Title: an honest scammer
Post by: jchuzi on March 26, 2018, 04:42:46 PM
Today, I received two phone calls from 407-627-1213. A quick Google search revealed that this is a scam. However, Caller ID lists the name of the caller as Fraud. I guess I can't complain!

Too funny! Our phone announces the calls - it would have been fun to hear it announce that the caller was called "Fraud"!!

Clearly someone misconfigured something...either that, or caller ID is acquiring a mind of its own. wink.gif

My iPhone 6s displays “Likely Scam” when I receive a call with a ‘spoofed, number or location.
Usually the same ‘friendly’ voice announcing my ‘good luck’ for allowing them to waste my time...  followed quickly by my hanging up....

Is there some reason to answer an unknown number (or rarely an unknown name)?! I just wish the land line had the seemingly unlimited 'blocked' number list that the cell does! yes.gif thumbup.gif clap.gif

We dont answer any, not any, calls which we cannot positively ID. The call ID is wonderful for screening them. Block the ones which you see twice or more. Works well.
Tho some fraud guys have figured how to spoof numbers from your area, and make up names which are common in your area.
When we see one of those, and it hangs up, its spoofed, but anybody who really wants you to answer, will leave a message.
This works well for us. Wouldnt it be nice if all these fake calls would be screened out before they got to us.

Call Blocking is only free on our cell phone. AT&T allows only 10 numbers for free on the landline (yes, we still have two landlines). Area code, Exchange code make no difference. The whole number can be spoofed. We're pretty familiar with names of people we want to talk to (much smaller group than the names we know! tongue.gif ).

I did get a kick out of one that AT&T passed to us yesterday with "Unassigned number" as the ID. rolleyes.gif I guess since hey can't/don't charge for long distance much anymore, they couldn't care less about where the call originates. OTOH, they do seem to have a list of the few remaining "unassigned numbers"...

I can also silence the iPhone ringing by pressing either volume button. clap.gif

We also can block individually on both landline and iPhones. Ive never reached a limit for blocking calls on either the iPhones or the landline? Yet.
Seems like we are getting far far fewer of these telemarketing and annoying calls now.

And the spam filters are working extremely well too, almost no spammy emails now.

My phone company is the same way, but Paddy helped me solve that problem. I purchased this phone system. It has the ability to block loads of phone numbers (I don't remember exact number), so my phone does the work that my phone company won't do. Even better, I have it programed to work with my iPhone and so I can use the units to answer my cell without having to carry that around with me. I like the quality and sound of the phone and recommend it.

Thanks, kimmer! I take back half of what I've about you! laughhard.gif scram.gif

Of course, Amazon shows the "Manufacturer has Discontinued" that model. Maybe it had something to do with the 4-phone model being cheaper than the 2-phone, and the 3-phone being the most expensive. Pricing by dart throwing? dntknw.gif laughhard.gif

I have a Panasonic too, I think I can block up to 100 numbers, but never gotten that far yet.
I will look up how to program the cell number into it, that would be convenient if Im out in the garden and covered with dirt or water.

Its funny how we feel doggone Naked if we dont have our iPhones with us. I went to the library this morning, and forgot it, felt very odd.

Well, I'm only taking back 1/4 of what I've said about you. So there. tease.gif  whistling.gif laugh.gif

Yes, but the phone is still available: Sold by LYBSS SBM and Fulfilled by Amazon.

I believe Panasonic brought out a 5 phone system to replace it, and if you need 5 phones, go for that version. Same phone, same "details".

My phone company must be labeling spurious calls. Today, caller ID identified the caller as Spam, Dallas TX. I did answer the phone, and a female voice said, "Please stop what you're doing". I obeyed her command. I was answering the phone and I immediately stopped by hanging up. (Incidentally, I have received this come-on before, but from a male voice.)

Just for s**** and giggles, sometimes I'll pick up and say hello... I'll say hello a few times, as the person either asks for me or DH by name.  Then I say "Fabric store! You want fabric?" or else I'll say "Pizza. You want pizza?"  This ends in a hang up and hopefully my number taken off that particular list.

Other times, when they ask for DH by name (*HOW* to they get DH's last name, which is an unusual surname & different from mine?), I'll go into a spiel about "WHO is this?  Is this Bobby???"  Of course it's not "Bobby" but they think they're going to eventually get to DH, then I say "Oh, this is not Bobby?  You want who?" and then I add "Nope! He moved!"

One time a guy called and I was not feeling the love.  I started a conversation with him about how he knew my DH, and I named a high school in another state. Of course, the caller said, he remembered my DH from high school.  Then I said "Class of -1995, yes?" and the caller agreed and started talking B.S. and saying he even remembered me as DH's main squeeze and how happy he was that we married.  I ended up telling him DH and I were moving to Colorado or Wyoming.

If you have the time and inclination, try playing Fun with Callers --and it makes for some funny stories, sometimes, too.  All in all, I'm glad we don't get too many of these kinds of calls.

Smiles,
Sooz

You may have managed make it on to the "Don't call this crazy woman!" list? laughhard.gif scram.gif
