Title: Which camcorder???
Post by: DenimGirl on August 03, 2003, 04:06:03 AM
Hi folks,

I hope you can help me.

I have an iMac G3 PowerPC 450Mhz (with firewire) OS 9.0.4 with a dvd/cd rom drive.  I also have iMovie 2.0.3

I want to purchase a camcorder (once I learn a bit more about them) but I have no idea which one to buy that will be compatible with my computer and software.  I did visit the apple site and went to their compatibility page but from what I understand, these are all for OS X

I don’t want anything too professional, just a home user of the camcorder (you know, the kids, dog and all that).  I'd like to be able to edit my movies in iMovie and export them back to the camcorder.

Can you please tell me where I can find out what would be suitable for me, or better still, can you guys advise me.

Regards

DenimGirl:

Most any camcorder with a firewire port will work on your G3 and iMovie, and not just under OS X, but OS 9 too.  I have the Canon ZR 30 and it is a great miniDV camcorder.  It takes the best video and sound quality I have ever seen in a non-pro camera.  I have a graduate degree in media, so I know camcorders.  The Canon ZR series camcorders are really prosumer quality for a consumer price.

The ZR 30 has alot of other features (e.g. it can take still photos on a memory card individually, or from and to the miniDV tape).  It has a 10x optical zoom and electronic stablization, all very important to getting good footage. You can hook it up to most any TV and use it in VCR mode.

The Canon ZR 30 is a few generations old in the Canon line, so you can pick one up much cheaper than I paid for it a couple of years ago.  I seen it go for as low as $385 (I paid $800 US).  The ZR 20 is even cheaper with the same feature set, less the still photo memory card.  Canon's ZR series is now up to ZR 50, so there are plenty of deals around.

Other brands of miniDV camcorders work just fine for most people. but I recommend a Canon for the best quality and compatibility.  I hope this helps you decide.

Kelly: your right!  blush-anim-cl.gif  I Put ZR 50 instead of ZR 60.  It was real late.  I didn't know that the price of a new ZR 60 was that low.  Thanks for that link.  It's has much better features than my ZR 30.  I guess it's time I buy a new one!   B)

Hmm. Looks like you don't want that model. It's NTSC. smile.gif

You want one that supports the PAL Standard I think.

I don't know anything about this model.

But you can use it to find a reseller. smile.gif

You want features and price similar to the ZR60 I think. smile.gif

Well thanks to all who replied, but after all that my budget did not allow for the movie camera  sad.gif

I now have a digital camera instead...and it takes little movies too (see later post) it's a Sony cybershot DSC-P32.
