I bought my computer-illiterate husband an older iMac for Christmas. And he likes it! He hates the PCs at work, and won't touch them.
It is a 333, with 96 MB memory(he calls it mammory) and has OS 8.1. He wants to get a Nikon digicam and will probably need to upgrade to 9.2.2(thats what I use on my G4). Can this be done on this machine? I don't have the 9.2.2 disc, as a friend upgraded this one. Maybe all this would work on OS 8.1, but I thought that it would be better to go to 9.

Thank you! I downloaded it and got the shrink wrap error, and I dont have Disc Copy. But I guess that I need OS 9 before I can go forth. I will be watching here for instructions, this will be fun for me to do, as it will be a challenge.
My husband just asked, that if he gets a digital camera, if it will work on the iMac with only 8.1 on it.

You need to buy OS 9 and install, then upgrade to 9.2.1. 9.2.2 is for use with OS X, if you're not going there, stay with 9.2.1.
-
I will have to look into buying 9 then. Maybe all the camera stuff would work on 8.1? I should put my Nikon Coolpix stuff on his computer and see if it does work?

Take a look here:
http://www.nikonusa.com/usa_tech_center/dt...jsp?cat=1&grp=2
Find the camera you have and check if it will use the latest software they offer.
The latest is ver. 5.5 for Macs and is compatible with OS 9.0 and later, even OS X.

It's always best to have an OS CD. They always come in handy.
Here.

It may be cheaper elsewhere.

Thank you all!
I have bookmarked all the info, and will attack it with vigor tomorrow. My husband is very impressed with all the great advice, as this is the first time he has looked at TS.
He first must research and choose the camera, and then we will look at the Mac OS compatibility, I know it will be a Nikon, as we are thrilled with the Coolpix 990 that I bought 2 1/2 years ago.
Must take our dog on her evening walk, signing off, thank you, Jane

Hi Jane,
I have a Coolpix 775 and use it on my Beige G3...running 8.6....and it works fine! Just giving you another option/opinion.
-
My 333 shipped with OS 8.6 and I was very happy with that OS. IT will take less ram to run than OS 9. 9 is probably a bit more stable though.

Are you sure it is a 333? According to Apple that machine's earliest OS was 8.5.

OS and machine compatibility
The 233 came with 8.1 and 8.5.
iMac 233
The digital cameras today mostly use USB for connection or via compact card which can be accessed via a USB reader. You probably should use at least 8.6 for USB peripherals.

Thank you all!
Krissel, you are right, it is a 233. what with horsepower, caliber, and mhz, I get confused sometimes. Mac, Ruger, Ford,,,,,,,,
I looked up the info that you all gave me, and it looks as if the Coolpix 990 will be OK on it. If he does get a newer camera, we will probably use one of my Macs, as they are both 9.2.2.
Maybe next year we will be pushed into a new Mac with OS X, and that will be a whole new educational experience for us!

I agree that OS 8.5/8.6 would be a great OS. If you have it.
They are really hard to find and OS 9.x almost always sells for less.
