Title: Intel to release new 1,6 Ghz processors.
Post by: Mrious_be on March 22, 2003, 06:21:00 AM
Finally, our "cold war" talks with pc users about the "processor myth" might end.
On this dutch OsX information site they are talking about the new Intel 1,6 Ghz processors.
I know now much amongs you are talking/reading Flemish/Dutch so i'll give you a fast translation myself
(Makes me feel verrrry smart)

It seems that Intel is saying that this new 1,6 Ghz processor will be 13-15% faster as the 2,4 Ghz processor.
And than they say that, what Apple has been saying for years to the outside world (Processor myth) is finally been "proved" to intel users.
I guess they will have to read twice or three times to believe this now.

Another "victory" for Apple
They also have a little thing about the new "G5?" processor (PowerPC950) but it's not yet worth saying anything about it.
Let's hope they have it ready by the next Apple Expo.

Edit3: Thanks for clearing my problems Jenny

1,6 MHz? Speed of Light, here we come!

I guess you meant GHz, right?

I suppose it's Intels new 64-bit processor. From what I heard 64-bit operate more efficiently at lower MHz speeds. Therefore, it's not surprising that MHz numbers are probably going to be of less importance in future.

If we're lucky, we [the Mac users] might be the first ones (consumers) with a 64-bit computer, as AMD's Hammer is rumored to be released not before autumn 2003.

Hahahaha
Yeah... it should be Ghz... i'll change it after this reply, hehehe

But....

Ok, i just assumed they had the architecture that Apple uses on it's PowerPC's.
So, what exactly is the difference in this 64 bitt architecture and the ones we have now?

I'll better correct my Mhz to Ghz now, hehehe

I fixed your Mhz to Ghz and the end bracket on the /url was a paranthesis instead of a bracket.....so I kinda fixed that too.

Aaah, was just looking for what i did wrong, but i guess sometimes it's better to have someone else fix the problem, as i didn't saw it.

Thanks Jenny

This is the Centrino we've seen ads for on TV.

As far as I know it's not 64 Bit.

It's an integration of components.

"First and foremost, Centrino is not Intel's latest processor, but a series of components that work together. If one piece of the puzzle is missing, the notebook doesn't receive the Centrino stamp of approval. Centrino includes three components.

*   Intel Pentium M processor
The processor boasts 77 million transistors on a 0.13 micron die. Intel claims the processor consumes an average of less than a Watt. Notable features include 1MB of power-managed L2 cache, 400-MHz bus, the next generation of Enhanced Intel SpeedStep, and a slew of other acronyms and technical terms. Processors will debut with clock speeds up to 1.6 GHz.

*   Intel 855 chipset
The chipset can dynamically adjust power for system components that aren't being used. The 855 chipset supports USB 2.0 and 2GB of 200/266-MHz DDR memory. Embedded graphics chipsets will also be available. Lacks FireWire support.

*   Intel Pro Wireless 2100
The final piece of the Centrino puzzle is integrated wireless connectivity by way of a mini-PCI card. Centrino will debut with 802.11b, but future versions will include 802.11a/b combo cards. The Centrino platform has been tested with major 802.11b service providers worldwide for compatibility and efficiency. Does it mean Centrino is better in the wireless world than other non-Intel wireless cards? We're not convinced quite yet."

More.

Only for notebooks at this point. And it seems to work.

And they are trapped in their own MHz propaganda.

Woooow, verrrry technical but interesting explenation.
Thanks Kelly

I'm scared to ask after this explanation, but so what's a 64 bitt processor? and does this mean we have 32 bit processors now?

Yes. We have 32-Bit now.

Read this just this morning.
