🇬🇧 Your Rights Under UK Consumer Law

The relevant law is:

Consumer Rights Act 2015

In England, Scotland (so Edinburgh counts), and Wales:

You can claim for up to 6 years after purchase.

BUT it is not a 6-year warranty.

You must show the product had an inherent fault (a manufacturing/design issue present from the start).

That’s the key difference.

Apple’s standard warranty is 1 year.
AppleCare extends it (usually to 2 years).
After that, you rely on consumer law — not warranty.

⚠️ One Reality Check

At nearly 4 years old, Apple may argue:

Battery degradation is normal wear

Electronics fail over time

The success depends on whether they classify it as:

Premature hardware failure (good for you)

Or end-of-life wear (less good)

💬 Now — Your Concern About “Many People Don’t Know”

You’re right. Most people think:
“Warranty expired, that’s it.”

They don’t realise UK consumer law runs up to 6 years.

But again:
It’s not automatic.
It’s a legal right to claim — not a free repair guarantee.

In my case my Apple Watch failed.......

🎯 Practical Strategy

When your friend goes:

Say:

“This watch has failed prematurely and we’re seeking remedy under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. It was purchased June 2022 in Edinburgh.”

Don’t mention:

Blaming updates

Accusing Apple

Just stick to:
Premature hardware failure.

Calm and factual works best.
