Short and sweet:

I can't get Mail to work w/ my email provider (I am pursuing this w/ them), but in the meantime and in case this turns out to be a dead-end, I am looking for an acceptible email client that will run 'native' in X (that is, NOT in Classic emulation - I already have OE for that, and it works just fine, but I want to get away from having to run things in Classic regularly).

Aren't there any full-function GUI UNIX mail apps that will run in X?

NB - I spent 45 minutes on the phone w/ AppleCare Level 2 Support yestiddy about the Mail probs and got no further than i did by mice-elf

I've been using Eudora for years, and the OS X version works very well. You can buy it, or use it in sponsored mode which gives a small out of the way ad.

Mozilla Mail (integrated the browser)

I use it to monitor an old email account that gets tons of spam. It should be compatible with just about any server and... it's absolutely FREE!

...works good too.

If OS X Mail didn't work so well, it would be my next choice.

If OsX mail worked with my msn dsl I would still be using it. As is I use yahoo mail sad.gif

I switched to Mailsmith by Barebones over a year ago. Same company that makes BBEdit.

Why would I want to pay a $100 bucks for an email client? Yeah, I know that's expensive, but if you hate HTML email as much as I do, then it's worth it.

Other cool features include a POP Monitor for checking mail while still on your ISP's server...and deleting it before ever downloading any of it. SpamSiev, an application similar to Apple Mail's spam database. Direct reporting to SpamCop...if you're into it. wink.gif

Very advanced filtering capability, integration with Apple's AddressBook, etc.....

Another vote for Eudora.  I am a long-time user, it has features other programs don't and  it costs nothing in the sponsored mode. Before I registered my copy I found the ads to be remarkably insignificant and not at all distracting while using my iBook. Intelligent use of the powerful filters greatly simplifies handling e-mail.  And the way Eudora handles messages prevents corruption of all e-mail files should there be a problem with a file.

No other program I previewed did as much as Eudora.

What email service are you using? If they don't support pop or iMap then most of the other clients will not work. Maybe posting your mail service may get some answers. There is a really good web site that has a wealth of information about email.

Eudora6.0.2 is far and away the best - at least for those, who like myself, take their email seriously.  The Power User has a Rich Source of customizations. The GUI is not pretty - but the functionality is matchless.

FYI - the prob I was having getting Mail to work turned out to be some unknown corruption deep in the bowels of the OS that was magically cured by a simple, quick procedure known to the cognoscenti as an Archive and Install which is rather like an old-fashioned Clean Install With A Twist.

So, one Complete Install of Jaguar and 10.2.8 Combo Updater later, Mail began working like a charm!

ALL of my cosmetic and convenience personalizations WERE preserved, and a handful o' applications required reinstallation to regain full functionality, but for my First One, it went quite smoothly and was fairly 'painless' on the whole.

NB: while it was not complicated, it was not in fact quick (I was being sarcastic above), and should you be contemplating this procedure on your system, I estimate that the main procedure took about two hours (I did not have the forethought to note when I began and when I concluded) with maybe another hour spread out over the next few days as I discovered things that needed some mo' fixin' and attended to them - and this was on my 'fast' machine, the G4 dual 800.

So I have been using Mail for a week or so, and while it lacks a few conveniences, I am overall fairly comfortable and satisfied with it.

I have finally ordered Panther . . . at Harv's urging/encouragement . . . and am looking forward to an "educational experience" in installing it.
