Dreambird - One travel correspondent described Calgary as "possibly the most friendly city in the world" although he put Vancouver on an almost equal footing. Out of the ten "best wilderness holidays" chosen by the programme, two were in Canada (the other was Churchill).
Al - Hawaii was up there as well.
And, naturally, the Grand Canyon.

Neil: I saw where you wanted to add Hawaii to the subject line......

Thanks Jennie...

I saw from your link that the fellow attended The Stampede here Highmac... that is one strange annual festival...

Most people are extremely friendly during that time, personally I'm happy to live cross town so I can join in only when I want to. I used to live downtown on the 15th floor and the din drove me insane! Yeeee Hawwww!!! all night long!
But it is fun if you're on holiday...
Banff and area is beautiful, although I prefer to go there in the summer... it's great skiing in the winter.
There is in fact, still a lake called Emerald Lake out there... it's a little more secluded than Lake Louise.
I have to disagree with the fellow's idea of "untouched wilderness" though... it's a running dispute around here, cause they keep wanting to develop more and more of the area in and around Banff, it's really putting the squeeze on the wildlife... but if you head off into the back country you can still find semi-untouched areas...
Changes that come with growth I suppose... Calgary had around 475,000 people when I moved here, now we've broken a million...

Hey Highmac, sorry it took so long to reply. wanted to reply yesterday, but my ISP's amplifier blew in my neighborhood. Knocked out internet for approx. 30 hours. That was tough.

That's really cool, glad they think so highly of Hawaii, lots of great diving destinations here.
Thanks for sharing.

Emerald Lake
... which is actually just across the border in British Columbia, but is much quainter than Lake Louise IMHO...
