Not sure which one you have or if the newer ones are able to do this, but with the older iPods if you held down the Menu and Play buttons at the same time for a few seconds, the iPod resets.
Yeah...you don't want to disconnect like you did up ^^there.
Wait...I just re-read your post. Ok...so you used it as a HD. Yes, your songs and iPod will NOT show up in iTunes. That's what mine did when I used it once.
This doesn't make much sense here:

when i tried using it as a hard drive last night, my songs disappered, but the space they took up was still gone. I then hooked it up to my computer,
If you used it as a hard drive, then it should have already been hooked up. Perhaps you meant that you had restarted the Mac and chose the main HD instead of the iPod to boot off of and then disconnected the iPod? Cause I really hope you didn't eject/disconnect the iPod while it was booted up as a hard drive!
I don't own an iPod, so I don't know. But I checked Apple's support websites.
One of the solutions is this one:
QUOTE
Let the iPod Battery Drain
In extremely rare cases the iPod might get into a state in which it needs to be drained completely before it can be reset. If the above steps did not resolve the issue, disconnect the iPod from any power source and leave it disconnected for approximately 24 hours. After this period connect it to power and reset.
