Title: What sites would you recommend?
Post by: kps on September 06, 2003, 10:28:09 AM
I have a PC using friend who's daughter will be studying graphic arts. He needs to research Mac models in order to meet his budget as well as have a machine to match her needs for the curiculum (Adobe software OS 9).

Any and all links, info, ideas appreciated.

Ian Page, author of MacTracker just informed me (yesterday) that a beta version of MacTracker for Windows was just released.
http://www.mactracker.ca

Aside from that there's
http://www.lowendmac.com (especially for older Macs)
http://www.everymac.com (but in order to get all infos you have to be a member)
and taking a look at Mac resellers who sell refurbished Macs is probably a good idea.

And there's my site.  blush-anim-cl.gif
But I don't have the price listed.

Okay, thanks for the links...

I have a possible switcher on my hands  biggrin.gif

What do you folks think a good machine would be? It needs to fit his budget...and he's cheap (and I do mean cheap) and run both OS 9 and OS X. I'm leaning toward one of the earlier MP or something like Bill and Gary's 933...

It's hard to say what another person can buy for hardware i guess.
Euhm... personally, i would also go for a single processor like 933 and not a dual one.
Not sure why actually but... well, maybe it's just better.
Something starting 867 or 933... yup that might be good.
If he likes gaming, than you should take that in consideration.

Yup, he's cheap when it comes to computers, he builds his own PCs from spare parts and ebay scavanging...but he understands that Macs are "premium" hardware. I want his daughter to have a good machine for school, but I also want him to see what a Mac with OS X can do...

So, yeah, I'm leaning toward machines not much older than 2yrs...but they're not all that "cheap". Realistically, my 350Mhz G4 or a B&W G3 would suit her just fine.

I should look after her interests and not try and convert him, eh? blush-anim-cl.gif

Cheap - not cheap - cheap - not cheap - hmmm . . .

Cheap minimum for OS X.x with reasonable future breathing room - AGP graphics  G4 (Sawtooth) with a 32 MB Macintosh Nvidia graphics card or another AGP video card that will handle the Quartz Extreme aspect of OSX.x well.  The Sawtooth comes in numerous flavours - 350-500 MHz - a good range for different budgets.  Some of the video cards have DVI output, some do not - something to consider.

Lotsa RAM - RAM is cheap.

Make sure you warn him away from a PCI/G4 - a novice might mistake it for a bargain.

Noise tolerance?  You may want to warn them away from the Leafblower Macs.

Moderate price range - something better.

Not cheap?  Hey - sky's the limit -

Choice is good -

The word 'cheap' and 933 in the same paragraphs. /grumble\
Wonder if I can still reach Shinnyhinny? Send him across the border for a visit. <gr>

I'm toying with the idea Karl of selling one of my 933s and tossing that revenue towards a G5 dual BUT it's a way-out-in-left-field thought only.
I've to much time and money invested in it ta take a nose dive.
Especially when it (both) are purring away.
Stripping it back down to stock just to sell at the going rate is not my style.

Hang on to that "gem" Bill, I don't think you wanna get paid in Canuck dollars.  biggrin.gif

I haven't heard of his progress yet, and I'm unsure as to how much he's actually prepared to spend.

The workhorse [MT300] is starting to see its last days as far as keeping up with much needed software etc etc .. Karl.
Might have to put the MT out to pasture and let the 933 take over.
What that 'option' would mean is selling it to the company. Thus money floats from one account to another.

Although that's way down on the 'think about' list let alone 'to get' list.biggrin.gif

LOL! That's about the only thing I miss about being self employed...the 'creative' accounting and all the 'gray' areas with respect to tax write-offs.  biggrin.gif
