Title: Wireless broadband coming my way!
Post by: JohnKentucky on August 03, 2003, 11:05:04 AM
Coming soon!

Courier-Journal reported:

US Wireless Online will roll out its broadband network over the next four to five weeks, offering $30-a-month high-speed wireless Internet service for homes and small offices from downtown to Middletown and parts of Southern Indiana.

The Louisville company, which already offers line-of-sight wireless service for commercial customers, hopes to make a splash with a system that delivers Internet access indoors and out — anywhere within two miles of one of its transmitting cells.

Click the link above for more info. Reported 1MB/sec download with 512KB upload..not too bad. Right now I get 2.5 down...will have to check this out!

What kind of service are you on? That sounds like the premium cable service I could have, if I wanted to spend twice what I pay now.

I have cable broadband. They only offer one type of service. It's cheaper than DSL (and faster!). It runs me $44/month due to me not having cable TV.

I'm going to sign up with this wireless one and see how the speed and service are. So far I'm pleased with Insightbb but if this wireless works out then I'll switch.

I'm just surprised at your download speed! My cable might get as fast as 2Mb per/sec, but not faster.

Was confused for a moment. smile.gif

That's Megabits.

One Megabit = 125 Kilobytes. KBs.

Still plenty fast. wink.gif

1 Mbit = 128 Kilobytes, but who's counting smile.gif

With my home cable service (Road Runner), I get 1.5-2.3 Mb/s depending on when I do the test.

Up at school, I normally get 300-700 Kb/s. I wish I had a 200 mile long ethernet wire :-D

Can I butt into this conversation to get some advice? :-)

I'm still on 56k dialup service. (hate it!!) My ISP in our small town now offers broadband wireless service too. But being a PC guy he can't explain to me what I would need to hook up the service to my G4/400 Mac. OS9.1. (Soon to be OSX).
He claims he's much faster than the DSL competition.
(For business reasons, I will stay with this ISP)

He sells his PC customers an aerial installed on the house, hard wiring to the computer, and an Orinoco Card (?).

So, would that work for a Mac, or do I need some other type of card?
What kind of software would I need to make it work?
Are there any other considerations?

Hope you can clear this up for me? Thanks.(

I'm think he just puts up some type of bridge on your house, configures that for his network, and then installs an 802.11b card in the PC. If your Mac is Airport ready, you should need an Apple AirPort card instead of the Orinoco.

However, this is just speculation. Does he have a website with some details on his service?

Giantmike,
The website for my ISP is
http://www.jan.norcom.mb.ca/MainFrame.htm

Could someone translate/explain to me what equipment my Mac would need based on the ISP's posted question:
"What equipment do I need at the end of my connection?"

bil207. Bill. I believe it's your picture making me scroll here. smile.gif

Too big for my screen at 800x600.

Could you make it smaller or make it a link please. smile.gif

Raven. Unless you're pretty close you'll need their antenna I think.

That and an Apple Airport Card would do it as far as I know.

Isn't there any other Broadband available?

Thanks Kelly.
Yes, there is DSL available from another source, but I have to stay with my ISP for now for business reasons.

So the Airport card takes the place of that Orinoco card that he sells to PC users?

As far as I know Raven. smile.gif

I could not find an Orinoco Card for your machine.

They do sell Orinoco Cards for mac Laptops that many people use.

See what they have to say about it. smile.gif
