Title: RHPConsult is on the mend
Post by: MamaMoose on December 13, 2003, 03:30:21 AM
Spoke to Dick today and he is 12 days post-op (knee replacement) and is in good spirits. He has good and bad days - mostly good. We hope to get together at macWorld Expo and pary hearty. He is of course going thru a set of strenuous exercises, daily to strengthen his leg.

RHP, Glad to hear your surgery went well. My mother-in-law and brother-in-law went through three knee replacements between them, and, through their experience, I can appreciate your demanding exercise regiment. Best to you in your recovery or "break-in".
Thanks to MamaMoose for the progress report.

RHP, I'm glad to hear your on the up side....I've been thinking of you. 12 days post-op certainly is much better than 11, 10, 09, etc.
Heal up quickly as possible.

Good news Dick...
Glad to hear you're on the mend... I too can understand the "strenuous" exercise regime, when I remember what I went through with all the "hardware" in my broken right ankle of '94... but it's as good as new now and worth the work...

When, on your carcass, “they” start to practice, high class carpentry, Your skeleton rebels, you see, and, in no way, bashfully. It first cries out “Why did you do it?”, but now that I am finally through it, Can it be, the brand new knee, will bring, perhaps, some . . . glee . . . and never quit?
The answer seems to be, that one must grin and bear it, Since the knee that nature gave me did, finally, call it quits. So, goals termed “exten-sion” 'n “flex-ion” are now quite high on my agenda, While, whoop-ti-doo, it is quite true, that I am finally on the mend . . . ah!
And all for the good wishes.
PS: It is not true that pain focuses the mind . . . rather it dulls it, so I hope you'll forgive the . . . uhmmm . . missteps in my doggerel.

Your Poetry is fine RHP. Hope you are getting there too.
It evens out somewhat.
Just as many good things go away.
So do the bad things sometimes.
Your pain too will pass.
Get weller soon.

<< It is not true that pain focuses the mind . . . rather it dulls it, so I hope you'll forgive the . . . uhmmm . . missteps in my doggerel. >>
It appears that the mind of a dulled Dick is sharper than that of many another.
I considered warning, but upon reflection I was stayed by Frost's admonition:
. . . Why hurry to tell RHP What soon he would already know?
(apologies to Frost)
Pain is borne by one but soothed by the strength of the many.
There is no more powerful anesthesia than the limitations of human memory.
They are and suffer; that is all they do; A bandage hides the place where each is living, His knowledge of the world restricted to The treatment that the instruments are giving.
And lie apart like epochs from each other - Truth in their sense is how much they can bear; It is not talk like ours, but groans they smother - And are remote as plants; we stand elsewhere.
For who when healthy can become a foot? Even a scratch we can't recall when cured, But are boist'rous in a moment and believe
In the common world of the uninjured, and cannot Imagine isolation. Only happiness is shared, And anger, and the idea of love.

Dick, at least your fingers still work. If you can get to the computer, it's to our benefit. We need you around here.
I sort of know what you're going through with my heel still healing from a fracture in September. And, my 20 year old son had an ACL repair this summer. He was back to normal in less time after major surgery than I am (will be) from landing on my heel from 4 feet up!
It takes longer later in life, but you'll get there!

Dick, I am praying for a complete and sudden healing of your brand new knee...and just think..your surgery is in a place where you can show it to everyone too. Hopefully, you will be doing a happy "HOP" on Christmas Day. God Bless you. June

As to that nifty banner, I think I was that thin . . . once . . . before most of you were born!

Glad to hear that you're on the mend, Dick! Seems December was a good month for surgery - both my Dad (83) and my father-in-law (76) had heart surgery in the past two weeks and both are, thankfully, now home and recuperating well. Modern medicine is truly a marvel - the ability to replace the original bits with artificial bits keeps getting better and better!

Mind you, Paddy, we could get to the stage of being like the road-sweeper character in a UK sitcom. "Had the same broom 25 years.... only had seven new heads and four new handles...."
Keep doing the exercises, Dick, and take care.

Hey Dick, What? No QT movie of the replacement? Even a few jpgs of the new KS (Knee System) will be appreciated.
You are missed.

Why, Harv! I never thought you'd never ask!!
On the day I was discharged from hospital, My Beloved and I were having a conversation with my orthopaedist. In the course of that discussion, she showed him her new CC-size ID supplied by her surgeon, subsequent to her hip replacement last summer. One side actually carries a "minature" of her x-ray showing her titanium implant, should future airport security personnel wonder why she's seting off alarms.
My surgeon, Mac-fancier that he is, then rejoined with the comment, "Maybe we should give you a mini-DVD of your procedure!" I can see it now: Opening Scene . . . the TeeEss Banner, accompanied by a drum roll and brass quartet of memorable proportions.
The world, she surely is achangin'
I have repeatedly marveled at how large a role our many (and successful) internet searches played in preparing ourselves, as patients, for these separate surgeries, including choice of the docs to perform them.
And, again, the TeeEss wishes mean a lot to me. They warm the heart, I assure you.

Boy, am I embarassed! I must have been crunched for time when this topic first went up, and figured that I'd do it the next day. . .And then thought that I had done it! Ah well, you should be quite a ways down the road to recovery, Dick, but I'm hoping there won't be any "congestion" as you approach the destination. So. . .The only thing left, is for you to inform us of when you run your first marathon.

Dear TeeEss friends, this banner’s great, With its clever rhyme, that does conflate! Yet one knee, only, was the main ToDo So how come I've rated, now, Banner Two?
Better than med-i-cation for the pain that’s here, Are my TeeEss visits, in bringing cheer To an aging frame, as it strives to train Laggardly muscles back to the game.
Thank you, artiste, for the smiles and the joy Which again brings home, to this Olde Boy The marvel that Macs so readily attract People with great charm, skill, and . . . knack.
RHP, with a heart full of gratitude

This is probably a good time to bring this delightful thread to an affirmative conclusion . . . with a first-hand orthopaedic report.
First, today - - Day 20 since my surgery - - I have permission to begin (part time) substituting my cane for the walker that has helped me get about the house in the 15 days since I returned home from hospital. While I'm not quite ready to declare "No cane. No pain! or begin dancing on tabletops, I sense that the process is well on its way to a most rewarding conclusion.
Secondly, I thank all of you for your prayers and kind thoughts over the last month or so. Not only here, but in separate messages, I have been reminded of the pleaure(s) of your company, TeeEssers, all.
Lastly, from our family to yours, I send you the best and warmest wishes for this happy season, and beyond. I trust you and your loved ones will have good fortune and good health to enjoy to the fullest.
Cordially
RHP

Was so busy last week preparing for a recent trip, I didn't see the forums till today! (No working Powerbook and a week away from TS )
Anyway, great to hear the news about your recovery and progress! Hope it continues to perfection sooner than later!
I am a little concerned, however. Did you get to keep the old parts?! Sometimes the insurance companies give you a hard time without the old parts, you know. I mean, how do you know they actually did the work as promised? Sure, you feel better now, but that could simply be due to the healing from the surgery! I know I always ask to see the parts after they work on my car! (sometimes I even make little marks on the parts to make sure they were replaced!)
Secondly, how long is the alignment guaranteed on this new work? Did they give you a written warranty? Is is good nation wide? Hope it's not too late to clear up these little details.
Also hope you didn't get 'hit' by the power outages (again?) in SF last night!

Jim:
Re: old parts - - Nope.
Re: warranty - - My Doc, with a smile, while discussing the increasing useful life of the newest artificial knees, noted that once it was 10 years, then 15 years, but that now "You won't have to worry!"
Now, I wonder what he meant by that???? Could it be so, because my next natal anniversary is numbered 75 . . . ? Hmmmmmmmm
