I simply could not get it to install a clean system folder and then merge with CC as I wanted... I keep getting a "BigSystemMorsels can't be intialized, installation will be canceled" or something close to that. So finally I decided "what the heck!" and installed OS9.1 directly over OS8.6. At first several programs gave me type 3 errors but after some fiddling and TechToolPro and Disk Warrior everything is so far as I can tell working well. If any errors do crop up they should be minor I hope...
I've installed iTunes 2.0.4 which is what the 9.1 was really wanted for in the first place so that should go over well. For me too on the Pismo 9.1 has turned out to be more stable than 8.6... maybe that'll stop the panicked phone calls "post-work" at 1:30am...

Could be way off the mark on that one. Maybe OS 9xxxx stops at 2.0.4.

I just noticed that you had posted. What interested me was
your comments about OS 8.6.
Paddy had posted something about her husband's Lombard
unexpectedly crashing and he was running OS 8.6, too.
I am also running OS 8.6 on my Mac 4400/200.
I have had nothing but problems since I connected to the
Cox HSI, with IE 5 and OE 5.0.6.
I was seriously considering wiping the hard drive and doing
a clean install using all the OS 8 to 8.6 .
We currently have very little in our folders right now.
The System is glutted with lots of empty folders, multiples of
the same folders and stuff that is not functioning because,
as the Dialog messages tell me " the .......cannot be opened
because the original application could not be found." All of
the stuff that is currently glutting the System is inherited.
I was just wondering is you had problems with "freezes and
crashes" with the OS 8.6 and if that is what you meant my
instability.

I don't know what it is... when I ran the Lombard with OS8.6 it was pretty good, I find OS9.1 is better on the Pismo, but my ex who now owns the Lombard keeps getting system bombs and hard freezes, so I thought I'd try the upgrade... he really wanted iTunes as well. I always kept that machine clean and tidy... ran maintenance regularly etc... But I will say that I think OS9.1 handles my cable connection a little better, the newer version of OpenTransport seems to be more robust. If you're serious about a reformat, do you have a CD of OS8.6 so as not to go through all the incremental upgrades? I think that would be better...

The Mac OS 8.6 Font Manager contains a bug which can cause a crash when "old style" fonts are used. Old style fonts are frequently missing a font family (FOND) resource, so the Font Manager creates one and adds it to the application or font suitcase. About Corrupt FOND Fixer
It is not necessary to use Corrupt FOND Fixer unless you are using Mac OS 8.6.
Corrupt FOND Fixer is an application. All corrupt FOND resources created by the Mac OS 8.6 Font Manager bug can be permanently repaired by running Corrupt FOND Fixer once on each of your disks.
Corrupt FOND Fixer scans files for FOND resources that were created by the Mac OS 8.6 Font Manager and contain garbage data. When Corrupt FOND Fixer finds a corrupted FOND resource it presents a dialog identifying the file containing the corrupted FOND resource and gives you a choice of whether to repair the file or skip the file.
Instructions
Open Corrupt FOND Fixer then choose a disk, folder or file to scan for corrupted FOND resources.

Yes, I do have the OS 8.6 CD. Thank Heaven, you mean
if I wanted to, I could just use one CD, just the OS 8.6
CD? Now, that is a relief.
I am really going to think hard about doing a thorough
clean install.

kelly, you're "the man",I read something about corrupt fonts, but I don't believe
that it was mentioned expressly for OS 8.6. That was
about a month ago, though.
Honestly, though, the hard drive is loaded with all kinds
of defunct stuff. I really may be better off just doing a
really thorough wipe and install. As it is, on a file by file,
or disk by disk basis, I could be doing this for a very long
time.
What I could do though, is to run the download for the
font problems after the clean install of the OS 8.6.
What do you think?

If you have a lot of duplicates and junk. Throw them away.
Reformatting your Drive and starting over might be good but..
Everything you have so far would be gone.
I also don't think a Clean Install is a good option at this pont.
That Fond fixer is not that hard to run.
Just takes a few minutes.

As usual, Kelly offers sound advice.
Fonts, which don't often get much attention, can be a problem. FontFixer was really neat, when I had 8.6 first installed. Pogue can tell you "the rest of the story"
It's best initially to work around the margin of an issue to see if something simple - - such as fixin' fonts - - will solve much of a problem.
However, IF . . .
- you have the disks for your desired applications/utilities/OSes, and
- you have only a few documents which you easily can save elsewhere, and
- you have screen shots of all your settings to aid reestablishing key preferences
However, I'd be cautious and read Pogue very carefully before beginning the task. After doing it a few times in your "forthcoming" Mac-career, it becomes easy, even though it's not most peoples' choice on how to spend an afternoon.
Added note: A Pismo is a PowerBook, G3, FireWire 2000. Pismo was an Apple code name during it's development, which seemed to "stick" with later customers. It's my favorite Mac.

Sorry Myrna... but I completely forgot to mention the "font" issue with OS8.6... Kelly is right in suggesting you try that first. I counted it out because I had already done it long ago as a precautionary thing.

Yeah it is, isn't it? But I honestly didn't do a thing... afterall it "is" me who hears when it's not right... Seiously we get along well enough, I'd like to see it work for him since it gets him out of the PC camp and he really does like the machine.
Dick explained "Pismo", it actually looks much like the Lombard. I like both PowerBooks but this Pismo has become my favourite now, with the upgrades available and all I can see me keeping it for a very long time to come!

Since you upgraded from 8.6 to 9.1 I was wondering if you could check and see which version of the extension Apple CD/DVD Driver you have now in your Extensions folder.
The reason I ask is that I had installed iTunes 1.0.1 and then 2.0.4.
iTunes 1.01 evidently installed a new Apple CD/DVD Driver ( 1.4.2).
I was getting System errors on 9.1 so I installed Apple CD/DVD Driver (1.4) from my OS9.1 CD and I'm not getting the errors anymore.
Just curious. No hurry.

Hello kelly,I'm sure that you are right in what you are suggesting.
I just thought by erasing the hard drive and Installing
OS 8.6, it would save me more time and trouble .
If you are following me, I would be entering all my own
choices and preferences. Any add on, plug-ins, and
stuff would be of my choice.
I know that it would take time to set up these things.
I will just do the "font" thing to see if that clears up
some of my problems. I suppose that at my leisure,
I can trash some of those old files and stuff - but there
is a great deal.

Hello Dick,On second thought, I guess I should postpone doing
anything dramatic.
I have had major headaches and spent long hours
with the Mac. Trying to run certain applications can
be a problem.
It must be in my DNA, I am such a neatnik. I really hate
clutter. I don't mind having a lot of stuff, if it isn't
useless and it's well organized.
As per your suggestion and kelly's, I will defer any
major changes- for now.

Oh, I was up bright and early this morning. I started up
the Mac and picked up where I left off last night,
The ever present problems with Printing and also with
FlashPlayer. What a mess.
This morning though, the dialog told me that it couldn't
find my Personal LaserWriter 320! What fun.
It was bad enough just having PostScript errors.
I keep telling myself "One day, you will look back on all
the folly of your "Adventures" and be able to laugh about
it."
So, I will try to "fix" the problems today. It's a brand new
start to a brand new week.
Duty calls, so I will see you a bit later.

Myrna... I know they were not funny at the time, but when I started with my first puter (a PC)... I made some mistakes that make even me laugh now...

I did find it on Apple's site, but they have a way of removing things that are handy for OS9.x I think...
I'll send it to you to hang onto just in case... it's 1.7mb, shouldn't be a problem on cable.
Apple's FTP site has jumped from v1.1.2 up to v.1.1.9... iTunes 2.0.4 recommended v.1.1.5...
