We've upgraded our Internet bandwidth and it was noticeable speedier, but it got even more speedy after we did modify the Router (DLink-804), the speed increased with almost 100K/sec in download speed.
The modification requires some skills in telenetting etc, so this is not a "hack" for everyone. If you do it wrong you can actually mess up your router beyond help.
MTU ( Maximum Transmission Unit ) is the greatest amount of data that can be transferred in one physical frame on the network. If a packet that has a smaller MTU than the packet's frame length is sent, fragmentation will occur. For Ethernet, 1500 is the maximum, and recommended MTU. The unofficial MTU for SLIP servers is 1006.
It's the MTU that has to be "hacked" to up the number from 1006 to 1500 (it's done by telenetting into the Router).
*IF* you're skillful enough it's a great way to increase the download speed through your Router.
More information to try to increase speed etc can be found here:

I haven't gotten a speeding ticket yet on my 10Mbit connection
