Most of the time, when he tries to start up his Netscape, he receives a "socket connection not available" error message.
However, every once in awhile, he does succeed in accessing the Internet.
I have run Tech Tool Pro, Norton Utilities, and Disk Warrior on this Mac. Nothing has changed. Should I trash his Netscape Preferences? Should I download Netscape 4.79 for him (I do
not think that his Mac will be able to handle Netscape 7.x)?
Please advise. Thank you!!

My friend's computer is an: Apple (PowerPC) Performa 6400/180
Additional info: I have already reset his cable modem, and I have also disconnected and reconnected his ethernet cable.

Using DHCP server. Then go up to the file menu (left upper of you screen) and select "Configurations" Click on the "Make Active " Tab. Also in "Options " Uncheck Load only when needed :0) Harv made me use my brain this evening.

Are both the "Configurations" and "Options" listed under the "File"

This site is a must visit as soon as your friend gets online, or you can go there for him.
6400 zone
The home page presently has a discussion (scroll way down) on various ethernet cards and problems with some of them. That makes me think he could have a problem with his card or even the ethernet wire itself.
Read the info there and elsewhere on the site about ethernet and the 6400.
As for RAM, your friend is not maxed out.

This page has various experiences with users and OS 9 on the 6400. Keep in mind you will be reading about mostly problems as those who don't have trouble tend not to write in. If he could upgrade to 9 he could run Netscape 7 but he would also need to truly max out RAM for that. Otherwise 8.6 was a good OS.

Those "configurations" and "options" can be found on the menu dropdown when you are in the TCP/IP control panel.

My friend has clicked on the "Make Active" tab; but neither of us can find the "Options" tab/button anywhere. Please advise.
I am going to have him buy 64 MB RAM to upgrade his RAM total
to 136 MB. I think this will allow me to upgrade his OS to 9.2 and his Netscape to 7.x. The RAM numbers for OS 9.2 and Netscape 7.x seem to fit well within his RAM limits. Does this sound risky to you?

Now my friend's Netscape home page is loading - but halfway through its loading it stops and displays the "socket connection not available" message. He then clicks "OK" and the message window disappears. Then the home page (very slowly) finishes loading!

I suspect his ISP is not real friendly to his Setup.

I would not use OS 9.x on that without a Processor Upgrade.
And I would not put a Processor Upgrade in now.
When I did it it made sense. Several years ago.
Now. For the price of an upgrade they could get a Beige G3.

If you clicked on the Make Active then you found the Options cause that's what you click to get there.
You shouldn't run 9.2 on the 6400 but possibly 9.1, however it would be straining things with the present processor as kelly implied.
Have you checked into other browsers like maybe iCab or Explorer? Perhaps a slightly older version would suffice.
