Title: OS X 10.3.2 Released (36.9M)
Post by: pendragon on December 17, 2003, 08:53:17 PM
At VersionTracker and via Software Update:

"The 10.3.2 Update delivers enhanced functionality and improved reliability for Mac OS X v10.3 "Panther" and is recommended for all users.

Key enhancements include:

- improved file sharing and directory services for mixed Mac and PC networks
- more robust printing to PostScript printers
- improved font management
- updated Mail and Address Book applications
- new ATI and NVIDIA graphics drivers
- FileVault, FireWire 800, WebDAV and USB Printing improvements from Update 10.3.1
- previous standalone security updates

For detailed information on this Update, please visit this website: http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n25652

Important Note:
Apple has identified an issue with external FireWire hard drives using the Oxford 922 bridge chip-set with firmware version 1.02 that can result in the loss of data stored on the disk drive. Even with the improvements available in this update, Apple recommends you update the firmware on your FireWire drive. Please contact your drive manufacturer for more information."

I'll give it a go tomorrow-

Done both my 350 G4 tower and the 12" Powerbook. So far no issues.

Powerbook also got the Battery Update, and I updated ARD too...eh, Harv. wink.gif

"Are we having fun yet?"

After installing 10.3.2, Java Update and QuickTime 4.2, Mail constantly freezes my G4!

This is really annoying!

When I start Mail, it bounces, but then nothing happens. Force quit isn't available either and menu item can't be selected. sad.gif
Other running programs seem to be fine at first glance, but for instance Safari cannot continue load new pages (probably because the system froze and the internet connection, too).

This is the first time in a long long time that a MacOS update made stuff worse on one of my computers!

No issues here Spartacus, I don't use Mail, but I tried it and it works fine...so does Safari (my main browser). Both, 350Mhz G4 and 12" rev A Powerbook.

Might be worth cleaning out some System and Mail caches...unless the update created some problem with your internet connection/ISP compatability...?

Since my router handles all internet connection, I don't think that there's a problem with my ISP.

I read through the documentation of 10.3.2 and it reads "updated Mail and Address Book application". I guess that there is some kind of probleme with the new versions.

I checked Apple's discussion boards and it seems that I'm not alone with my problem. Hopefully, Apple will react swiftly.

I updated my 17" PowerBook yesterday and have not seen any of the ill affects mentioned. My machine is only 3 weeks old so it had not had a lot of time for thinga to get messed up.

Fixing permissions did the trick. The G4 is running nicely again. smile.gif

I would have thought you'd do that (repair permissions) immediately after the update. wink.gif

Ran across this, in case Mail starts acting up...worth remembering.

No. Acutally, I repaired permissions for the first time.  blush-anim-cl.gif

But the problem is not completely fixed.
Mail still crashes when I try to launch it parallely with any other app (my standard first move when the Mac is ready is clicking Mail, Safari and iTunes). I have to wait until the other apps finished loading.
And yet, sometimes Mail still freezes.
So, I guess it really is a problem caused by this new version of Mail.

MacFixIt has a solution for the slow booting of some Macs using 10.3.2.

Haven't tried it myself yet, though.

Spatracus, I did try that and it did work (for me). It shaved about 25 seconds off my start up time. Since doing that however, I have heard that the fix/remedy somehow impairs future SW updates. I don't know if this is true and understand little of it. Still, I have subsequently run the restore: sudo rm /usr/sbin/BootCacheControl.

Harv

P.S. Since running the Restore (and verified that it took), I have again timed my start ups. And the improved speed continues.

I remain confused Thinking.gif  wacko.gif
