However, I see that happening after heard B. Gates on an interview talking about the gaming industry and not a mention of Windos at all.
Then PC users wanted the iPod for them and their PC Toaster boxes. Apple did cater to the PC users and has made a profit as well.
Now there is iTunes coming out in October 2003 for the PC users as well,
Quicktime is available for the PC users to, on my new Sony Vaio Quicktime is already installed (NICE).
I don't know if any one sees what I see coming in the years ahead.
Not only will Apple be only Hardward devolopers, but I can as well see them coming out with OS X for the PC users as well.
Maybe I am just wishing for too much, but little by little the PC user community has had a ripe taste of Apples touch when it comes to catering to the mass outcries coming from the "what about me" PC users.
I am PROUD to own a Mac and happy to own a PC too, and I see IBM and Apple going a long, long way with the new G5 processors and AMD coming into the picture down the road, as well as many other companies wanting to jump on the "Wagon of Success".
Will IBM be coming out with a P5 or just the G5 processor for the PC market?
I would love to be a fly on the wall to see where Apple and IBM is going as well as Apple's Software.
If anyone has any news about Apple and PC hardware as well as OS's for PC users that will be like MAC OS X, I'd love to know.
If there is a Virtual PC for Mac, why not Virtual OS X from Mac for PC...

Apple has indeed develeped a MacOS X for x86 computers. However, the project was discontinued when Apple found a new strong partner for ther CPUs. OSX x86 was Apple's fall-back plan in case that Apple would be unable to find a replacement for Motorola. But luckily, that search was successful.
So, will there be a MacOS X for x86 machines? - I don't think so. It would kill Apple's hardware and that's something Apple doesn't want to risk. Marklar, the codename for OS X x86, will never be publicly released (just like "Star Trek", Apple's MacOS x86 project).

When I'm talking to people using Apple software on their PCs, they all say "it's nice". But I have - unfortunately - not found a single one who what's to switch because of these apps. Actually, it's the other way around. They're happy to have those apps for their PC, so they DON'T have to switch to a Mac in order to use them.
Apple doesn't release these apps to demonstrate their developing or interface skills, but to earn money. iPod, QuickTime and iTunes (Music Store) are all software that generate quite a lot of money. Apple never released (and never will) iMovie or iPhoto for PC. That's a service for Mac users only. An argument for buying a Mac.

I'm not quite sure where AMD could prossibly join Apple and IBM. AMD's CPUs are completely different from the G3/G4/G5. And equipping Apple hardware with two completely different types of CPUs would just end in total chaos.

Definitely not the P5. That's Intel (although I don't know if the next processor will really be called Pentium).
And the G5 is incompatible with Windows.
Although I don't doubt that IBM could easily release a CPU for the Windows PC market, competing with AMD and Intel is something not even Big Blue dares.

As far as I know, there are quite a lot of Aqua skins for Linux systems. So you could pretend to run MacOS X on a x86 computer, but it's really nothing more.

As long as Apple wants to make money on hardware, there is absolutely no incentive to make an Intel (or AMD, etc.) compatible OS. But I think the real profit margins are in software, so anything is possible.
And if I'm not mistaken, IBM licensed Motorola to make and develop the PowerPC chips (don't they own that trademark?) up until the G4, so IBM is no newcomer to this party. They have also had close working agreements with Apple well before the G5.
I think Apple's only real hope (to gain market share) is government action (shudder!) that will force OS diversification because of the security problems that M$ has desgned into Windows. It's still a monopoly, anyway you look at it, but now it is seen for the security risk that it is.

While I agree that the OS market is the place to really make money, I wonder if we Mac users really want that to happen. What if Apple would become another faceless software giant like Microsoft?

That's true. IBM has all rights for the PowerPC (developement). They formed an alliance with Apple and Motorola back in 1991. IBM and Motorola developed the PowerPC processors, but IBM only used the more powerful chips in their servers and Motorola developed and produced the CPUs for the desktop market (read Apple). But as far as I know Motorola actually has the licence to develope the G5. At least there was a CPU roadmap two or three years ago that showed a Motorola G5 and G6.
And the G3 chips currently used in Apple's iBooks are all IBM.
