cardiologists are electrophysiologists.  I'd love to consult with the best guy in the country, Dr. Andrea Natale, but also hope I never need to have a consult with him, YKWIM?   unsure.gif

I'm pretty sure ya have to be smart to *drive* an airbus (Don't be shy! Quietly embrace the IQ!), but not everyone knows the advanced vernacular relative to attribution!
