Hi,
I'm using IE 5.2.2. After I made the move to OSX in December, because I did the reformat/partition my old plugins that I had in OS9 before didn't come along for the ride. I do have them on the backup CDs I made before the reformat.
Every now and then one of us comes to a site that needs a plugin of some type. When I click on the button for the plugin, I don't end up at a site to download them. My question is (finally ) can I just drag the plugins that I have on my OS9 backup CD from before--and if so, where in OSX do they go to be used with IE?

Where: Library > Internet plug ins.

In that folder, for the QT plugin, if I try to look in that folder, I see a message that states "There is no default application specified to open the document 'Quicktime Plugin.Plugin.'" Then it gives me the option to choose the application. What do I choose?? IE??

Rob, My 2ยข...
There are so many plug-ins with differing requirements and they are (generally) so small and easy to install, so why mess around with the old OS 9 plug-in? You never know what contamination/corruption/conflict (or other issues) may be present, so for the little extra effort, a clean down load and OS X install is preferable.

Harv, as always--you make sense. Any ideas on what app I'm supposed to choose for the QuickTime plugin I mentioned above?? (Would it be IE??)

Your NOT Rob.
That's the library.
What you can do is right click or control click (pending how you have you box set up) to
"Show Package Contents".
From there you can look around inside.

Ok, so now I'm confused. (Nothing new here. ) Bill, this began when my wife was going to certain sites that were telling her she needed the QT plugin. I even dowloaded the current version of QT to be sure. When I went to the plugins folder in the library I saw a QT folder. If I click on it, I see this message. So, now what??

If I may butt in... when you get that message, Rob, they want you to pick your browser of choice which will use the plugin. In this case it would be IE.
Getting much snow? We just got flurries, not even an inch.

Thanks Kris, I'll pass on the "butt in" line I was gonna do. Thanks--I thought that was the case, but wanted to be sure.
Our projected 6-10 inches of snow for today turned out to be about 2 inches.

Although the back of my mind still thinks nope.
The library is just that. A library.
Kps said something about the library and system way back when.
One shouldn't mess around in there unless you know what your doing.
Well considering I left this morning with two different colored socks on ...hush up Jen ... I don't play around with those guys.
What I meant is you CAN peek around by the Show Package Contents feature. AND do a bit of changing once inside. For an example the screensavers.
I've always been under the impression that you guild the apps (or browsers) towards what plugins you would want to function for whatever.
Not guild the plugins towards whatever.
For instance your IE browser. Use the "file helper" in the IE preference to point which plugin does what in IE.
Anyways ... my work boots and the mud covered up my screw up.

Just another cent on the original query, though this seems largely sorted.
As a rule, it's not a good idea to drag things like that from 9.x into X, because though they may seem the same, sometimes they're not, given the different underpinnings of the operating systems.

I didn't bother transferring the old plugins. Also, I couldn't select IE because it was grayed out--but turns out that wasn't the problem. When I went back to the site my wife had the problem with (a "Reading Rainbow" site--she's a kindergarden teacher) I realized that some of the links need QT which now seems to be working for those links, but others needed a "RealPlayer" plugin. I downloaded the free plugin, and now I get the message that the plugin didn't load correctly. I guess I could trash it and try the download again.
What a pain.
