Title: Solving Computer Woes
Post by: Xairbusdriver on June 24, 2021, 09:35:14 AM
So, you think it is difficult helping solve a computer problem by phone (or with a help site!)? How about working on 30+ year old hardware that's not even on the Earth?!

What problem? Follow the advice of all Microsoft support staff: Reboot the computer. This works especially well if you speak with a foreign accent.

Last week, the BBC ran a documentary 'Goodbye Cassini - Hello Saturn' (from 2017) when the device was sent into Saturn's surface. I can't even start to guess how difficult it was to control it from a billion miles away as it spent 13 years traversing the Saturn system and a total of 20 years in space. A fascinating documentary followed the project's last year or so.

NASA tells the story here (https://solarsystem.nasa.gov/missions/cassini/overview/)

More info and some amazing details on the memory available in this 50 year old design! The buss cables on this thing are bigger than the 240V electrical utility connections for our house!!
