If anyone is looking to buy an OS 9.xx bootable PowerMac G4, MacWarehouse has a 867MHz G4 for $1099.95
-
Looks like an inexpensive option.
I think those single processor 867s were Education models.
-
GaryS may be interested in this. (I just emailed him about it.) Bill also may have 5 square feet of room in his house that doesn't have a computer.
-
Thanks for the email Rob and the heads up bil207.
Right now I'm a little confused. I'm looking at the Dual1 Gig with the 64 Mb graphics card. It's tempting though.
I wonder how much of a difference I'd see?
-
Have you gottten over your Noise concern then?

Ah c'mon--you know what want to do--buy 'em both!

No L3 cache on that single 867.
Don't forget to check Apple Refurbs.
Click on the bottom left corner on Special Deals.
No towers at the moment.

Kelly etal,
I guess I did get over the sound issue and I could always get that new power supply if need be.
I just purchased the single processor 867 G4 advertised above only I had them add an ATI 9000Pro64mb Graphics card, 2-512Mb ram modules(in addition to the 256Mb it comes with) and a G70F Viewsonic monitor and it cost me a total of $1672.16 including shipping.
What do you think? I really don't need the speed of dual processors I guess.
-
Kelly,
No L3 Cache? Do you have a link? I can't find it on EveryMac.com.
-
By glancing through Kellys links,it looks like the 867 is the better buy [if cost is an issue] but the 1gb appears quicker.
Gary S, I was going to go for this one

because of the 2mb L3 plus it being still OS 9 bootable.
I had two main thoughts that kept coming back at me though.
1) I feel that the mirror machines were a bad design from the start.
Face it. What is apple doing now? Correcting their mistakes? You bet they are.
The first generation mirrors [just like the first generations of anything] are the old - trial and error - bit. The second generations out now seem better BUT like I mentioned ... bad design to start with.
2) Was the noise in the fans plus the power supplies.
Another part of Apples bad design.

You would not believe how many times I backed out of picking up one of those puppies!
I kept thinking about my 933 and how silent it is .... what it can do/what I want it to do.
When I ran across this deal on another 933 ... weighed all of the above plus cost and grabbed it.
As it stands I'm glad I did.
Who knows, maybe down the road Apple will come out with a whole different design dual PM.
I now have that option of waiting till then.

Hey Rob W ........ just two in this house bud.
-
Kelly,
I just talked to the Tech at MacWarehouse. Actually he told me the model I purchased is a QuickSilver and it does have a 2MB
L3 Cache. Here's what he showed me. It's a little misleading but I can do with a Quicksilver.
Original Web Page
Click on the More info button
Apple page
It's a QuickSilver.
-
Couldn't find where it said that it has a 2mb L3 in your second link Gary S BUT it does state that in the pdf.

And how many in the garage?
Gary, good luck with it! When's it coming? Will you let Sam use it? Or should I ask if he's going to let you use it??
-
"And how many in the garage?"
Just a bunch of tools Rob. <gr>
-
Yeah Bill,
That's where he had me go-to the PDF. There were 2 links I left out:
http://www.info.apple.com/support/applespec.html
Then to the PDF
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=43106
Thanks Rob. I figure if a 933 QS is good enough for Bill to have 2 of them an 867 QS ought to do me just fine for now.
I called them back and had them put in an internal 250 Zip
for a $100 so I can share files with the Beige Box.
-
Hey! I found it in Bil207s link under "tech Specs".
----
Up to 2MB DDR SRAM L3 cache per processor, with up to 4.6GBps throughput
---
You are going to have fun and then some Gary S!
Plenty of speed, ram, video card and a new monitor too boot.
-
Whoops .... that says "per processor".?.
My bad.
-
Well Gary. Enjoy your new toy.
he's saying it's the middle one of this batch.
http://new.lowendmac.com/ppc/quicksilver.html
But the specs at their site list it as M8688LL/A
A Google search turns up Education model hits.
Mostly gone now. Here's one in Google cache.
Education 867
Whatever.
So Bill. By design, do you mean the Buick Ventiports?
-
I'm getting wet feet now. I don't know what the morning may bring but I mat call them back and get the Dual 867.
I don't know these New world Macs.
Who thinks I'm selling myself short? ....Come on be honest!
I can take it.
-
I did find this on Google Kelly....
M8688LL/A
This one says it has a 1 Mb L3 Cache....go figure.
-
Gary S, I'm a little concerned why MacWarehouse is so vague on details with that $1099 sale.
Could very well just be something like lack of space blah blah. Could be lots of (innocence) reasons why. Yet still why should one have to *hunt* for specs?
Then again you did have a personal landline conversation with someone who knows what the skinny is.
Kelly.
Well yes that is their method for protecting the inner design flaws.

OK, I'll be as honest as possible, holding back no punches!
I really think you should have that model shipped to me and let me put it through a multi-month shakedown...I mean test. You'll get the shakedown!
I can e-mail you my address later today. Glad to be of service!
Frankly, this is an intriguing offer. If I hadn't just retired and not sure when my checks start arriving, I would be 'discussing' this with my wife right now. I still have an old Multi Scan 17" monitor that I'd love to hook up as a second desktop (I think there are adaptors made for that). So, I'd also have to shell out for a monitor for this puppy.

I just called MacWarehouse amd they were wrong the first time.
Kelly, you were right! It is that educational model.
This machine doesn't have an L3 Cache! I'm thinking of canceling my order
How important is that L3 Cache?
-
Gary. FWIW. I would not buy that machine.
I would recommend a Dual 867 for just a few dollars more.
Either from them or somewhere else.
And if you're still concerned about noise, you can't beat that Dual 800 Quicksilver.
Also. FWIW. I don't know why you feel you need the Radeon 9000 before you try the GeForce 2/4 MX.
Also. A Gig of RAM plus is overkill unless you're doing some reall RAM intensive stuff.
Also. Do you really need a Zip when you have Ethernet.
Also. Sorry. Just MHOs.
-
With a 1mb L3 cashe .... one could easily live with no problem whats-so-ever!
BUT NO L3 AT ALL!?!
It's your call of course Gary S.
Me. I'd drop that order now before it's processed through their network.
There has to be better deals out there.
-
My order has just been canceled.
I feel better now.......started to get the sweats there for a moment.
Thank you Kelly and Bill!
-
Gary. That would not have been a "bad" machine necessarily.
Just probably not the best Bang for the Buck.
Try to relax and have a little more fun with your search.
Whatever you get will be great.
-
Gary S,check your PM.
Now it stopped raining for a short. I'm off to the movie booth.
-
Bill,
I got your PM, I hope you got mine. Bill if you want to email me email me at home-I like your emails.
Kelly,
I don't want to sound like a winer but that's part of the problem.
I'm out in the boonies and I hate to shop! I'm not an Ebayer and I really don't know where to look other than the Warehouses.
I'm trying to figure it out. I haven't bought a Mac since 1998 so I'm really out of practice.
-
Well, I guess that emans you won't be sending that Mac to me!
As for shopping, you might want to try SmallDog, they won't have the cheapest prices, but I'll garuantee they will know what they are talking about. If you "register" you can but new machines, otherwise, you have to visit the store in person. Of course, they also have refurbished stuff along with standard new machine warranties (Apple Care).
One thing to watch out for is some of these 'warehouses/malls' have a physical operation in various states. If you live in one of those states, they will charge you state taxes. Of course, Congress is working on a plan to force that on all of us in the future!
