Is this  the first non-X desktop (and one of the most cluttered)? Oh, and I really must straighten up the pic one of these days....

Hi All, How do you make a picture of your desktop?
This is fun, there are a lot of neat desktops, and mine could be the messiest of the messiest of all.  But how do you convert it to a .jpg or post it?
Thanks

shift-cmd-3 to take a picture of your desktop. If you're in OS X you'll get a pdf-file so you need to convert it to jpg first before you post it.

Got the simpletext picture, but OS 9.2.2 won't let a .pdf file do its thing.
I have always wondered how to do this with simpletext pictures.  I have never been able to convert them to .jpg.
Graphic Converter gives me an error message with Simpletext too.

jcarter,
Graphic Converter 4.5.4 will open the Desktop pics...you can then use GC to reduce the picture size and resolution and save it web ready.

RobW,

jcarter,

I forgot to mention you need a web site to put your picture on before it can be posted here...at least I think that's the only way.

If you don't have a web site, then you can email the picture to someone who then can put it on their site and send you a  URL to use when you post.

Email it to me and I'll get a URL for you.

Tonight?

The globe in the toolbar is a nifty discovery:
IC Switch lets you "quickly and easily (change) your default emailer, Web browser, and news reader, simply by choosing an item from a menu displayed in all applications."

Nice stuff. Saves messing with the Internet prefs.

Hi Krissel,  The big one is Jordan, he is my brother's wife's father's dog.  He is a pure yellowlab, the little one on the right is Muffin, our dog, she is a pound-hound and is part golden, lab, and something else like Samoyed(our vet thinks).  She is dog #800 on smalldog.com.  They are both waterdogs, is hard to keep them out of the ocean. They're lots of fun.

Thanks, Jane. I missed your kind comment earlier.
I like the way you've even "themed" your icons to your dogs! There are some lovely DTs here.
Where d'you all go for them, if they're not your very own pix? I soon got bored with the selection at places like MacDesktops, but have started to pillage people's art galleries. There's a host of such wonderful work out there.
I found that if you start at a place like, say
digital blasphemy (odd name!), and follow through on the user galleries, and then to their friends, you "meet" a lot of very talented people.

Yes, indeed there are some beautiful photos out there.  But I, and my family, have had a lifelong hobby of taking pictures, so have thousands upon thousands of pix to work with.  Scanning in over 60 years of family + travel photos + slides is time consuming, but rewarding. (Glad I retired recently.) Bought a Nikon Coolpix 990 about 3 years ago, and that opened up a whole new world of picture taking.  I just bought Elements of Photoshop 2, and have been learning it. It does amazing stuff!  I can spend hours on one single photo with it!  (Hoping that Adobe comes out with Photoshop Album for Macs soon, I need it.)

Waaay to GO! and, thanks for starting this kind of thread again. It's always interesting.

Looking at one item on HighMac's DT reminds me of another amusing thread of a long time ago. Think I'll start one of those, again.

Stay tuned.

sokukodo , you have a .mac account right???  If so...you should be able to send pics or the url to TS.  Someone else on here has .mac and did it...can't remember who!
Title: What\'s On Your Desktop

I tried this with my .mac picture album page too, I can get the URL for the whole album, but when I click on an individual picture, I get the slide show option, with the javascript.  Same with imageevent.com and Clubphoto.com. It won't work for just one picture.
Pbase.com is my favourite, as you can pick out the URL for an individual picture.  http://www.pbase.com/image/2064890  for example
I am glad you brought this to my attention, as this is an important feature.

Naughty naughty, Bill.... eating by your 'puter, then leaving the left overs around for other creatures...

Snuffy, I love those goats!  Wouldn't mind one myself.  Did you see the 2004 GTO?

2004 Pontiac GTO

I still prefer this one.

jCarter , if you open the slide show at .mac to the picture you want to link, then hold down the mouse button over the image. Drag down to "open image in new window". When the new window opens the picture will be on a page of its own. Copy that link to use here at TS.

Hi Krissel,  I can do this with my Pbase.com albums, but all my Mac.com ones don't show a link, its just a javascript page. So I go back and either use the origional image or put it on pbase and it is a link from pbase.
I will try this with Shutterfly and my others,  thank you for bringing this to my attention.
Just got pictures of new lambs and Border Collies this morning, so I will try it with these.

Yes, the smaller images on the "thumbnail" page do pop open a javascript which is of course the slide show. Once you do click on one of the small pics and the larger version is open within the slide show,  then  hold down the mouse over that image and drag to "open image in new window". You will get a totally new page with a link to copy.

You have to open the slide show first and let the image you want fully load before mousing down.
It does work.

 This picture

is from

this album.

I keep trying with all my other photo album sites, and I never get the direct link for an individual picture except Pbase.com.
Here is what I get when I try my Mac album pages, javascript for the slide shows,
 http://www.pbase.com/image/14385153,

http://photos.imageevent.com/carterfamilya.../Max_Cobra1.jpg
Just learned how to do it with ImageEvent, still can't get it to work with the Mac album,,,,,,,,,,,,, Confusing for me?
Egads, Carter, edit this thing again, image waaaaay too big, but shows Max, my grandson up close, and that I am learning!

Didn't realize you were using Netscape.

Actually it's easier in Netscape.
Just go to the "Copy link location" or "Copy Image Location" in the popup and you have the address on your clipboard ready to paste.

Cute kid!  Just warn us when he goes out on the road.

Hi Krissel,  It works!  Thank you!  This is exactly what I need to do when I continue with my Photoshop classes.  I learn something new and good from you all every day!   I am beginning to feel somewhat more confident about maybe getting another Mac this fall, with OS X.  I know I will have some problems, but I know that I will get the help I will need right here on TS.

Terrific!

Two more bits of advice if you can stand it. If you want to link to the full size picture rather than the thumbnail, click on the picture and wait for it to load within the slide show, then mouse down and copy that link. The same pic you have above full-sized would be

http://homepage.mac.com/janec3/.Pictures/2...20sunset%21.jpg

Notice the "thumnail" and additional numbers are absent from the address you have above.

Second, to avoid the extra wide box that occurs when you have a really long URL do the following:

•  In the Reply box, when you have reached the point in your post for the URL, click the URL box that is below the typing window (scroll down) under the "Instant UBB Code" label

•  Paste the URL in the window that pops open, click OK

•  A second blank window will present with the word "website" in it. Type a word or more to describe the page to which you are linking. Click OK.

You will get the above linked page in this form.
 What a Sunset!
