Title: Attention TS - S.W.A.T. team
Post by: george on February 27, 2003, 03:23:00 PM
Hi Kelly,Jennie,Harv,Beacher et al,
I have now managed get my second machine a G3 up and running on a 4GB SCSI HD 256ram with OS9 I have also managed to initialize a 12.7GB IDE HD on which I would like to install OS X but when I reach the stage of nominating this  drive I am informed that this is not possible it lists some  gobbledygook about 8mb of space required and then I'm lost.
Is there some obviously  simple procedure that I am missing?
George

OS X needs to be installed on the first 8Gb partition on your model machine. Format and partition that drive, make the first partition 8Gb or smaller and it will install.

Bobw, I can see what you are saying but do not know how to format and partition I thought that initializing was the same as formatting (obviously not)and when I partitioned the drive it showed up as two separate drives.....as you can see Mac procedure is all very new to me.Can you walk/talk me through the procedure?

OK, you've successfully partitioned the drive. That means you've also initialized/formatted it. Is the partition you trying to install OS X on within the first 8 GB of that hard drive? If not, try installing on the other partition if it's big enough.

Hey George.

Have you done this stuff on a PC? macs are similar, only different.

This is using it in OS 9.x Launch Drive Setup.

Click on the Custom Setp Button. That's where you Partition.

Good explanation here.

George. Forgot to mention.

You'll probably want to choose Mac OS Extended to keep down the Allocation Block size.

Kelly,
I downloaded the link suggested by you and BINGO I have (apart from my new G4) another two machines up and running, one is the G3 and the other is a Performa 6400/200. My thanks to you and the other band of dedicated TSers for their help and most of all their patience.
A special thanks to Iain for his e-mail    contribution.
George.
ps
Three machines     what do I do next I ask myself?
