I purchased a refurbished Emac/700 from Apple store. I need an external CD writer for it. Have USB ports, firewire ports. 
Low on cash, looking for function and price.Would appreciate suggestions on units and sellers.

I got an external DVDRV at 4Xspeed and it nice and reasonably priced too. Ipaid 204.00 or something like that after shipping and handling was included.
It burns CD's at a high speed and DVD's at the 4X speed.

I have a choice to make and need TS help to make it. It is between an HP cd writer series 9600 and
an I/O Magic cdrw446.
Checked both with their makers and both do NOT list Mac in their requirements.
Should I stay away from both units?
And keep looking?

I don't think those would be good ones at all.
The Lite-On I linked to is what I recommend.
I just checked that link. They have a:

If you want to save some over the new one listed for $40.99
This and the Firewire case I linked to will work with your machine very well.

Obviously you don't have SCSI on an eMac. And that hp model is very slow compared to the latest burners.
The I-O brand seems to be for PC only.
Kelly's refurb Lite-ON would be a good choice. I have a Lite-On burner which works fine with my Mac.
Here's an even cheaper enclosure into which you could put the burner. It's USB 2.0 which you may not be able to use at the fast speed but just below this one there is a firewire one for $48.

Yes, it's Lou!I checked out the unit Lite On for $39 from NewEgg.com.
Spoke to a salesperson who checked my inquiry about this unit working on a Mac.
She was very positive that it has an EIDE drive and my Mac does not have that drive. Have 3(USB1) 2(firewire).
I know that some units claim to work only on Windos but by using Toast they will work on Macs USB1.
Wonder if that is true in this case.
Could not find the refurbished unit, what URL should I go to in order to find it.

EIDE is what macs use Internally. The ones that don't use SCSI anyway.

You could put this Burner in most Towers.
Your emac has something different. I haven't found a replacement for that.
This Burner will go inside the External Firewire Case.

It is not too difficult to assemble the parts if you have a minimum of skills with a screwdriver and can recognize cables and plugs.
If you want a unit all put together you will have to spend more money, like closer to $100 or more. But if you can go that high let us know, there are other choices.

Kelly-Krissel;I think that the issue is going to be finalalized. In June of 02, I purchased a cdrw on Ebay. It was an HP cdrw series 9600 SCSI interface and worked well with my old 6400 using Toast 5.
By taking a small chance of an Email to the seller, explaining the problem of using Emac now, I received a prompt reply offering to exchange the HP for a new I/O Magic 4x6x4. USB
Checked with I/O Magic by phone, was assured that it would work on the Emac USB using Toast and they would support the cdrw unit but not the Mac.
So, today I have to pack the HP unit and send it back to the seller.
If anyone would like this seller's name, contact me.

There are no Drivers etc. listed for macs.

If it turns out well great. But be prepared for the worst.
If you'd be happy with 4x burn speed I'm sure we can find something pretty cheap if needed.

He has Pacific Digital CDRW 16x10x40 USB, new, offered in exchange for the unit purchased over a year ago.
He guarantees it will work on my Emac but a little slower because it is a USB2 and the Emac has USB1 ports.
Would like to hear comments about this exchange.

Installed and operated excellently. Copied other CDs perfectly. Copied 6 Itunes purchased from Apple.
It has backward capabilities for USB1 which is the ports on the Emac.
I think that I have made a good deal.
