If so, start up Mail, and then go into Mail's Preferences pane and make sure that all of your settings are correct. For Comcast, click on the Accounts tab and then:
Fill in the various fields, with your email address etc, Incoming Mail Server should be "mail.comcast.net", User Name - your Comcast user name, Password - your Comcast password, Outgoing Mail Server should be smtp.comcast.net
Then click on the advanced tab and make sure that the "enable this account" box is checked, along with the "include when automatically checking for new mail" if you have that particular option enabled. You should probably also have "remove copy from server after retrieving message" checked, if Mail is your primary email program. It isn't mine, so I don't have that checked. The rest should be filled in and you shouldn't change it.
That takes care of the Comcast account (if there isn't any account set up, or you want to set up additional Mail accounts, simply put your cursor in the "Accounts" window on the left side of the Accounts pane in the Mail preferences and then click on the "+" sign down at bottom of the pane. You'll get a new account to set up.
As for Hotmail, you can't log in directly to Hotmail using Mail. Mail only works with POP, IMAP, .Mac and Exchange (if configured as an IMAP server).
Make sure that there is no firewall blocking your email traffic. In the system preferences, make sure that the Firewall is turned off. You'll find it under "Sharing".
You can get Hotmail email using Mail by following these directions:

When first starting up Mail (in Panther) I couldnt receive mail as well (well everything new went together, DSL, OS....pff!) so after some tries I contacted my provider and they pointed me towards the prefs of Mail/Accounts. The ports should be 110 for incoming mail and 25 for outgoing... The 'incoming port' can be found in accounts/smtp/serveroptions (well mine is Dutch so I'm guessing for the translation!). The 'outgoing port' is found under prefs/accounts/advanced....
After setting them right everything worked nice (i take it pop & smtp are correct?) Hotmail goes through Safari (well, the default browser...) and I work with the firewall and no hassles, the firewall in Panther takes care of nessecary available ports for internet, in- and outgoing mail and userspecified 'free ports'...

Since I had never had to set the ports, I figured they were set by default and didn't mention them as a possible source of Ronald's problems. However, until he replies, we won't know.

Nice forum! (atmosphere-like) Bernie 'sent' me, told me I could like it here and it was a better deal than bying 'mac 4 dummy' books as I intended! Pointing towards 'ports' must seem Veteran but I'm really a newbie (no 'zapping prams' for me
(yet?). Bernie helped me with a copy&paste problem I couldn't figure.... So, yes, normally ports manage themselves (when not using a firewall, and then some still....) I misconfigured my accounts so I couldn't receive mail as well.... I had to know what was going on so I stumbled into that knowledge.. Now I'm fiddling with IP adresses for Limewire because it looks like I cannot share my music with other Limewire users... I have a NAT-based DSL connection and that seems to give some hassle...Well, I will post a question for that later I guess!

Again, Help, I figured that a tour around Mail's 'config-assist' (for MacOSX) could be useful and here it is, the shown link comes from my provider which has a useful helpdesk (I think it is intended for DSL users...) but since it's Dutch, don't bother...
But the examples in the 'Config-tour' are English! So here Goes:

Hi Stef,
While the people in this group have been an invaluable resource and great friends to me from the beginnings of this forum (and even earlier, at that other place), I also can not recommend Macs for Dummies highly enough. The author, David Pogue, is one of the sharpest knives in the drawer regarding mac problems and how to solve them, and he has an entertaining, easy to read style. I recommend getting a copy of Macs for Dummies or his Missing Manual for whatever OS you are using, or some similar book such as The Macintosh Bible if you find another one you prefer. This is because someday, sooner or later, you may run across a problem preventing you from booting up or getting online and getting help here. When that happens, you'll be glad to have that book in your hands.
