I'm running Mac OS 9.1. on a G3 w/256 MB & 445 MHZ Prossesor. I need to up grade to OS X in order to run newer apps,.
What OS X should I be looking to that will run on my puter? There's more than one type out there and I'm not sure which one would be best for me.

I would go directly to Mac Os Panther, and not even bother with Jag. I would do the upgrade from Mac 9 os to 9.2 as well.  You can update at Apple's website  http://www.Apple.com  click on support.

Panther is the latest OS for Mac users and Jag is an earlier version of X, go with Panther, but remember to do your updates at Apple's site.

You're also going to want to put as much ram in the machine as you can, well, maybe not want to, but OS X likes ram, and it won't run very well with 256MB, especially on your machine.

Thanks for the feedback. Someone told me I would need more Ram. I was hoping different.

RAM is pretty cheap Buck.

One example for 256 MBs.

You can certainly find it cheaper elsewhere.

Panther will most likely run faster on your machine than the older Jaguar.

But you can get Jaguar for about half the price if money is a big factor.

One little question, which G3? If it doesn't have built-in USB you may have to use a hack to get Panther to work properly.

Buck, OS X Panther will NOT run unmodified on a Mac without built-in USB - which knocks out everything up to and including beige G3's and of course, your 7500. At the moment, there is no finished hack available for Panther. Ryan at OWC has a hack called "XPost Facto" (version 2) which will allow you to run 10.2 (Jaguar) on your 7500 and he is currently hard at work on Version 3, which will allow Panther to run on "legacy" Macs. It is in alpha version now, but still has a couple of serious problems. I'm not sure that I'd install it other than as a curiosity at this point - and certainly not on a machine that was my one-and-only or main workhorse.

Although I have no doubt that Ryan will get XPostFacto there eventually, you may want to start thinking about newer hardware if OS X is a necessity.

I wish to thank you all for posting great information.
This info makes me realize how computer illiterate I am.
But I do understand that upgrading  seems to be something of a hassel. Therefore I think I'll start saving towards the purchase of a puter that comes w/ Mac OS X installed.
